The CIA’s ‘Family Jewels’

The National Security Archive at George Washington University has posted documents on its website that expose ugly activities by the CIA before reforms were made in the 1970s.  The secrecy watchdog says the agency violated its charter for 25 years by spying on journalists and political dissidents, in addition to engaging in other nefarious activities.

National Security Archive:

The Central Intelligence Agency violated its charter for 25 years until revelations of illegal wiretapping, domestic surveillance, assassination plots, and human experimentation led to official investigations and reforms in the 1970s, according to declassified documents posted today on the Web by the National Security Archive at George Washington University.

CIA director Gen. Michael Hayden announced today that the Agency is declassifying the full 693-page file amassed on CIA’s illegal activities by order of then-CIA director James Schlesinger in 1973—the so-called “family jewels.” Only a few dozen heavily-censored pages of this file have previously been declassified, although multiple Freedom of Information Act requests have been filed over the years for the documents. Gen. Hayden called today’s release “a glimpse of a very different time and a very different Agency.”

“This is the first voluntary CIA declassification of controversial material since George Tenet in 1998 reneged on the 1990s promises of greater openness at the Agency,” commented Thomas Blanton, the Archive’s director.

“JUDGMENT by the wayt is spelled without the “E” - ooo
mighty bullwinkle.”

Actually, Rocky J Squirrel, Judgement is spelled with or without the ‘e’, depending on preference.  The British and Australians use the ‘e’ while most American don’t.  Of course, English was the Brits language first…

did it come 2 anyones’ attention that just maybe the reason as man has put it that I am “SHOUTING” is just
maybe it’s due 2 the fact that I am trying 2 tell all
those who will read WHAT CRIMERS HAVE OCCURRED other then the ones we all hear about everyday in the news.

I do have a firsthand account of WHAT I KNOW & WHAT I
DID & 4 other people who don’t otherwise know shit about any of this - can not in no way - shape or form
TELL ME OTHERWISE.

now like I said jealousy & envy creeps into many if not most peoples’ minds after reading something like this—WHICH BY THE WAY IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

4 people who come here & comment contrary 2 what is known 2 those who research deep enough & is in most cases COMMON KNOWLEDGE located within the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS - 2 me shows ones lack of KNOWING THE TRUTH.

as 4 your disbelief in JUDGMENT DAY - that’s because your name frank is not WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE.

JUDGMENT by the wayt is spelled without the “E” - ooo
mighty bullwinkle.

as 4 you not believing in it - tell that bullshit 2 satan - because that’s what it wants everyone 2 believe.

2 you I guess we’re all some sort of caveman or alien
- or maybe we all evolved from the ape or did we all morph from the creature from the black lagoon.

1 would think that ALL AMERICANS would be on my side
4 what i did - which is keeping life on-going so that
the CONSTITUTION / BILL OF RIGHTS WERE NOT SUSPENDED by rogue members of the america government that unintelligent & uneducated voters constantly elect & re-elect back into office simply by name recognition.

peoples’ lack of knowledge or belief of the truth has
them so clouded to see the light of truth in matters that america is beyond repair.

bush WILL NOT leave office - language in presidential
executive orders makes this point abundantly clear &
only removal by force - his untimely death or where a
TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT defends his nation from all enemies - in this case DOMESTIC - where someone will commit vigilantism by taking the prseident out.

IT WILL NOT BE ME - I DO IT EVERYDAY WITH THE POWER OF PRAYER - & since this matter 6/2004 where oh where
has his presidency gone = DOWN THE FREAKING TUBE.

I only speak of what I know & what I see coming thru the vision the ALL-POWERFUL CREATOR BESTOWS UPON ME -
the creature or the beast has NO VISION…well in a way it does 2 be like its’ CREATOR & destroy everyone
& everything along the way since it can not EVER BE 1
& the same with ELOHIM OR HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.

national-security-4-us, a gentle request.  Ease off on the expletives and the CAPS.

Frank, if you have some intellectual content to add to the dialogue, provide it.  Otherwise, your childish name-calling is not very useful.

Forgive me, national-security-4-us,  I just could not bring myself to read past the first three sentences of your post because it was in ALL CAPS and I find that tedious to slog through.  Typing in all caps is the equivalent of shouting at someone continuously while trying to engage them in a normal conversation. Most people will simply walk away out of annoyance, just as most will simply ignore your posts and blog entries without reading them.  If you have anything of value to say, the inherent merit of your arguments should be evident enough to engage a reader without the use of textual shouting.

