Bush to Visit Congressional ATM

The White House plans to ask for an additional $50 billion to fund the troop “surge” in Iraq. That may seem like peanuts when you consider the $607 billion in annual Defense Department and Iraq/Afghanistan supplemental funds, but it’s a sign that the administration is politically confident it can extend the surge through next spring. Plus, it’s money that could be used for something silly, like building schools.

Washington Post:

The request—which would come on top of about $460 billion in the fiscal 2008 defense budget and $147 billion in a pending supplemental bill to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq—is expected to be announced after congressional hearings scheduled for mid-September featuring the two top U.S. officials in Iraq. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker will assess the state of the war and the effect of the new strategy the U.S. military has pursued this year.

The request is being prepared now in the belief that Congress will be unlikely to balk so soon after hearing the two officials argue that there are promising developments in Iraq but that they need more time to solidify the progress they have made, a congressional aide said.

Most of the additional funding in a revised supplemental bill would pay for the current counteroffensive in Iraq, which has expanded the U.S. force there by about 28,000 troops, to about 160,000. The cost of the buildup was not included in the proposed 2008 budget because Pentagon officials said they did not know how long the troop increase would last. The decision to seek about $50 billion more appears to reflect the view in the administration that the counteroffensive will last into the spring of 2008 and will not be shortened by Congress.

This is from an article at counterpunch, although this is just a portion of the article it’s also just a PORTION of the money spent.  Trying to imagine the WHOLE Iraq War bill is really beyond imagination….kind of awe inspiring.  It’s like thinking about universes, beyond universes, beyond universes.

Which Side is the Pentagon On?
The Costs of the Afghanistan War
By WINSLOW T. WHEELER

The Department of Defense (DOD) testified to Congress on July 31, 2007 that the war in Afghanistan had cost $78.1 billion. The seeming precision of the decimal point notwithstanding, the number is laughably inaccurate. Here’s why:

The 78.1 billion is DOD “obligations” as of May 2007. Obligations are neither Congress’s appropriations nor the amount DOD has actually spent. Instead, DOD describes them as “orders placed, contracts awarded, services received, or similar transactions that will require payments.” In short, obligations are what DOD thinks it might spend. For DOD’s obligations for Afghanistan going as far back as 2001, there has been no effort by the department to documentwhat was actually spent.”

Actually that’s a great idea: a congressional ATM! Give Bush a $500 daily limit like the rest of us have with our ATMs. At least he’ll get some practical sense of the magnitude of his demands.

It’s nice to know I was right, comments posted are being deleted by the PTB at TD? The comment on this was the war cost and the breakdown info and the comment to Michael #97488 that were on this page vanished since this am. I see the FBI spy system is up and running.
For those who missed it Bush-t is spending about 200 billion dollars a year just in the mess he calls Iraq, that he admits to.This is only for Iraq. This breaks down to about $3,846,153,800 a week. Just a few months ago it was about 2 billion dollars a week. If you think that America is collecting enough taxes to pay for this guess again. They have borrowed from all over the world to pay for this and we get stuck with the bills. If Bush-t were made to pay for all this out of his money, the war would have ended amout 2 minutes after he started it. When he comes rattling his sabre wanting more money, congress has to JUST SAY NO!

It is really strange to watch the Republican’s willingly spend our money while accusing the Democrat’s of being the big spender’s.
There are even some who will argue that Shrubs’ tax cut’s have increased revenue. Which explains why there is no money for anything and why the Asian banks own so many of our IOU’s.

It is way past time to say no to this idiot and the wasting of more $$$ and lives in this money pit of a war. Congress needs to just SAY NO and stick with it. If you have to borrow $$$ from all over you cannot afford what you want. This is not a need. What we do need at home in America has been cut, short changed, totally deleted and diverted into funding this nonsense. Did the electric grid ever get fixed that went out in Bush’s first term? Back then they said it would cost 4 billion $$ to fix-too much. But we can spend that in just 1 week in only Iraq. What about Katrina. It is still a disaster zone. We have cut aid to the veterans, food stamps for their families and disabled all the while as food prices have increased due to gas prices, which have skyrocketed. We deny medical to those who once were able to work. We let in illegals and roll out the red carpet for them. We have 54 million registered people unable to find work, those whose time on the unemployment rolls has expired are not counted among those that are jobless. A truer number is probably closer to 100 million+. I can go to all the households on my block and the majority , over 80%,are unemployed as there are no jobs in this area. We have money to set up all types of surveillence equipment all over the conutry to spy on Americans, yet they cannot spy on certain people who they know are a “problem” because it racial profiles them. This country has gone to hell in a hand basket and the rest of the world doesn’t know why we keep letting this happen. One reason is most people do not even know about it is the news networks and newspapers are so censored and what does get set thru is a fabrication of the Bush administration that they are totally clueless.

It is time to cut the purse strings off from the worlds creditors to this administrations insanity. And don’t even think of invading Iran, it’s a lot bigger than Iraq and if you couldn’t squelch a smaller country like that, what the hell does Bush think he could do in a larger country.

I encourage everyone to call or atleast writetheir congressman and demand that they not hand over anymore of our, the citizen’s of america’s money to this criminal war he started. He and Cheney belong behind bars, not still bilking the american taxpayer while their personal fortunes are safely hid away out of country. And to follow-up by stating that they will not have your vote next election cycle if they give in, yet again, to the crimes of this lunatic president. We need to yank these imbecils outa there and get people in the white house who are capable of managing the drawdown of americans, both military and private, today, not tomorrow.

Yes, and what has been wasted could have fixed social security for years to come, if not the rest of this century! But, what Mr. Bush wants to do is continue funding this war of choice on credit! Yes, increase the national debit by so many more billions of dollars. That’s just what the Republicans have been doing every since Reagan started that financial fiasco called “trickle down.” Look at the state of our national debt and who has caused the bulk of it here:

http://www.lafn.org/politics/gvdc/Natl_Debt_Chart.html

If you look at this site, you can see that is/has been the Republicans, starting with Reagan, that are responsible for the vast increase in our debt, Bush 1, and now this warmonger of president continued on the same course. If you do not believe this National Debt is affecting our financial well being, consider:

1.  It is, in part, responsible for the loss of value of the US dollar against other world currencies, especially the European Euro; 45+% in only the last five years.

2.  Other nations fleeing from the US dollar as a hedge currency hasten the decline in value.

3.  Potential increase in the price of oil when oil producing countries start pricing oil in Euros, rather than dollars. (A couple have already done so, and others are considering doing so.)

4.  Some holders of our national debt are NOT our friends, China for example, and if they start calling in the debt, it could cause financial ruin for this nation.

5.  Last, but certainly not least, Bush is mortgaging the future of our greandchildren and maybe even their grandchildren’s, due to this idiotic war!

“We owe Japan $714.9 billion; China, $191.1 billion; the United
Kingdom, $152.5 billion; the Caribbean Banking Center, $76.2 billion;
Korea, $69.3 billion; OPEC nations, and we wonder by gasoline is so
high, OPEC nations, we have borrowed as a Nation $66.6 billion from
them. The list goes on and on. In fact, we have borrowed, this
administration has borrowed more money from foreign governments and
foreign banks in less than 5 years than the previous 42 Presidents
combined…”

Shrub asks for $50 billion. The past pilfering by the friendly Iraqis, the fraud by Halliburton and associates, and the thievery by Bush friends and loyalist who got fat contracts in Iraq would pay for health care for all the uninsured Americans let alone the children that Shrub would deny benefits to.
