Rumsfeld Lies?:  Pat Tillman Case Review

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld made a cameo appearance on Capitol Hill Wednesday to testify about what he knew, and when, regarding the death of Cpl. Pat Tillman.  Facing Reps. Henry Waxman, Dennis Kucinich and others, a fidgety Rumsfeld denied that there was a cover-up, denied that he played any part in mischaracterizing Tillman’s death, and explained the difference between an “error” and a “lie.”

Los Angeles Times:

“Of course there’s a difference between error and coverup,” Rumsfeld told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has held several hearings on the case.

Once the Army began investigating who suppressed details of Tillman’s death, Rumsfeld said, he deliberately asked no questions to avoid exercising undue command influence over the process.

RAE:

If it’s the bears and the raccoons, and the coyotes, and the skunks and rats and things that you’re looking forward to tangling with, you don’t have to go to the woods. You all could just move into this compound of tree-houses where I live!!!

Well, maybe I can’t promise bears, but we’ve got all the rest of those critters nearby. Then again, we’ve also got a month-old fire not too far away, and it has been uncontainable and taken a whole bunch of wild forest acreage.  Many of the long term human occupants need to evacuate, and that leads me to consider the possibility that some bears may choose to do the same thing. There’s no way my little tiny tree-house would hold up under an assault from a bear.

And, I should probably be looking into old-folks homes myself, but that wouldn’t work too well for me either, since I can’t afford to pay for them. Maybe you should send your address as well, once you get settled. smile

cyrena posted, re our pending move to the woods (I was going to say “bush” but I didn’t want to risk being misinterpreted):

“It turned out to be a nightmare though, because in reality, it DOES isolate us too much from each other.”

Yup… I don’t mind a little interaction with others once in a while but if my choice is between “too much” and “too little,” I’ll take too little. I’ve had too much of too much and too little of too little. (I think there’s a country song in there somewhere.)

And Chalmers, I agree that the “idyllic” life perhaps no longer is available on this planet. But I don’t know because I’ve never tried. My vision of the good life is not likely shared by many.

At my age I should probably be getting my name on waiting lists for old folks homes but I’d rather die alone in the woods or go down flailing away with an ornery bear or racoon or field mouse than sit in some stinking rocking chair being patronized by someone who can’t wait for quitting time.

Anyway, if and when I get snail email (dial up) working and if I can find time away from those pesky chores (keeping wolves from the door, I understand, is one of them), I’ll keep y’all posted.

Bear spray works on all living things, doesn’t it?

RAE, There is nothing the least bit naive about your assumptions. All that you post, IS what America is supposed to be about, and you have every rational reason to be amazed that more Americans have not moved to take back their country. I would say it’s because the majority is actually far more -naive- than you or the majority of posters here.

So, I feel ya. I don’t know if the move to the country will help, (though I understand the hope for that, and find it very “human”). I too, have lived “in the country” for a large part of my life, having chosen it as a “refuge” of sorts. It turned out to be a nightmare though, because in reality, it DOES isolate us too much from each other. That is of course just my “opinion” based on my own experience.
(though I should say that my own wasn’t nearly as “complete” as what you’re suggesting, since it was more of an “isolation by sub-division” that put me in a pocket with an entire community of “deniers” who still had access to all of the comforts of the “modern society”.)

I do know others though, who have recently undertaken the same…that move to the “utopia” of the mountains or the sea, or the plains and the forests. I don’t think any of us should necessarily knock it, unless we’ve tried it.

So, I wish you the best on that. Keep us posted.

Its already been tried back in the 1930’s, RAE. Some who led an idyllic temporary existence on a Pacific atoll suddenly found WW2 arriving on their doorstep. Then again, a few others in W.Europe lived on a farm outside of town and never saw a Nazi trooper all through the war.

Having lived in the country before, think seriously about how this firewood and well water situation is going to be managed….... but do stay connected, eh, ha ha! And the cost of gas for hauling supplies…...... could soon go up dramatically….. Enjoy the peace and quiet - and meditate on TRUTH!!!

