Not Your Father’s Heat Wave

While it may be frowned upon to discuss the weather, in this age of global warming it’s worth noting that the current heat wave is expected to break records throughout the western United States. Boise, Idaho, for instance, is about to be 6 degrees hotter than ever, while the town of Baker, Calif., which conveniently possesses a 134-foot-tall thermometer, recently topped off at 125 degrees. Can the ice caps be far behind?

AP via Yahoo:

Even Stanley, Idaho, which at more than 6,000 feet elevation is routinely the coldest place in the lower 48 states, was seeing record highs, the National Weather Service said. The remote town in the Sawtooth Mountains reached 92 degrees Thursday, and was expected to hit 93 degrees Friday.

Hardly anyone in the tiny town has air conditioning, said Nancy Anderson, Stanley deputy city clerk. “They’re all going to the lakes and the rivers and trying to find the shade,” she said.

At least 150,000 people were expected to flock to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada and Arizona in hopes of cooling off in the water this weekend, said Roxanne Dey, recreation area spokeswoman.

“If you really want some facts about global warming, try this one by a NASA scientist, which warns of a much faster rate of ice cap melting, possibly resulting in a 80 meter sea level rise,...”

Are you sure it was 80 METERS? Seems I read a thing just yesterday that said 80 FEET, regardless still enough to sink east coast cities, a major portion of Florida, as well as much of the Gulf Coast.

If you really want some facts about global warming, try this one by a NASA scientist, which warns of a much faster rate of ice cap melting, possibly resulting in a 80 meter sea level rise, enough to drown most of the Eastern seaboard: http://pubs.giss.nasa.gov/docs/2007/2007_Hansen_etal_2.pdf

DennisD: surely you are joking. There are not “equal numbers” of scientists “for and against” global warming. Typical right wing lie. There are only a miniscule fraction of “scientists” (estimated at less than 2%) arguing against global warming (more properly called “climate change"), most of them funded by Big Oil. As for those who say that extreme cold belies the reality of climate change, they are missing the point. The greenhouse effect will cause extremes of temperature at both ends of the equation, but the long term effect will be to increase the global temperatures, causing massive changes in the weather patterns, which we are now experiencing.
If you like this hot weather now, just do nothing and wait—it is only going to get worse.

The weather patterns may indeed be changing just as they have throughout recorded history. Scientists have discovered that Greenland was actually once “green” beneath it’s permafrost. You’ll find an equal number of scientists for and against the global warming argument.
If anyone thinks that countries are going to shutdown or drastically curtail the industries that provide their people jobs which gives them their tax base, you’re crazy as a sh*t house rats. That goes for whoever is in the Out House at any given time. Lets all go back to Medieval times to satisfy the eco-freaks - most of whom wouldn’t last a week under any conditions but what they enjoy now, so get off this crap. The world has enough real problems to deal with, without chasing straw man arguments. Does world hunger, AIDS, poverty, war etc. etc. ring any bells.
This is starting to sound like Bill O’Unreality’s fight to save Christmas.
I guarantee you won’t hear if Stanley, Idaho has a colder winter than normal because that won’t conveniently fit the argument.

We have been warned. If we allow ourselves to be swayed by large commercial interests over sound science than whose fault is it.I still remember the American Tobacco Institute claiming that the health reports on cigarette smoking being bad for your health were inconclusive.I know it would be a lot to ask for the American public to learn from previous mistakes in judgment but I am hopeful.I was more hopeful before my generation that lived through Vietnam allowed a moron to take us into another war mess.Side note/before you listen to one word from the Competitive Enterprise Institute think tank go to their website and check out the donor list.

The fact remains that though many naysayers may acknowledge the fact of warming, few will accept human contribution. This is a global catastrophe, but big business will never accept responsiblity for it’s contributions.

Nero (Bush) fiddles while Rome (the World) burns. Let’s see him deal with 100-120 degree heat without air conditioning for awhile.
