Bush’s Holy War

Bush praying

President Bush and guests join hands at the White House to commemorate the National Day of Prayer on May 5, 2005.

In this thought-provoking opinion piece from the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper, writer Correlli Barnett points out how, in waging his own brand of holy war, Bush (and, by extension, former British PM Tony Blair) failed to comprehend crucial lessons about war that historical examples have repeatedly borne out.

Daily Mail:

But I have long thought that Bin Laden was also motivated by a specific strategic purpose in launching 9/11—a wish to trap the United States into an ideological struggle with the Islamic world. He certainly succeeded in this—but only because Bush and his neo-con cronies have been all too willing to accept the challenge.

Why? Because just as much as Bin Laden and his fellow jihadists, they, too, see world affairs in simple terms of ideological conviction.

Remember, Bush and his vicepresident Dick Cheney are fundamentalist Christians, while Bush’s own political base lies in his fellow fundamentalists of the American ‘Bible belt’. And tragically for Britain, Tony Blair passionately shared Bush’s belief that world policy must be inspired by religious faith.

Ignorance, superstition, and arrogance produce religion and sustain it. Religious fanatics will cause our downfall, as they look foward to Armageddon .

The war against secular Saddam was an oil war (that is, imperialist war), not a religious war.

Anybody who thinks the Iraq war, or the coming war on Iran, has anything to do with Bush’s religious beliefs is very nieve. The wars we’re currently engaged in, and preparing to engage in, are strictly REPUBLICAN wars. The entire Bush administration is a REPUBLICAN wet-dream, or at the very least their dreams cum true. The REPUBLICAN fat cats behind the scenes are reaping fabulous fortunes off the wars and that’s exactly what the REPUBLICANS are all about. War=profits, and that’s what the US wars are all about, not religion.

War in the name of religious principles makes about as much sense as war in the name of humanitarian intervention.

Imperialism cloaked as relgion or humanitarian concerns works pretty well though.

Is Cheney an evangelical Christian?

Free us from the bondage of Israel - please, this isn’t a relationship, its a bribe all very carefully dressed up like a ‘special’ friendship?

Friends don’t need to bribe and extort Congress.

Friends don’t need to overtly and covertly Lie w/the unbrideled cooperation of the manipulated Media machine.

Look at the composite Joe Lieberman and see clever deception 21 century style. Very lovely.

Whether it be because of cynical calculations of short-term political gain, or true faith Bush has been easy to manipulate by Al Qaeda. Im sure Bin Laden was pleasantly surprised by Bushes use of the word Crusade only a few days after 9-11. Anyone with any knowledge of the Middle East knows that the Crusades are still a bitter memory there. So using that term was sure to cause a great recruiting bonanza for OBL.

As RAE so eloquently states: Once you stray from decision making based on logic, reason, evidence, past experience and fair play, ESPECIALLY when you’re charged with the responsibility to make equitable and justifiable decisions that affect the lives of others, you are derelict in your duty and should be removed from office and subjected to due process of law.

Bush and Cheney fundamentalist Christians??? That was all an invention of Karl Rove’s to appeal to that segment of the populace.
Those guys are about as Christian as my toaster.

farmertx… no need for redundancy:

“...religious right proved how gullible they were…”

The people of any nation that allow their government to operate on a philosophy based on the FAITH that a supernatural “being’s” instructions will guide it equitably and reliably, GET EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVE - erratic, biased, freedom-free, extremely inefficient and expensive, CHAOS.

Once you stray from decision making based on logic, reason, evidence, past experience and fair play, ESPECIALLY when you’re charged with the responsibility to make equitable and justifiable decisions that affect the lives of others, you a derelict in your duty and should be removed from office and subjected to due process of law.

George W. Bush is a disaster as a leader. He knows it and so does every other thinking human. If he had any compassion whatever for his fellow Americans, he would resign. But he doesn’t. All he has is his irrational FAITH and an ego so large it’s amazing he can stuff it all into Texas!

Personally, I would love to see records of Shrubs’ Church attendance for services other than holidays and weddings or funerals. I have an idea that those records met the same fate as his ‘military’ records.
Shrub did as Pigpen directed him in appealing to the religious right.
The religious right proved how gullible they were by accepting this at face value twice. Despite proof after the first time that he wasn’t that interested in their causes.
No political candidate nor any office holder should be allowed to do more than say God Bless America at the conclusion of a speech.
You notice that Pigpen stopped the Shrub from saying that he consulted God, knowing that most folks understand those who get instructions from God wind up as defendants in Murder cases.
I don’t mean to disparage any who have a strong belief in God or any Higher Power.
But those who have such beliefs and are sincere about those beliefs don’t lend themselves to the underhanded smear tactics that exemplify this administration.
Just as Shrub claimed that Billy Graham ‘saved’ him and Dr Graham had no recollection of that, Shrub will use whatever lie suits his immediate purpose.
That is not the action of a true Christian.