OK, Cyrena & Chalmers… I admit to a naivete so profound it’s embarrassing. I actually EXPECT those in public office to tell the truth and to execute their duties to the best of their abilities on behalf of those who ELECT and PAY them.

Chalmers is quite correct that I am in “denial.” But it’s not a denial that the crooks ARE now in control but rather, I can’t believe HOW the American people allowed them to take over. I suffer from the mass mythology that an American is this rugged individualist standing up not only for his/her own rights but those of all the world’s oppressed as well.

I actually thought that the system of jurisprudence applied to everyone equally. And silly me, I actually bought the notion that in America, the PEOPLE were in control of their governments and military and that when “wrongdoing” was discovered the sheriff would nab the miscreant and haul his/her ass before the judge.

I now understand that the American people, by and large, are simply powerless pawns in a global power game; that those in law enforcement, including my trusty sheriff, are every bit as corrupt as the politicians and the other thieves and liars set in authority over us.

I know that not ALL the leadership is without principles, scruples and morals and ethics. But I fear that too few remain who do possess honest standards to effectively repair the damage that’s been done by those whose only goal is to acquire power and wealth and who believe that any means necessary justify that end.

My partner & I are so pissed off at what’s going on that we are moving this month from our small city home to an acreage in the bush. Not so deep into the woods that we’re completely off the grid, but far enough that we have no neighbors and can safely IGNORE most of the outside world most of the time. No TV and only dial-up internet. Wood stove for heat. Well water.

We may find this move is still not far enough away.

In some of the latest reporting from the AP on Tillman’s death, Sgt. Bryan O’Neal reportedly said that the shooters from the other Ranger unit were approximately 50 yards away.

Military doctors who examined Tillman’s body reportedly conjectured that he was shot at close range (10 yards or so) because of the three, apparently precise, bullet wounds to the forehead.

However, O’Neal states that at least two U.S. snipers were with the other unit and were making their way along a ridge prior to the friendly fire.

This would explain his memory of them being 50 yards away, and the doctors’ opinion that the shots could have been fired from close range.

In the case of snipers, it seems that their high-powered sniper scopes would have allowed them to see that the other soldiers were Americans.

When I wrote the article referenced below, I believed our Army and Marine Corps would retain their honor, despite this dishonorable war created by dishonorable politicians and war profiteers. Now, I am not so sure.

I do often wonder if those in this administration are the liers to the extent to which we all believe they are.  Rumsfeld, I will admit was convincing in his “testimony”, and briefly, I was inclined to believe him.  Kucinich did a good job of tripping him up, reminding us of all of the meticulously planned media drama that we have been subjected to and told was news over the last few years.  But Rumsfeld is of a different era.  Its no secret any longer that governmnets, in a time of war, will use propaganda to appease the masses, knowing full well the value of public support for the cause, and the importance of nurturing the people’s patriotism and morale.  FDR and Truman went to greater lengths during WWII than staging ridiculous events such as the “Mission Accomplished” charade.

I can forgive such foolishness under the pretext of maintaining support and morale.  What I fear though, is that the whole exercise is far more sinister under the surface.  The linchpin in the whole drama they are attempting to create is 9/11.  If 9/11 was in fact caused by terrorists and went according to the government’s version of events, then the rest, while being duplicitous, manipulative & nefarious, can be forgiven to some extent under the pretext of war.  But if 9/11 is exposed as the bedrock lie that spawned the rest of the lies, then we are truly in the danger (and living in a scarier reality than fiction, as cyrena says) some people have been predicting.  Personally, I think all US governments have partipated in, to one extent or another, the same kind of perception manipulation.  But as I’ve said all along, I don’t believe that any have done so with such carelessness, grandiose agendas, or such blatant disregard for the public’s intellect.  If 9/11 was a false flag effort to start the wars in the Middle East, and not merely a grotesque overreaction to the crimes of non-state actors (as I and many others suspect) it sure goes a long way to explaining the “reality” that punches its holes through their charade - in my mind at least.