Also, when I reached the phrase ‘JUDGEMENT DAY’, it occurred to me that if you actually believe in that sort of mythology then your entire world view is likely tainted by a delusional belief system.

I find it amusing that every time I point out the irrationality of some contrarian blowhard posting a rant here,  the typical responses suggest I must be a Bush supporter (my friends would get a laugh out of that) or that I must be out of touch with reality. Neither could be further from the truth.

Ziploc, you may be right in a sense that I live in my own world, one imbued with logic and reason, and guided by careful consideration rather than hysterical impulse. I owe allegiance to no political party or ideology, and I do not fit neatly into any philosophical category.  My views on all things are are based on my own sense of reason. Based on my experience, both on this board, in greater cyberspace, and in the real world, there are too few people who share this same rational worldview as me.  Even among fellow Mensans I find independent thought all too rare.

What can I say, when it comes to human intelligence, it’s lonely at the top.

I wish this could shock me, but most of it has already been revealed in one form or another. So, why the big hoopla?

On second thought, there are kids out there who don’t know the “checkered” history of CIA. Get the information to them and maybe they’ll educate their parents!

Once upon a time, there was a real debate in congress about whether or not the CIA should be abolished. Now the debate has surfaced again, but not in Congress which seems un-concerned about CIA blowback. A term that first appeared in a classified CIA post-action report on the overthrow of the Iranian government in 1953, carried out in the interests of British Petroleum.

Oh my gosh! Not oil!

Doesn’t it make you feel safe and snugly knowing these guys are out there starting wars to keep “your” oil safe?

In 1963,  Harry S. Truman said,
“For some time I have been disturbed by the way CIA has been diverted from its original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas.”

[In 1947, President Truman created the CIA out of the World War II Office of Strategic Services(OSS).]

“There is something about the way the CIA has been functioning that is casting a shadow over our historic position and I feel that we need to correct it.”

Of course it wasn’t corrected.
But even had it been, something even worse would have come along to replace it.

Oh I forgot, something has ...

The new and improved CIA.

Could it be those who run the agency now, hope this will make us forget about the rotten stuff they daily do under the blanket of their motto ...

“And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”

Kinda gets ya right here, huh?
No here ... in the pit of the stomach.

“Improve the CIA?
Better to abolish it”

I would like to make two points:

1. You people are all idiots.

2. national-security-4-us, did you know that fewer than 20% of Internet users polled will read an entire paragraph that is written in all capital letters, because most people find it an extremely annoying grammatical error which tends to discredit the writer ? By abandoning basic english rules of grammar and typing in all caps, you insure that the majority of people will not read what you have written. Of course, in your case that might be a good thing as it will save them from wasting a considerable amount of time on your unoriginal and semi-hysterical rants.

I’ve been saying coherent shit all the time - it all depends on your ability to understand what I am saying…

what parts of the e-mails sent to waxman & the judiciary don’t you understand…

what part of the terrorists who were caught on 5/29/04 in florida that was covered up so that the constitutionally bound rewards do not have to be paid

what part of this that person i refer to being captured in florida on 5/29/2004 fazul abdullah mohammed was held for 30 months then dumped in somalia to be targeted for assassination to silence him for all that he knows…

what part of f.a.m being under a us federal indictment for the 1998 embassy bombings being let out or let go out of us custody don’t you understand.

what part of the military commissions act don’t you understand - it seems to me that letting terrorists have access to our federal court system could backfire in the peoples’ faces who have in the past or currently assisting terrorists do their dirtywork.

it goes on & on - it is likely that greed - jeaslousy
& envy fills your mind so that your judgment is clouded for you to comprehend anything i say

what part of the o.p.r. letter don’t you understand because o.p.r. sure did & went to investigate only to be denied security clearances…

LIKE I SAID B-4 - UNLESS bush is impeached & imprisoned 4 THEIR CRIMES - PURSUANT TO MANY EXECUTIVE ORDERS OR PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVES SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN & bush will implement martial law & just re-institute it when the 6 months is up.

