Scandal at Oral Roberts U.

Posted on Oct 6, 2007
Oral Roberts University

Like a prayer:  This giant sculpture of praying hands graces the entrance to Oral Roberts University’s Tulsa campus.

Televangelists and scandals seem to go together, and now some members of Oral Roberts’ family may be about to rise a few ranks on the faith-based-and-disgraced list that includes Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart.  This time, Roberts’ son, Richard, and Richard’s wife are apparently at the heart of the hullabaloo, and the wife’s penchant for texting underage fellows in the wee hours isn’t even the half of it.

AP via My Way News:

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

At a chapel service this week on the 5,300-student campus known for its 60-foot-tall bronze sculpture of praying hands, Roberts said God told him: “We live in a litigious society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit ... is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

I dunno, I’ve seen pictures of Dick Roberts’ wife, and as a former underaged male myself, I wouldn’t hit that.  I mean, I know young guys what with the hormones and everything, but you gotta be kidding me.

I am a current ORU student and I must say that this scandal is not surprising. I find ORU to be a very legitimate school with good professors. However, I do believe the theology to be very misguided and for that reason I am looking into finishing my degree elsewhere. I have gone to ORU for a while because it is convenient with good professors, but if I were a German living in the Nazi era I wouldn’t work for Adolf Hitler just because it were convenient. I got out of the Army because I didn’t agree with working for George W. Bush, and I will most likely leave ORU because I don’t believe in paying into the pockets of a scamming televangelist either. Vaya con Dios!

So the famous emblem is really of “Preying Hands” isn’t it? The hands in PREY for all the money you can dump into the organization.
They stand for greed, lust, and all the things that the fake church tries to tell you is the work of the devil.
There would be no devil if not for the churches brainwashing the masses.

farmertx: I never said, “I am a just and forgiving god.” Sheesh. What I said about blowjobs was, “God I hope everyone gets one!”

To tell you the truth, I’ve always thought Peter was a tool. Everyone gets blowjobs in heaven. But the payback is a bitch, because women get their turns too, so keep that in mind, guys!

Outraged: Don’t be such a kissass. I hate those. But glad to hear you’re happy with the situation. Oh, and just so you know, stop doing that thing in the shower you do all the time. It’s highly amusing to the rest of us, but doing it that often will snap a blood vessel in your head. Nice form though…

Good and bad news folks; the good news is there will be no national holiday for us to celebrate. The bad news is that Senator Larry Craig will be honored in the Idaho Hall of Fame this week. So far there is no “honorarium” proposed for Oral Roberts. Stay tuned! I believe as far as the Hall of Fame goes, Governor McGreevy and Clinton didn’t even receive honorable mention.

Back when Oral made his sermon about God holding him hostage for 80 million, Ch8 in Dallas cancelled his show with no second thoughts.
It is difficult to understand how grown people, some with a good education, can be conned by these types of “preacher’s”.
Reminded of the story of St Peter announcing to God that the folks on Earth were breaking a lot of commandments and other religious rules. One of the most violated rules concerned sex, specifically oral sex.
St Peter wanted these folks punished. But God said, no, I am a just and forgiving God. We must send something to the ones following My teachings.
It was decided that St Peter would have a suitable message engraved on a plaque and sent to the followers’.
Know what it said?
Oh, you didn’t get one either? Bummer.
But don’t feel too bad, I ain’t found no one else that did get one.

Typical of televangelists. Who’s surprised?

As self-righteous as the Roberts’ may seem, you really need to check out the self-styled whistle-blowers in this event, the Brookers. These two have a long and infamous history of making a name for themselves through litigation and “crusades” against not only the Christian establishment, but law enforcement and politics as well. What a pair!

One of my favorite moments on Saturday Night Live ever was during the time Old Man Oral himself said he needed to raise $10,000,000 to start some new school (Law?) or God was “going to call him home”.

I think the great Phil Hartman was playing Oral when the doors to his office swept open in a cloud and Charlton Heston walked in and intoned, “Do You Have The Money?” I literally hit the floor laughing.

The problem with the priests of any religion is that most of them really do beleive. Even some of the most successful ones are basically honest. (I would hold up Billy Graham as an example. Far from perfect, but I never doubted his sincerinty.)

But every good natural born con man knows a racket when he sees one and there ain’t one better than religion.

Now you know why Karl Rove chose this group to push his real agenda, a one party dictatorship. With so many sheep already gathered, it wasn’t very hard.  I’ll bet this crew makes the Catholic Church look like saints (LOL).  Watch how the sheep defend the actions of the sheep hearders, that’s the part I just can’t understand.  Maybe it’s in the holy water….

Not to worry. Dr. Hagee will take charge. “Dr.”? yes from .. Oral Roberts. Don’t you have one? Religion is the only business where fraud is both respectable and highly profitable. Send money, and god bless you a thousand times over.

