Thompson

Fred Thompson has at long last thrown in his lot with the other (long list of) Republicans running for president. Frequently painted as an eleventh hour hero to conservatives, Thompson’s shtick so far strikes us as canned Gingrich opened long after its expiration date. What do you think?

Also, read E.J. Dionne’s latest to find out why Rudy Giuliani is smiling.

Washington Post:

“I still have the same common-sense conservative beliefs I did when I ran in 1994,” the former senator said in a speech at a Des Moines conference center, a not-so-subtle reference to criticism about the changing positions of his main Republican rivals, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

“The preseason is over,” he declared. “Let’s get on with it.”

Thompson begins at a big disadvantage in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses, trailing Romney and several others in establishing an organization here, but his advisers believe it is a contest he cannot skip. They plan to target the conservative base here, a group that has consistently expressed frustration with its presidential choices this year.

Patrick, they are as they have always been. These guys just see no reason to cover up who they are as the Alzheimers Brigade did, with their KINDER GENTLER CONSERVATISM and other BS language that was swallowed whole by enough of the voting public to put us where we are now. These boys are so arrogant that they think their power is sufficient to tell anyone who does not like their actions to stfu of just put them into one of our handy prisons or maybe a grave….....and they may be correct.

The RNC is fearful that Ron Paul will change the Republican party “back” to what it once was.

They have to trot out a familiar face that their alzheimer base supporters will recognize.

Well, now it’s official, a guy whose job it has been for a decade to suspend disbelief and recite lines convincingly is the walk-on front-runner for the remnants of the GOP. He already has neocon cred that the Bushies want and has long ago sold out to the NRA, and the Bush/CheneyReich conglomerates that run the country now. It’s just a matter of rigging a few primaries to get rid of that pesky Rudy guy with all those embarassing divorces and things he has said about freedom of choice. Not to worry, Ol’ Fred will be the GOP guy in 9 months, count on it. What a choice: this clown or Billary? My God, I want to move to Canada.

I knew when Carl Rove quit it would be to back someone candidate. This is him, no doubt. Already his campaign stategy is superior to the others. Getting weeks of free publicity by not being a candidate, how brilliant is that? So when he actually announces (on Leno!) its all the stir. And this tactic demonstrates not only his superior political savvy, but his superior fiscal abilities. Even before he joined the campaign, the Reagan comparisons were flying around. Personally…I don’t like him, He seems to appeal to this inane Reagan years worship going about, and gives some hope of “doing it right,” when he is just there to keep on keepin’ on with the same lame ass agenda. Same product, different box.

Actually Boggs, that’s the problem. They DO show up to vote.
Magic voting machines aside, that is how Shrub got as many real votes as he did. They listened to sound bites and viewed photo-ops as reality, rather than looking past all that to the real person; a supposedly recovering addict and alcoholic, a draft dodger, a failed businessman and all around cheerful idiot.
But he would cut taxes and stop the gays from getting married. Oh, and he was for smaller Government. In Shrubspeak that means no oversight of big businesses, especially oil companies, and a complete invasion of citizen privacy.

America is filled with “star struck” personalities, who have a hard time distinguishing from a TV character and real life. We have to hope this element doesn’t show up at the polls!
I think the old fart belongs in a retirement atmosphere.

He’s a Republican, correct?  I do not care if they run 9 or 90, I will trust no Republican until they do a full and thorough clean up of their party.  Something is horribly wrong within their party which I think will take several years to sort out.

Hopefully Fred past lobbyist client list will be made public and that will cool his jets.
Meantime, why can’t we hear more about Dennis K and Fred Gravel?

When I watch LAW & ORDER, Arthur Branch reminds me of Sam Ervin back in the Watergate days:  a “plain country lawyer” with a keen sense of “justice for all” and the power to exercise it.  When I read about Fred Thompson, I quickly realize that he is no Sam Ervin (even if he DID bring a certainly modicum of bipartisan dignity to the Senate when that kind of civility was in such short supply).  It really scares me to think how many people out there will vote for Fred Thompson thinking they are voting for Arthur Branch.

He is neo-con who has spent time in Hollywood perfecting his cunning and conning.
If you would like more Bush then you would love Thompson.

This guy is a real candidate because he is believable and comes across as a true leader.  You may be right, but I think that he will make it interesting.

Mr. Thomson has no qualifications to be the U.S. president except he is tall and a B grade movie actor…th qualities that seem to attract a lot of republicans.

Who’s afraid of this theatrical putz?  He is so old hat, he belongs in a museum.  Let’s focus on real issues instead of the same knee-jerk stuff that gets his narrow minded supporters excited.  Thompson can’t continue on with the Orwellian schtick.  It is dying and is completely done as of November ‘08.
