House Panel Demands Records About Tillman

House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and his Republican committee colleague Rep. Tom Davis are putting pressure on the White House and the Defense Department to hand over records about the death of Pat Tillman.  The administration has been keeping the documents secret, citing its executive confidentiality prerogative.

Associated Press via Huffington Post:

Tillman’s family and others have said they believe the erroneous information peddled by the Pentagon was part of a deliberate cover-up that may have reached all the way to President Bush and then-Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld. The committee said Friday it had scheduled a second hearing on Tillman’s death for Aug. 1, this time to probe what senior Pentagon officials knew and when.

Rumsfeld and Richard Myers, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were among those the committee invited Friday to appear.

I keep telling others(since I have an agenda)that a coup d’etat launched by disaffected among the top military brass would be an effective means of expressing just how upset THEY are at the grossly incompetent machinations of this pathetic administration.

====================================================

I don’t see that happening. But, I suppose we haven’t seen the worst…

Kwagmire, as much as I want to be rid of the Shrub and the Shootist, I truly hope that the military doesn’t get involved.
Although the idea of the two of them being quick marched at bayonet point into Guantanamo brings a smile to this old face, we would be better served by demanding, as I do, that our Congress Critter’s remember that they swore an oath to preserve the Constitution; and that oath transcends any Party loyalty.

The boys in this administration could care less about being within the law.
Poor Alberto could have graduated from Yale and been editor of the Law Review and he would still make the same rulings.
Those rulings aren’t really his interpretation of the law, but rather, his effort to be a part of history. That this administration will go down in history as a example of the worst administration that America has ever seen is lost on him.
Just as Der Karl can see no reason to apologize for his part in bringing this fool to power, the Brown One thinks all is well.

There are absolutely NO legal grounds for the assertion that these records are privileged. This is what happens when the President surrounds himself with graduates of “I Couldn’t Get Into A Real Law School So God Sent Me To A Religious Law School Instead.”  The legal incompetence of this administration is both infuriating and scary.

I believe this congress would LOVE to impeach both of these aholes but don’t have enough votes to do it! Too many repugs left who can’t bring themselves to do what needs to be done-refusing to vote for anything that would bring accountability to this war, or would force a change in the way it’s being conducted is an example. They KNOW the war was lost long ago and by not standing up and opposing the shrub have allowed it to go on even though PRIVATELY they see the truth.

Naw, I can’t see that the incident was ordered from on high. Bad things happen in combat, hence War is Hell…and the famous quote from many years ago: It is good that war is so terrible, lest we grow too fond of it.
‘Course, the Shrub, having paid no attention in school, never reading a book and masterfully evading serving his country, is totally unaware of that. Besides, it ain’t his butt on the firing line, not with all the Secret Service Agents around him. “Bring ‘em on” indeed.
And 1Sgt, I agree that our military has and will continue to suffer mightily because of Shrub and Rummy, the man who single-handedily re-invented how war will be fought. I liked the old version, where we tried to win.
While civilian control of the military is mandatory for a democracy, it seems that we would be best served by leaving fighting up to those who have made a profession out of it. In other words, when the lace panty folks at Foggy Bottom screw things up and war is the only option left, the President tells the Joint Chiefs, this is your mission, this is your enemy and we expect victory.
Then the civilians need to shut up and sit back.
But Duhbya, who had conned his way into the Air National Guard and had his picture taken in his poopy suit (before asking for early dismissal for political reasons), and Rummy who had actually sat in the cockpit of a naval aircraft during peacetime, had to tell the Generals how they wanted things done.
And look at the results. The non existent quagmire suddenly exists.
At least in ‘Nam, we were up against a trained military, mostly. Here, we are up against a bunch of rag heads with only basic guerrilla training. Plus being willing to kill themselves without some officer prodding them in back, with an AK47.
Meanwhile the Shrub goes to sleep early each night, sleeps well all night long and wakes up knowing that he is a little richer, richer than he could have ever been had he not conned his way into the White House via Der Karls’ Disinformation Bureau.

Does anyone think it possible that Tillman’s murder was ordered from the top, whoever that is? A high-profile guy makes a great hero for propaganda purposes.

As for the nickname ‘Scooter’, I’ve known several dogs and cats with that name. They’re the ones who drag their butts across the carpet.

It is just a shame that the troops don’t have a President who is worthy of their efforts.
===================================================
Farmertx, Many of us knew back in 2003 this was all a bunch of BS on the WMD. Hell, I had a Major, she was our unit commander and she was winking in her staff meeting when she mentioned the WMD reason. We all kind of went along with this because these are the orders of the officers appointd over us and all of us figured there was information we were not privy to which would make all this make more sense.

Of course, today we know there is no ryme or reason for this war other than control of oil and protection of Israel. You might add in vengeance for the attempt on his father (note the killing of Saddam’s sons), and some crazed apocalyptic fantasy’s of Armageddon and whatever else Bush gets from religion.

