United Nations officials are reporting that the Darfur town of Haskanita has been “completely burned down, except for a few buildings.”  The Sudanese army and janjaweed militias are apparently behind the destruction of Haskanita, U.N. sources say.

Los Angeles Times:

The U.N. did not say who set fire to the town but said Sudanese government forces took control of the area last week after suspected Darfur rebels attacked the nearby African Union base a week ago, killing 10 peacekeepers.

United Nations officials said the burning began Wednesday but that observers were unable to obtain firsthand confirmation until Sunday.

“The market area had been looted,” the U.N. statement said. It said most civilians fled after the Sept. 29 attack on the base but that a few returned to search for food and water.

A U.N. official who had just inspected the North Darfur town said Sunday that 15,000 civilians were fleeing the area.

The only way for the U.S. to intervene would be to go through China and get permission. That land is being cleared for the safety and operations of the Chevron Oil Co. China would be very mad at the U.S. if we ran interference.

In the interests of showing respect for the other side Wolf Blitzer of CNN did an interview with the foreign minister of Sudan as if he was talking to a potential Noble Peace Prize Winner.Someone please tell our media that there are not always two sides to a story. Here was chance to get in this guys face and accuse him of complicity in genocide and reccommend lawyers for when he is on trial for crimes against humanity instead Wolf in his bland way treated this mass murderer with respect. If it is so important to “get"these guys for an interview that you cannot go at them what is the point of the interview.I always wonder especially after Rwanda if these were white people being slaughtered would our response be different.Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson you have a mission head to Darfur and actually do something useful. You could act like they are playing old tapes of Don Imus’ radio show.
