Holocaust Survivors Protest in Jerusalem

Holocaust survivors took to the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday to protest the Israeli government’s offer of a $20 monthly stipend. A survivor group director explained the situation this way: “They have cancer 14 times more than the regular population. They break their bones due to the malnutrition they had years ago. And now when they need the help, there is nobody to turn to.”

BBC:

The protesters called their rally a “March of the Living”—a name which echoes the annual commemoration at the Auschwitz death camp in Poland to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.

One of the protesters, a survivor of the Treblinka death camp, sparked controversy by wearing prisoner clothes.

Yosef Charnyi, 82, joined the march from parliament to Mr Olmert’s office dressed in striped pyjamas with a yellow Star of David pinned to the top.

He told the AFP news agency: “We are demanding the right to finish our days decently.”

Romas need not apply.

Thank god the Native Americans are so drunk in their rez, or else America would become bankrupt
+++++++++++++

Wangman,

Not only the Native Americans, but the hordes of former slaves and their dependants are still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule, promised back at the Emancipation Proclamation.

At this point, I’d settle for ONE acre, and a volvo equipped with a hybrid fuel system. (or even a scooter with a basket for groceries)

I doubt it’s gonna happen.

RAE,

Germany has already paid close to $100 billion to the Claims Compensation fund, which declares how many survivors there are and collects from Germany accordingly.  Where the money goes, nobody knows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claims_Conference
http://www.religioustolerance.org/fin_nazi.htm

There are new victims being sought in order to create new funds to be paid by Germany.

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3269515,00.html#n

People that were not directly affected by the Holocaust are also in the process of seeking fund, including therapy fees for the “2nd generationers”:

In fact, here are all the Holocaust funds set up by all the countries that did any wrongdoing to Jews:

Romas need not apply.

Thank god the Native Americans are so drunk in their rez, or else America would become bankrupt.

Do you mean to tell me that Israeli holocaust survivors are not eligible for US Medicare/Medicade? Someone better get Pelosi on that right away.

il bagattel,

I had to laugh out loud at this one.smile

For now though, I think Pelosi has far too much on her agenda to fix this up.

RAE, FYI

The vast majority of the estimated 6 million dead Jews were the so-called Ostjuden, the Jews of Eastern Europe.  As many as 3 million were Polish.  Out of the ca. 750 000 Jews living in Germany and Austria at before the killings, maybe a quarter survived.

I don’t think the current State of Israel would exist if not for the deaths of Holocaust victims and the suffering of its survivors. Consider the historical magnitude of the staggering evil perpetrated during this dark chapter in the human story, as well as the incredible heroism, resilience, and “humanity” demonstrated by so many in reaction. I am not Jewish and I’ve criticized the Israeli government on its dealings with the Palestinians; however, these survivors are human historical treasures and should be cared for until death, and remembered after.  Anything less would be pure hypocrisy.

Ken Morgan, there were two camps at Treblinka, one an extermination camp and one a forced labor camp.

Probably a dumb question but…

Most Jews in Germany at the time of the holocaust I assume were German citizens.

It was the German government that incarcerated/tortured/murdered them.

When Israel was reestablished it opened its doors to all Jews who wanted to migrate.

I don’t understand the reasons that these former Germans now expect/demand the Israeli government to support them. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to seek retribution/support from the government that “wronged” them - Germany?

Sorry… I’m not Jewish… just ignorant, I guess.

The only democratic country in the Middle East. Israel is the only genuinely democratic state in the Middle East. It is committed to freedom and equality, and the rule of law. It embodies the fundamental values that are in tune with those of America and that America has traditionally supported. Israel’s military and political importance in the Middle East and its strategic position stabilize the entire area, including the oil fields of the Persian Gulf. During the Cold War, it was America’s indispensable rampart against the inroads and expansionist ambitions of the Soviet Union. It is now a western bulwark against the aggressive intents of Iran and other bellicose nations that threaten the interests of the United States. It is a most reliable partner in the promotion of Western strategic interests and in the stabilization of the Middle East. Over 20% of its budget goes for defense, compared to 7% in the U.S. and less than 1% in Japan. Israel has one of the best armies in the world. Its navy and air force are the major deterrent forces in the eastern Mediterranean.

