Thanks for the clarification on our State’s relationship with the Vatican. That’s the real reason, but politics plays heavy there.

And by now, any US official with ANY measure of brain activity, should know that the Pope, (this one as well as John Paul) have consistently spoken out against the barbaric imperial intentions of this administration. I mean, they’ve made no secret of it at all!!

So, this is just another of the same ignorant arrogance with which this team operates. Nevermind that the Vatican has been calling bush on his lack of human decency for over a decade. (John Paul made a direct plea to him if you remember, on behalf of Karla Faye Tucker.) George put her down anyway, like he did with at least a dozen others when he was the Shrub of Texas).

So, it’s like they just do whatever the hell they want, burn up a whole nation, while the rest of the world pleads with them to stop, (including the Vatican), and then they come along and expect to have tea when they’re in town,(and need a favor).

But the reason the Vatican gets Diplomatic Status is that it is a City-State, sovereign from Italy proper.
Don’t make it right, but that’s the reason no other Church has Diplomatic Status.

I’m pretty much with you on this question of why we should be having relations with ANY Church, or ANY brand. But...the reality is that it’s an important part of the real politik. Tradition I suppose.

Now I don’t like this Pope, but I’m tickled to pieces that he blew Condi off. Oh yes!!! That does make my day.