This President definitely has no regard for the people in uniform. This man ignores our laws, starts wars against people who have done us no harm and even after making mistakes, he does not admit them. He is the dumbest occupant of the white house. We the people are to be faulted for allowing this to happen. The damage he has done will take decades to fix.

Also, he is not a commander. A good commander knows Sgt’s don’t make the ultimate decisions and he must be stupid if he thinks the public believes the line that he “will not circumvent the commanders in the field” or words to that effect. He’s just a very dumb person. Plain and simple.

I thought Bill Clinton was no friend of the troops when he was elected. You could tell right away the salutes to him got sloppy and that was a reflection of what we thought about him as military people.

Then Bush the son came in and we thought he was a breath of fresh air until he attacked Iraq. It’s been downhill since then.

he has DESTROYED the military. You won’t be able to tell right away, but in the next 10 years you will see the professional military will be gone.

Maybe this will be better. This way every one can share the burden the next time we have a nutjob as president, wanting to kill people he doesn’t understand.

Cyrena, wrong topic, but were it not so terrible for the country, this administration could well be a National Lampoon Presidential Series.

First Shirt, I have tremendous respect for any soldier who serves his country in combat. It isn’t up to the individual soldier’s to pick which battle they will fight. That is done by the political leadership. It is just a shame that the troops don’t have a President who is worthy of their efforts.

And, lets face it; lies, smoke and mirrors is all Duhbya has going for him. Truth and reality reveal him to be the epitome of the Peter Principle. (Elevated way beyond his abilities)

Nothing surprises me from this administration anymore. They just want to cover up the fact they knew it was friendly fire and instead lied about it by spinning it to make Tillman a hero.

His status as a PRO in the NFL makes him different. They did not want the headline of “US soldier killed in friendly fire” and they certainly did not want the headline of “former NFL Pro killed in friendly fire”.

So they lied about it to make him a hero, which I am sure he fought like a hero, only to be killed by US forces in an accident.

Here in Arizona, where Pat Tillman played football at Arizona State and then for the Arizona Cardinals, his death from friendly fire and the apparent cover-up have been noted by many Arizonans.

Our Arizona senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, have been two of the major cheerleaders for the Iraq war. It is probable that they are losing the support of many Arizonans.

People here, like elsewhere, seem to be losing confidence in the current administration and the reasons for the invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq.

Food for thought in the article:

....”(what kind of grown man in public life is known by such a nickname?”....

Oh farmertx, I had to laugh out loud. But, in all seriousness, THAT (along with everything else we’ve seen and predicted) is the ULTIMATE proof of power and “royalty”. If you have enough “power” to get yourself out of serving a day of a legitimate prison sentence, than I guess you can call yourself any damn thing you WANT!! Like Cheney designating himself as “The Angler”. I could think of others more colorful though.

DennisD is so right about this worthless Congress. If you Congressman can’t do the job, don’t take the paycheck. These people would have been fired a long time ago in the private sector.
One day I read: Major General Stanley McCrystal sent a memo to Bush warning Bush he would embarrass himself if Bush said Pat Tillman died in an ambush. Now nobody can find e-mails and memo’s. It is a disgrace to use a dead hero because Bush perceived it as a way of making himself look good. Bush used Jessica Lynch, spouting off how she fought the enemy off. Jessica being a true hero and good american could not live with the lies Bush and his band of criminals were ‘shoveling in heaps’ on the american people and told the truth. Lynch is a hero as is Pat Tillman.

We don’t need men (Bush and Cheney) to frightened to fight for their country during the Vietnam war, pushing their bullshit on us and telling kids how they should be proud to join up..Why didn’t you fight Mr. President? How about you Mr. Deferment,  I mean Mr. Cheney.

Bush, Cheney, and a dozen others need a good tar and feathering. Let’s impeach immediately and if you don’t have the stomache to do what needs done quit the Congress and let those who are true americans take over.

DennisD pretty well nailed it.
With all due respect to the Tillman family, we can be fairly certain that the Shrub administration was involved in a cover up so they would have a “good” story for the media.
Just as most of us were proven right about the end result of bringing charges against the Scooter, (what kind of grown man in public life is known by such a nickname?) this investigation will tell us what we already know.
Rather than trying to grab headlines with useless investigations/hearings/non-binding resolutions, they would be better off helping us get rid of these bozo’s (Shrub/Shootist); you know, representing the constituents?

Let’s face it, this Congress could find Bu$h & Cheney with the smoking gun in their hands and still wouldn’t IMPEACH these assholes so what’s the point of all this.
The appearance of doing something is all they care about not results. It’s just another way for them to dodge the real issues and concentrate on the superficial. I think they’re about to set a record for the number of hearings held and nothing to show for any of them. Congress stay the f**k home, you’re completely irrelevant.