Bush claims his guidance from a higher father, so therefore I am not to blame when things go wrong excuse is to lame. Bush suffers from what is called in legal terms a depraived heart or depraived indifference. In other words he doesn’t really give a dam what happens to anyone else, just as long as he gets what he wants. People have used the bible to justify the wrong things they do almost as long as the bible has been around. It still doesn’t make it right. George should have listened to the framers and honored the seperation of state and church parts instead of trying to combine them, or rather let religion rule over everything and everyone regardless of the laws of the land. When anyone gets to religious and starts letting it take over all aspects of a persons life to the point of forcing others to bow down to it against their beliefs, then everyone better watch out.America may very well end up with religious extremists dictating every minute of your life as past history has shown and it is still alive and well today.

One more thing. I think if you check the history books you’ll notice the following phenomena.

The successful “God” always wins the war. It could be that Allah may in fact be the validated “God” in the question of success in Iraq.

Of course the loser always has to go home and try to understand what he did wrong for his “God” to have abandoned him so!

I have said for some time now that bu$h has been the greatest recruiting tool Bin Laden could have ever prayed for.

It seems these two Religeous fanatics were made for each other.

However, I don’t give bu$h even this much credit. I think he is like so many Protestant hypocrites. He just uses his religion to further his own interests. In this case I think his reason for attacking Iraq was horribly simple. While there were (and still are) those around him like Cheney who had much more sinister personal goals regarding the illegal attack on Iraq, bu$h simply wanted to show his daddy up and show his friends that even though he craw-fished (back-pedaled) during Vietnam he is really John Wayne. And like John Wayne, he probably won’t ever get any blood on himself.

Dr Morgan Reynolds, the former Chief Economist of the US Dept of Labor, is suing private contractors alleging they defrauded the government by supplying bogus analyses for the official 9/11 NIST Report of an aluminum airplane with a plastic nosecone gliding into a steel/concrete building.

Dr Reynolds is represented by attorney Jerry Leaphart, and is demanding a Trial By Jury.

The US District Court, Southern New York, recently unsealed the case and Mr Leaphart is now notifying the Defendants.

See Dr Reynolds site for info & the Court Document PDF:

Dr Judy Wood, a former Professor of Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University, recently filed an appeal with the government for their refusal to retract their report on the World Trade Center destruction. Dr Wood (and Dr Reynolds) have compiled much evidence demonstrating that the WTC was destroyed with directed energy weapons. She has been in contact with government officials and is getting results. See Dr Wood’s site for evidence of directed energy weapons and PDFs of official Request for Corrections filed with the government:

I find it difficult to believe that even Bush could deceive himself so much that he believes his fraudulent messianic dribble. But maybe I give him too much credit. But whether he believes his dribble or not he has done more damage than anyone else in recent times.

There are many who exploit for varying reasons, but wide-spread damage to human faith has been done by one—George W. Bush —because his impact and influence is global. His crass use of religion has probably done more to spread cynicism and doubt among myriads of believers than anyone I can think of.
The heart of darkness, or rather the heart of George W. Bush resides in the reaches of chicanery and deception. Can anything be lower than furthering your agenda by manipulating the vulnerable in faith and trust.
James Carroll in the Boston Globe a few years back discussed Bush 2004 election tactics. Carroll said, “Bush salts his public statements with religious references as a way of preempting challenge….If Jesus is his political philosopher, or if the heavenly father is his adviser on Iraq, then Bush has to explain neither his despotic politics nor his disastrous Iraq policy to anyone.”
In response to a reporter, we might remember that Bush claimed guidance from a Father higher than his own earthly father. Knowing the calculative nature of Karl Rove, this was probably designed to suggest a messianic quality for Bush.
Bush has made much of his faith-based initiatives, whether exclusionary social policy or war. Carroll cites this as another sham.
These social projects disguise the Bush agenda of dismantling government structures that provide basic human needs. His basis of exclusion, for example, banning the gay life, is the Bible. The fight against terrorism is couched in religious terms: Crusades, us vs. them, axis of evil and so on.
Carroll observed that Bush uses religion to justify his penchant for violence. Anything he targets as the enemy is evil, whether Al Qaeda or Democrats. His stubborn “stay-the-course” mentality ignores the chaos, the suffering, the deadly toll of lives, and the utter dismantling of an Iraqi society. In effect, play-acting an Old Testament patriarch, he is destroying Iraq to save it.
Thus Bush is twisting the cross of Christianity to suit his own needs. It has been done before: as an icon with the swastika, in war with the Crusades, to save orthodoxy with the Inquisition.
