Democrats Rake It In

The Democratic candidates have won the latest round of fundraising in what is expected to be the most expensive election ever. Here’s what the candidates took in, in millions: Obama - $32.5, Clinton - $27, Edwards - $9, Richardson - $7, Giuliani - $15, Romney - $14, and McCain - $11. Going by estimates, Obama had more individual donors than Giuliani, Romney and McCain combined.

Washington Post:

Obama, in particular, has had tremendous success raising money from small donors on the Internet. Aides said that 110,000 people have contributed to his campaign by making small donations through the Internet.

Political observers said the Democratic enthusiasm is being fueled by anger over the Iraq war, while dissatisfaction among conservative Republicans with their choices has dampened the mood of traditional GOP givers.

“Those folks are just raising up a storm of money,” said Gary Nordlinger, a Democratic consultant. “What you are showing is that there is a heck of a lot more grass-roots enthusiasm among the Democratic base than there is among the Republican base.”

I don’t think the republicans are worried about fund raising at this point.  In my opinion, the overwhelming majority of republicans and independents will never consider voting for any of the democrat candidates. The important fund raising season begins next year after the primaries.  It is likely that the republicans will far exceed democrat fund raising then.  They will then fully support their nominee and elect him.  The defections from the democrat party will be huge when they enter the voting booth and their choice will be limited to the socialist Clinton or the more acceptable but inexperienced Obama.

I WISH offices were sold to the highest bidder. If that were the case, I’d be feeling pretty good about now regarding the chances of Obama and Hillary. (I hear Gore has a nice pile as well, should he decide to step in.) I’m totally down with paying any price, bearing any burden, to make the White House Bush-free.

The people should take notice that the people who have raised the most money owe the most to the people who gave it.If you think big donors are in to see good government I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.Until we the people reorganize federal politics with public financing the attractiveness of a rich man with a soul like Bloomberg who would be able to make every decision as President on the merits without kissing one corporations ass is so attractive to me that I have to go lie down.

The presidential camaign has now become a whoring contest. It’s not about what the candidates say, or how many voters like them. It’s about how much money these whores can collect.

I watch the PBS Newshour when I’m not working an afternoon shift. It airs on the government-run channel here that shows foreign news programmes. (So strange to see an hour of Lebanese news, in Arabic, in the middle of Oz...) The last report on the U.S. presidential race on Lehrer was all about money, Money, MONEY! Voters and issues were not mentioned at all. Just “how many millions of dollars.” Totally blatant.

America should stop pretending to be a democracy. It’s now a place where public offices are sold to the highest bidders. You need to invent a new word for the system, like “buy-offracy.”

What a ridiculous waste of money.

A country that cannot afford to provide all citizens with even basic health insurance doesn’t seem to have any problem coming up with a few hundred MILLION to blow on HYPE, HOOPLA and HORSESHIT.

While I offer congratulations on your Independence Day 2007, I have serious concerns that you have that many more in store for you. Once Americans learn how to look after their OWN citizens properly only then will they have earned the right to tell others how to organize themselves.