GET EDUCATED PEOPLE B-4 YOU BECOME ENSLAVED…

http://national-security-4u.blogspot/

http://low_down69.livejournal.com/

http://360.yahoo.com/caspereraser1

CONGRESS WILL NOT EVEN THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATE THESE MATTERS EVEN WHEN I TOLD THEM OF “NSA” - “CIA SECRET PRISONERS TRANSPORTS” - “NSL” ABUSE LONG B-4 ANY OF THESE STORIES WERE EVER RELEASED OR BECAME PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE…

I NEED A CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY TO TAKE MY CASE TO BRING THIS WHOLE HOUSE OF CARDS I MEAN CRIME DOWN…

SO IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING FOR AMERICA - PLEASE FIND ME A CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY TO TAKE MY CASE LIKE
HOW I WENT TO BAT FOR EVERYONE IN 5/2004 SO THAT THE CONSTITUTION /BILL OF RIGHTS WAS NOT SUSPENDED & LIFE
WENT ON…

NOW EVERYONE IS STILL EARNING A PAYCHECK & MONEY THANKS TO ME & YET MY LIFE WAS DECIMATED & DESTROYED
FOR TRYING TO COLLECT CONSTITUTIONALLY BOUND REWARDS
THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GUARANTEED TO BE PAID…

I TELL CONGRESS OF FRAUD - ABUSE - CORRUPTION - LYING
& THE CRIMES THAT WERE COMMITTED & THEY DO NOTHING…

JUST SO YOU KNOW PEOPLE TREASON IS A CRIME PUNISHABLE
BY DEATH—TREASON WAS COMMITTED UPON ME FOR SAVING MY NATION FROM ATTACK BY MOST WANTED TERRORISTS - NOW
IT IS POSSIBLE SOME ROGUE AGENTS IN OUR GOVT. WANTED THEM HERE TO DO JUST THAT…

TREASON WAS ALSO COMMITTED WHEN A (MWT) WHO WAS CAPTURED IN AMERICA - HELD 4 LIKE 30 MONTHS HE LIKELY
DID NOT CRACK OR BREAK IS RELEASED FROM U.S. CUSTODY
WHILE UNDER U.S. FEDERAL INDICTMENT…

SOME VERY SERIOUS FUCKING SHIT - ALL THESE OTHER TRIVIAL MATTERS EXCEPT “911” OF COURSE PALES IN SCOPE
MAGNITUDE & COMPARISON - CRIME-WISE…

NOW UNTIL ROCK SOLID EVIDENCE COMES OUT LIKE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SAYS YES THE FEDERAL GOVT. OR SO & SO DID IT—“911” WILL ALWAYS REMAIN A MYSTERY…EVEN THOUGH I KNOW BETTER…OTHERS DON’T…

so it is no wonder that crimes sky-rocketed GLOBALLY
- monkey-see - monkey do…The only difference is that THE CIA GOT AWAY WITH THEM EVEN WHEN THEY WERE KNOWN AT THE TIME - where ordinary people do not…

“ONLY IN AMERICA” - as it is said…

As for the release of the information that is forth-

While it is always of interest to scholars to gain access to declassified documents, this by no means suggests that the CIA is going to bare all its secrets.

One particularly interesting question entails the assassination of Orlando Lettelier in Washington DC.  Eight weeks before the assassination, on July 26, 1976, George Landau, the Ambassador to Paraguay, sent a cable to the Director of Central Intelligence, George H. W. Bush.  In it, Landau noted that he had received a request by the Paraguayan government to provide U.S. entry visas to two Chilean intelligence officers of the DINA with Paraguayan passports who claimed that they would be meeting with top CIA officials in Washington.  Bush did not send a reply until August 4, at which time he told Landau that the CIA “wanted nothing to do with the mission.”  But by then Landau had already issued the visas.

In “Prelude to Terror,” Joseph Trento places the blame for the delay on Bush’s assistant, Ted Shackley whom he claims “sat on the cable.”  While that is certainly possible, it is also possible that Bush chose to delay sending the reply until he knew the DINA agents were on their way, and then formulated the reply’s content in order to erect a plausible denial.  This latter possibility is enhanced by the fact that the CIA did nothing to stop the DINA agents, who openly entered the country on Aug. 22, even after the Chilean Embassy notified the CIA of the agents’ arrival in Washinton D.C.

[In “Plausible Denial,” Mark Lane, referencing Iran/Contra testimony, noted:  “Bush routinely keeps a diary of plausible deniability, with the same skill employed by a crooked accountant who maintains two sets of corporate books, one of them cooked.”]

During the ensuing Justice Department investigation, Bush failed to turn over CIA files and, per Trento, “defended the DINA against accusations that it conducted the assassination.”  On Sept. 21, 2006 Peter Kornbluh, a senior analyst with the National Security Archive told Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! that in 2000 his organization requested the documentation pertaining to the Lettelier assassination be reclassified.  The investigation was reopened.  Then George W. Bush assumed power.  The documents have never been released.