OK, so lets discuss that then, cyrena. I didn’t intend my post to be a ‘lecture’ either. By the way, I’d like to “see your library” some time, too, ha ha....

Here’s an interesting point - the Australian government recently announced a $25,000 compensation payment on top of pensions, etc for ex-prisoners of war. There should be plenty of Jews living there, especially in Melbourne and Sydney. I don’t know if they are entitled as holocaust victims as well, though. It would be interesting if someone from J-Post or Haaretz or the like checked around and compared what was available to people in similar categories in other countries to confront their own stupid government with.......

“The 1948 Arab-Israeli War, also known as the Israeli War of Independence, was the first in a series of wars fought between the State of Israel and its Arab neighbors in the long-running Arab-Israeli conflict. For Israelis, the war marks the successful establishment of the Israeli state, but for Palestinian Arabs, it signifies the beginning of the events referred to as “al Nakba” - “the Catastrophe”, a term used to describe the fleeing or expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian residents from the newly created state of Israel......”
Hey Doug,

I actually know all of this stuff, particularly about the al Nakba, and you would be impressed with my library.

So, it was a grammatical error I guess, for me to say that Israel was born as a “result”. It definitely didn’t convey what I intended. I was more focusing on the whole reason that it came to be, which was supposedly to “accommodate” the survivors of the Holocaust, and give them their own special place to be. And, even after all the years of damage, destruction, and on-going al-Nakba; after purging millions of Arabs from the land, they STILL don’t even take care of these survivors, that were supposed to be so well taken care of, just based on the whole ideology that they perpetrate. Kinda hypocritcal if ya ask me. Not unlike the way things are done here though.

Which simply adds to the crimes against humanity. Israel has a very bad record here.

These are two distinct and different things and each has a separate history. Somehow, though, many in Israel have mixed them (and their religious fantasies) in their minds and there is no longer any logic in their justifications for their present repression of other Palestinians (it was once all Palestine).

If you want to sympathise, do so as far as the European repression was concerned. But remember that many of those who fled then did almost the same in turn to their Arab Christian and Moslem brothers and sisters. What is worse, it still continues 59 years later!

But lets not forget, either, that these last few days were the commemoration of another WW2 catastrophe. Again pathetically ignored by Truthdig, the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima was perpetrated wantonly and unnecessarily by the USA on 6th August, 1945:-

“The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks during World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States of America under US President Harry S. Truman. On August 6, 1945, the nuclear weapon “Little Boy” was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, followed on August 9, 1945 by the detonation of the “Fat Man” nuclear bomb over Nagasaki. They are the only instances of the use of nuclear weapons in warfare (so far!!!).....” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hirosh ima_and_Nagasaki

Stuff like this and the bridge in Minneapolis and the levees in New Orleans should never have become a problem.

Elected officials are so busy raising money for re-election they don’t have time to take care of their duties.

Nobody seems to notice we are killing hundreds of thousands of people without ethical, rational, or legal justification, either.

You could shout “mass murder” all day long and no one would notice. Holocaust survivors living on twenty bucks a month hardly registers in anyone’s mind.

But Lindsay Lohan, Anna Nicole, that’s news.

When I thought I heard it all and knew it all about Israel, pieces of news keep coming to amaze me and perplex my shattered humanity.

This piece of news amazed me at two levels. On one level, I always assumed the Holocaust survivors were the envy of all senior citizens in the world in terms of the benefits and care they receive. So this piece of information came as a big shock to me. More so, according to the story, that this is the first Israeli government to offer such crumbs to the 250,000 Holocaust survivors. I don’t blame them if they commit suicide en masse for adding insult to their injuries.

