Toby, to answer your query, no, most of us can’t imagine being in a car suddenly engulfed in flames inside and out while driving along, because we don’t drive around in cars with interiors full of gasoline and nails.  A cars gas tank is on the outside of the body, Toby, protecting the passengers with a steel firewall, and modenr auto gas tanks don’t spontaneously burst into flames unless ruptured in a collision.  Even if that somehow DID happen, the fire would be on the outside and these guys who were driving driving an otherwise undamaged car could stop and get out. They obviously were not interested in escaping the flames. They were interested in continuing to drive to getting the flaming vehicle into the airport building. 

I guess you also missed the part about eyewitnesses seeing omne of the two passengers deliberately set himself on fire after he exited the vehicle? Do most people do that after escaping an ‘accident’?

Seriously, are you people so desperate to believe in some conspiracy that you have completely thrown logic and common sense out the window? That is just sad.

It’s the ideology of Jihad and Jew-hatred that drives these killers, not their education or economic situation.

  I think most terrorists are driven by a sense of wrong toward the group they identify with. They raise a particular cause above the value of human life. I call that getting it backwards. Politics/religion/ideology is supposed to serve human life, not be a cause for its destruction. The liberal view that terrorists are made because of poverty/lack of opportunity isn’t literally true. Although I think many terrorists see the bulk of the members of their identity group as lacking opportunity. So IMO they join up out of a sense of helping their particular group.

  The problem comes in that they have the mentality, “the other side isn’t doing what we want because we haven’t hurt them enough yet”. Of course human nature is such that the more you hurt the other guy, the less likely he is to do as you wish.

  I think the expanding settlements have made many of the Palestinians desperate, and that leads to terrorism.

You know, the bad news from checkpoints is what dominates the news - I’ve read many accounts of positive interaction between the soldiers and the Arab civilians passing through them. If you like I can dig some stuff up and try and post it here. Of course there are resentments. It’s not a healthy situation for both sides. These soldiers are citizen-soldiers from all walks of life, and they train to defend their nation mostly for conventional warfare. They are mostly good kids who are not professional, career soldiers who don’t want to hassle anybody, let alone be there in the first place, but it does happen sometimes, no doubt.

MI5 ‘helped IRA buy bomb parts in US’

A FORMER British Army mole in the IRA has claimed that MI5 arranged a weapons-buying trip to America in which he obtained detonators, later used by terrorists to murder soldiers and police officers.
In a book to be published next month, the spy, who uses the pseudonym Kevin Fulton, describes in detail how British intelligence co-operated with the FBI to ensure his trip to New York in the 1990s went ahead without incident so that his cover would not be blown.

He claims the technology he obtained has been used in Northern Ireland and copied by terrorists in Iraq in roadside bombs that have killed British troops.

In the book, Unsung Hero, Fulton tells of his double life in which he had to play a convincing IRA man while working for the British. “You cannot pretend to be a terrorist,” said Fulton, who now lives outside Northern Ireland. “I had to be able to do the exact same thing as the IRA man next to me. Otherwise I wouldn’t be there.”

His allegations that the security services helped to obtain weapons that killed their own members follow revelations about British infiltration of terrorist groups and collusion in paramilitary killings.

The issue has been the subject of investigations by Lord Stevens, the former Metropolitan police commissioner.

Fulton’s book will include claims from his own experience that MI5 and the Special Branch of the Royal Ulster Constabulary colluded in the murder of their own officers and soldiers and allowed agents to be killed.

Fulton, a married Catholic now in his forties, was serving in the army when he was recruited by military intelligence to infiltrate the IRA. He later worked for the Force Research Unit, a covert branch of the Intelligence Corps set up to infiltrate paramilitary groups.

For 13 years Fulton was an IRA terrorist, involved first in courier runs, later as a driver and enforcer, and finally as a master bomb-maker in a unit in Newry, Co Down, credited with numerous advances in explosive technologies. “I was recruited as a serving British soldier,” he said. “I was in the Royal Irish Rangers. I agreed to go into the IRA as a soldier.”

Security sources have said Fulton was implicated in numerous bombings and shootings, allegations on which he declines to comment. He has said his handlers knew the nature of his role but ignored his warnings of forthcoming bomb attacks, including the Omagh atrocity, which killed 29 people in 1998…

“I told my MI5 handlers and they took me to London for two days. The day I came back the bomb went off. The police were taken off the streets to allow the bomber to get in, set the device and get out.”

The trip to America came after the killing of McMurray, when the IRA had built sufficient trust in Fulton for commanders to send him abroad to buy remote control infrared devices that would allow IRA teams to refine the flash technique and detonate explosives from up to a mile away.

When he told his MI5 handlers about the mission, they arranged with the FBI to procure the detonators for Fulton…

A spokesman for the security service declined to comment.

  It sure looks like a likely amateurish atck to me. Most likely these guys were inspired by Jahadis, but had little (probably no) support from a major terrorist group. That car fire was burning pretty vigorously, it likely contained significant amounts of extra fuel in the passenger compartment.
My guess, they planned to drive into the building, and ignite the fuel as they escaped. Presumably something went wrong supposedly there were reported flames before the impact. In any case the prospect of causing mass casualties with such an attack is pretty low.

  The Israeli wall. I normally would be in favor, under the maxim that good fences make good neighbors. The real problem with this wall, is that the West Bank is littered with Israeli settlements, and the wall seeks to include them all. That causes it to snake back and forth, seriously dividing the Palestinian parts of the West Bank. Add to that years of bad behavior by Israeli checkpoint quards, and you have a serious problem.  The only way to have a reasonable fence, is to have a reasonably shaped border. If Israel were to withdraw from the West Bank, an Israel/WestBank wall might be a perfectly reasonable thing to have (assuming it was still needed).
