The freshly sworn-in chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, started his first day on the job with this revelation: “The fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan will one day end.” That’s a relief, coming from the newest member of Team Bush, but don’t get too excited, there’s more: “We must be ready for who and what comes after.” Oh dear.

BBC:

The new top military adviser to US President George W Bush has said he wants to prepare the military for challenges beyond Iraq and Afghanistan.

At his swearing-in ceremony as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen said he wants to revitalise the armed forces.

Meanwhile, the FBI is to investigate US security firm Blackwater over the deaths of 11 Iraqis last month.

By usage, the Presidential Medal of Freedom has been reduced to a token for allowing Shrub to use someone.
There are a few Staff Officers that will not forget that Duty Honor Country has a real meaning. Petraeus was 5th or 6th General to be offered Iraq. The others remembered and did the right thing.
Sadly, there are more that will forget that, if there is a chance for a fat consultant contract upon retirement.
Shrub is genetically unable to appoint anyone who is truly independent. They might tell him the truth and that has to be avoided at all costs.

“... wants to revitalize the armed forces…” for “challenges beyond Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Well, isn’t that just ducky. Haven’t learned a thing.

How many more decades of morons does the American administration have lined up with which to entertain the world’s aggressive, greedy military-industrialist capitalists?

First the rot within then the conquering from without. The first part seems complete.

If you think George Bush nominated this guy because he is an independent thinker and will stand up to the President you are going to be surprised. How many lackeys are there in the Pentagon who are willing to sacrifice their men to please our moron in chief. After the Vietnam disaster which most of these guys were schooled in you would think they would have read “Dereliction of Duty “and been determined that should never happen again. But alas you can still find a homophobe and a pletheura of ass kissers who care more about their careers then the men and women they have been put in charge of.I wonder if a true American hero like Gen Baptiste will get the Medal Of Freedom.
