The British prime minister has warned that the number of dead in Burma is probably “far greater than is being reported so far.” The world community has widely condemned the Burmese government’s violent response to the thousands of protesters who’ve been flooding the streets of Yangon.

BBC:

“I am afraid that we believe the loss of life in Burma is far greater than is being reported so far,” Mr Brown said.

He said he hoped the combined international pressure from the US, China, the EU and UN would “begin to make the regime see this cannot continue”.

Both the British and Australian ambassadors in Burma said they believed the number of dead “could be many multiples” of the number given by state media.

The shame of this is the people who really interested in democracy will probably die for nothing because the two countries that border Burma have deals with this government for oil and gas.More fatalities in the petro wars.

Hmm...will Mr. Brown say the same thing regarding the ‘real death toll’ of civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan or Palestine ?....somehow...I doubt it…

It’s not necessarily an outside military intervention that could create significant effect.

Withdrawing all international forms of participation, support and a threatened boycott of the upcoming Olympics might entice China, a main player of influence, to actively and immediately intercede.