....“As I said… if you’ve got PROOF he’s lying then you have an OBLIGATION to bring it to the attention of the authorities. If you don’t… then please just SHUT UP and quit wasting our time. Thank you.”...

Actually RAE, I think Douglas already pointed out about the “proof”. There’s 7 years worth of recent stuff, and we can go back a few decades as well. To be honest, after all of that, his signature on the PNAC is proof enough for me.

But, I had to chuckle at your suggestion that we get over to our nearest law enforcement agency, and maybe have him arrested or whatever, as long as we’ve got the PROOF.
Now, hypothetically, I could come up with all of the “proof”, probably as early as Monday, but…WHERE would I present it? To WHOM would I present it? Which “authorities” should I advise?

And, once we’ve figured that out, and I’m prepared to make this citizen’s arrest, with all of the proper evidence and documentation, what should realistically expect to result from those efforts, given what we’ve come to see as standard everyday hearings in the halls of Congress, on this same general concept of lying. In other words, when I do notify the authorities, should I realistically expect much more than a free ride to the nearest mental health facility at best, or an expedited CIA rendition to caves unknown, at worst?

Therein lies the dilemma.

At the end of the day, we all know he’s lying, but all the proof in the world doesn’t mean a thing, when one (or all of us) is under siege by such a well-established network/Cabal.

It’s scarier than anything James Patterson has ever written, and he’s one of my favorite thrillers.

Matter of fact, I think I’ll read something of his now. That is a sad testament to the American psychology at this point in history…that one would choose such hair raising “fiction” as a temporary escape from our much scarier reality.

I think your problem is denial and a paralysing underlying FEAR. All of you! Until then quit wasting our time by allowing them to SHUT you UP by using such fear as a weapon against you!

Would those who have PROOF please contact their nearest police agency and bring charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Would everyone else PLEASE arm their opinions with FACTS and REASON before SHOOTING OFF THEIR MOUTHS.

I too dislike Rumsfeld INTENSELY for many reasons that are purely personal preferences. I wouldn’t buy a used car from the creep. BUT… that does NOT make him a liar or guilty of any of the other broadsides that are cast on him by contributors to these forums.

This bumbling incompetent ran our country’s defense for seven years and can’t remember if he put on underwear this morning-sure. Of course he is lying, but why shouldn’t he? Even if the coverup is exposed, der Fuhrer will wipe out any criminal conviction. These bastards are above the rule of law. Pat Tillman got in the way, was snuffed, and then used as a ‘let’s fight a new war’ poster boy until someone with a guilty conscience blew a whistle making a lame cover story necessary. But it was an ‘error’ not a ‘lie’.

What a prick!  He basically said to Mrs. Tillman:

your son is dead & you have no “facts” to back up any cover up.  Within the 5 or 6 investigations, there were “errors”, but that’s not important.  Get it over it, you godless liberal.

We should send him to the streets of Baghdag w/ no military protection around.  I am sure the Iraqis would abide by the Geneva Convention laws when they get a hold of him.  After all, his legay is that of Abu Ghraib prison.

Well, there you have it….. “the known knowns, the unknown unknowns, and the known unknowns” ....then there are the ‘unknown knowns’ which we don’t want you to know…!

Now, there is the difference between an “error” and a “lie”. That is something I know ...it is a known… and you don’t ...it is an unknown….. That is my sympathy because you couldn’t possibly know…!

Merely “questions rather than assertions”... A “coverup” ....no-one suggested that to me! “Press strategies… I don’t recall….. you’d have to ask the White House…”

So, DOD = ‘Dead on your Doormat’ (your son!). Sorry, Ms. Tillman.

When such a person in that situation answers “to the best of my ability” or “to the extent of my ability” and that is unsatisfactory, the Congress shouls be able to immediately sack that person!!!

“...Are you kidding? Do you remember Harry Whittington?...One hunting trip is all it takes….Of course ‘I don’t recall’. I don’t want to eat buck shot. In fact I don’t recall anything from the years in which I’ve known Dick. “
