The Iraqi View: ‘Surge’ Has Failed

The definition of “progress” in Iraq clearly depends upon whom you ask—while the Petraeuses and Crockers of the world are claiming that the U.S. troop “surge” is (slowly) showing signs of success, a BBC/ABC/NHK poll of 2,000 Iraqis suggests quite a different story.

BBC:

About 70% of Iraqis believe security has deteriorated in the area covered by the US military “surge” of the past six months, an opinion poll suggests.
The survey for the BBC, ABC News and NHK of more than 2,000 people across Iraq also suggests that nearly 60% see attacks on US-led forces as justified.

This rises to 93% among Sunni Muslims compared with 50% for Shia.

I watched as much as I could stomach of the testimonies and questions. I guess I don’t have to say that NONE of this was mentioned, because nothing that the Iraqis think, say, do, or feel is EVER mentioned.

I was pleased to discover that Mr. Crocker speaks beautiful Arabic. That’s a help.

I was also pleased to note that Senator Obama was able to, (in his alloted 7 minutes) enter an objection to the “timing” of the testimony, (Sept 10,11, or 12th) making it clear (for the record)that it was inappropriate because it attempted to continue the perception that our presence in Iraq was somehow related to the attacks of 9-11-2001, and there simply is NO CONNECTION!! (aside from the one that was fabricated in the neocons theme room, and have been using to justify every crime of their own making, in the past 6 years.)

He was also able to get (into the record) the fact that there was NOT an “al-Qaeda” presence in Iraq prior to the invasion and occupation, just as there was no sectarian violence prior to the invasion and occupation.

For these very small things, I am grateful.

Sadly, their voices and opinions do not matter to those making the decisions here.
After all, they are just Iraqis’ who failed to be grateful when the Shrub granted them freedom and democracy.
Shrub has set himself (rather he has been set up) as the great decider of all peoples futures. And that equals them being shot(sic) out of luck.
Shrubs’ photo need a caption--Abandon hope, all ye who trust in me (unless you are a rich Republican).