Secondly, I am amazed and perplexed for learning that those people did not receive any government help all these years despite of the fact that the Israeli government has collected in their names untold billions from Germany, the United States and other agencies and governments over the years. This was so to the point that someone wrote about the Holocaust as being one of the biggest money generating industries in Israel. Where do these billions go? And were is the fair share of the Holocaust survivors.

Moreover, and in connection to this, Israel is on record as offering up to quarter of a million dollars to Jewish settlers in the Palestinian occupied territories. Why there is this big money to illegally settle Palestinian occupied land, and there is no money for the elderly Holocaust survivors. Based on this, one can say that in the sight of the Israeli government some Jews are worth more as dead as they worth alive.

If the war machine budget of Israel is reduced by just 1%, I am sure that the money saved would suffice those people to live their final years of life in dignity.

Though I am an American of Palestinian background, whom the creation of Israel and its injustices and occupation have shattered my life in many ways, in my humanity, I am willing to take one of those cousins of ours and offer him / her shelter in my two-room apartment to eat from what I eat and to be clothed as I cloth myself and to offer him or her $ 100 per month as pocket money. We need 249,999 more individuals to do what I am willing to do, and further put the Israeli government and its so-called allies in wars and occupation to another historical shame!

Hmm.  There were supposedly only 70 survivors of Treblinka.  This guy’s name doesn’t appear on any list of those survivors.

And, as alleged, Treblinka wasn’t a concentration camp, it was an extermination camp.  No labor was done there except the sorting of victim’s goods.  Striped prison uniforms were never issued at Treblinka, the small contingent of prisoner laborers wore civiilan clothing, either what they had brought or drawn from what was plundered.  If this guy was at Treblinka, he never wore that striped uniform there.

In 1971 Martin Gray published his book “For Those I Loved”, where he claimed to be a Treblinka survivor.  It didn’t take long to prove he was lying.  I wonder what a background check on Yosef Charnyi would show.

And where did he get those statistics on a cancer rate “14 times” more than the average?  Does he mean the average for people in that age group?  If that’s true, it’s the eighth wonder of the medical world.  For instance, if Charnyi is 82, then he was 18 when Treblinka was closed down, and I’ve never heard of a substance that he or anybody else could have been exposed to that would cause epidemic cancers sixty-four years later.  If this is true, oncological researchers have a lot to explain.  If not, Charnyi should confess that he made the statistic up.

Why aren’t the keepers of the Shoal flame making a case of this?  They sure went after everyone they could in Europe and pocketed most of the proceeds.  While the survivors in Israel are left to starve, and the Banks in Israel are allowed to drag their feet over searching for survivor’s funds.

So true RAE. I read this last night from the BBC site, and even saved the link. I was going to post it here, when I noticed they already had.

Anyway, as I read it, I thought...gee. This has been the problem here, for years now. We work and work and work and when we can’t any longer, we’re screwed. The bureaucracy involved now, with just collecting what we’ve already put into the system, has become, well, next to impossible. Not 100% impossible, but next to it. Meantime, there are all of those who have never even paid into it. They don’t stand a prayer, which is why the homeless ranks have so swelled. People living in their cars, if they’ve still got those.

But here, in America, we’ve been watching it for years now, and certainly our own government is responsible for that. BUT, this is ISRAEL...the State that was born as a result of the Holcaust. A place for the survivors and all Jews. A place of their own. And, this is how the government of Israel, TREATS their own.

So, Americans get pissed that we send all of these billions of dollars of aid to Israel, (even though we don’t feed or house any of our own “survivors")and Israel’s government obviously isn’t using those billions to take care of their own either.

But then, I’m not surprised.

And “finish their days” they will… waiting, while the governments stonewall and dither and procrastinate. When they’re all dead and buried the governments will then announce major funding to support the needs of holocaust survivors.

Please don’t take this as an anti-semitic blogging. It doesn’t matter your race or religion or situation/condition… the government set in authority over you will screw you every chance they get. That’s the ONLY thing governments do best.