A person that is a good and sane person could not exploit the ocean of ignorance that exists out there. He would become a loony-tune in a trice. I’m always amused when I see a murder and rapist that killed one hundred women and buried them in the woods being question by a reporter. The reporter will ask the psycho don’t you feel remorse for what you did? The psycho will look at the reporter quizzically and you can tell what he is thinking. Compunction, why should I have remorse for my victims? They have built a steel wall around their conscience and feel no pain. The trick by the religious devils, politicians, and capitalists is to exploit the dim bulb people in this world. Screw the intelligent, mature, and decent people they don’t matter. These corrupt people than achieve absolute wealth, and absolute power. There is a saying that wealth and power corrupt and absolute wealth and absolute power corrupt absolutely. The result is that these evils rule the world. There are 2 types of religious devils. One type still has the circus tent smell about them and openly uses wealth given to them for personal use. The other types lost their circus smell centuries ago and are far more sophisticated in hiding the wealth they use for personal aggrandizement. If you analyze the commercials on TV you can see they are oriented for a 6 year old mind. They orient the commercials at this level because it is so successful. There were companies that oriented their commercials for a twenty-one year old and over mind (Tucker-Packard-Desoto-Old Golds-Rambler-Ambassador-Crosly-Dumont-etc-etc). Have you ever heard of them? The reason you haven’t heard those names is because they made the mistake of appealing to a twenty-one and over mind. All of those that used 6 year old commercials extensively have become multinationals. If there was a big guy in the sky he would not allow an evil to sully his house. The human devil would be killed in the fetus. Why are religious devils shielded by governments? They are vital like the army, nation guards, and police to help control the population and pacify them. Yes, we are making your life a hell on earth, but after you rot in the ground you will go up to heaven with your seventy virgins and between breaks you will listen to Pat Boone and Frank Sinatra sing Amazing Grace for eternity.

When will this cult get wise to the new and improved way of channeling god’s words like the Osteen bunch have?  According to them it’s god’s will that they be wealthy and live like kings…oh, and god wants that for all his children as well.  The Roberts’ bunch are just living that dream.  Got to hand it to the modern “snake oil salesmen”, they’ve managed to gather a huge, sheepish following.

Dear Outraged:

1. Yes, you can have experienced partners. Our women here are well-trained and quite imaginative. Their mentors were all chosen from the pool of the “unknowingly corrupted” who served televangelists back in the real world. Oh, bring money. Everything costs extra.

2. Yes, you can smoke your brains out. Cigarettes, cigars, pot. Hell, if you can roll up leaves and sticks, set em on fire and smoke em, you’re welcome to it! We’ll leave the smoking lamp lit for you. Frankly, it pisses the Mormons off, but they just sit in a corner anyway and grease their bike chains, so what the hell. All non-smokers go to hell where smoking isn’t allowed. But no one notices what with the pokers and the lakes of fire you mentioned and all. Frankly, I’m quite curious to see how self-involved people who garner some sort of sick sexual thrill from forcing their beliefs on other people like the other end of the stick.

Dear Rae:
Don’t feel sorry for the sods. They were stupid. I hate the stupid. The ignorant are hunky dory, really, but after ALL the church scandals over the past ... what, 8,000 years?... they get what they deserve. I mean really, doesn’t ANYONE remember Jim & Tammy Fae Bakker? Hell people, it wasn’t THAT long ago! I hate churches (see: The Bible. Especially the part about you and god. That’s it. No one else allowed to be involved. I would tell you exactly where to look, but I’m pretty sure by now that it would just be taken out of context, so read through the context.)

P.S. I ADORE atheists! The never ask for anything, they never expect anything, they never whine and nag me all the time about other people not behaving properly, and most of all, THEY NEVER BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING! I’ve never seen one of them hit someone with a stick and say, “God told me to, therefore, I’m doing God’s work. Jolly lot. Love ‘em to death!

Hey, maybe this is the start of Armaggedon.  Doesn’t it go something like all the false religions will be exposed and then the end will come.  Thank God you still have yours…..whoops…there it goes.  Damn looks like the Atheists are going to be the only ones to make it through the lake of fire, or was that the second death….no wait…the rapture, yeah..that’s it.  Wait, now am I gonna live in Heaven or on earth, I mean if we all go to heaven who’s gonna be down here…I mean are we just going to kind of freak out the animals for fun or what?  If I’m in Heaven and it really is a paradise or is that the garden of Eden, well…anyway..if I really want can I just skip the virgins and have well experienced partners instead, it sounds like sooo much more fun.  Well and if I have good partners ...well… see.. I was wondering…do you think they have cigarettes in heaven…..?

Pat Hagee to the rescue… Good piece on him on Bill Moyers Journal last night.  All of these zealots are creepy and shady.  They prey, not pray, on individuals who have no self confidence and create illusions, and do not allow people to think for themselves.
Funny how Pat Hagee stands up for Israel right up until the rapture, and then damns them Jews to hell.  “Hey we wanna use you right now, so we can go to fairy land, by the way you will die helping me.”  The sad irony is he has an ARMY of Jewish Americans standing in line to tell him how great he is..
See you in church tomorrow:)

Nothing new here.  From the Reverand Ike to Oral Roberts to Pat Robertson, these evangelical preachers are simply scam artists who use religion to acquire enormous wealth.  The scary thing is that these pseudo-religious institutions have turned out individuals who are then highly placed within the government, like Monica Goodling.

If God knew about lawyers he would have made the ocean deeper. You know what you have when you have two lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start!

My God is non-interventionist. That’s the only way I can explain the fact that so many good people die early and so many scum seem to hang on forever.

I feel so sorry for all those who’ve fallen prey to the schemes and scams perpetrated by these phoney Christian charlatans.

I sure hope each and every victim finds a way to regain sanity and individuality but I fear most have had their brains too badly damaged to ever recover fully. They’ve been LIED TO and ABUSED and MADE FOOLS OF by those they trusted.