“Deception is a state of mind and the mind of the State” - James Jesus Angleton, Head of CIA Counter Intelligence 1954-1974

“The Central Intelligence Agency owns anyone of any significance in the major media.” — Former CIA Director William Colby

Colby, we’ll recall, died in a mysterious boating accident…Angleton is loosely portrayed in the DeNiro/Copolla collaborative film production “The Good Shepherd,” a pathetic fellow, whose life shrinks by degrees to almost less than nothing…an allegory perhaps for the republic itself.

What amazes me most is how accepting the average American will be of these “CIA revelations” and not even realize it’s the things they’re not telling you they’ve done and are doing, those are the ones you should be most worried about. We have a government that represents itself and corporate interests, period. We the people haven’t been in the equation for a very long time. Absolute power has corrupted every facet of our government absolutely. No single election is going to change what has taken root and been allowed to grow for over 60 plus years.

I agree with Verne, the only way to take this country back is get out in the streets and do it. We the people, who are supposed to be the watch dogs of our government, have been asleep at the switch. Time to wake the hell up and remind our “leaders” we’re here and they’re the ones who are expendable.

Could it be that the CIA and the Bush and Company are giving us a red herring?  Look, nothing alarms me about his government.  I was around during the sixities and I actually lived next door to a Black Panther member. Back then people fought for their rights and the rights of others.  Fast forward 40 and something years to our current government and where is the outrage, the protest, and the demand for government accountibility? There are a few of us who refuse to bury our heads in the sand and pretend all is well.  Yes, we all want a safer world where respect for man/womankind is viewed with virtures. Isn’t is amazing that the CIA is opening a tiny windowto its past while Cheney nails his shut? Hey, dilusional and being insecure is what the above writer actually was referring too.

I really don’t worry to much about the monitors looking at the little people myself anymore, I know people who monitor surveillance vidoes for a living and apparently the turnover rate is pretty high. It seems it’s one of the most boring jobs imaginable. It must get a little tedious for example reading that yet another bunch of lefty netheads hate Bush.

That said this whole surveillance thing needs to be turned on its head. We need to aim Big Brother’s telescreens the other way. In not so ancient times people relyed on the surveillance of a god to check the abuse of power in society so the idea of ubiquitous constant oversight of the rich and powerful has been around for a long time, we just need to make it real.

We need to think about insecurity in the context of a trickle down theory. I subscribe to the idea that the root causes of the worst insecurity on our planet stems from the self-interested machianations of the senior-most government and corporate officials running it. Their insecurity constantly rains down around us in a steady downpour.

The only way to strengthen and protect our right to privacy and peace of mind is to weaken and eliminate their right to secrecy. Aiming our security measures at the most powerful level of society should hopefully cause honesty and transparency to trickle down through the rest of society, just like wealth is supposed to, except for real. It would also be far more cost effective to monitor a few thousand individuals than it would to monitor a few billion don’t you think?

If there was ever a time or a place for believing your either with us or against us, its for situations like this. You can bet they feel the same way.

I agree with the other posters here. Nothing has changed! In 40 years, they may release documents that have everyone in shock, other than those of us who know the truth. It amazes me that these types of documents continue to surface and still citizens of America accept official stories about 9-11, the WMD’s in Iraq, and so forth. It’s time for Middle America to stand up, get informed, and start doing something about it.

Okay, look, you need to get a grip.  This will be worse than your worst fears and confirm your worst fears.  If you grew up in the 60’s (and were politically active) you will only nod your head in acknoweledgement; sure I already knew that.

Yeah, it’s nice to see it finally acknowledged, but, there is no surprise here.

Now…fast forward 40+ years and this shit is still going on in spades.  40 years and it’s worse than ever.  We have slipped under a fascist regime and didn’t even feel the needle.  Wow!  How did this happen?  You had better ask that question now, because next year it will be too late.

Many of us have railed against this and nobody seems to care…business as usual.  Blog a little and express your rightous indignation and piss and moan, but…don’t get off your collective asses and you will end up like the Germans of WWII.

I submit: If we don’t get off of our collective asses and hit the streets “onmasse”(sp) we will lose everything.  I have said this so many times right here I am getting tired and also wonder why I should care so much about a people who just don’t get it or are too damn lazy and complacent to act!!!
