House Overturns Abortion Aid Ban

The House has voted to lift a ban on aid, including contraception, to family planning clinics and organizations that perform abortions. The measure would still block the direct funding of abortions, but Republicans opposed to the bill say sending condoms to the clinics would give them more resources to perform abortions.

It is difficult to take the “culture of life” seriously when communities that have to cope with AIDS, rampant poverty and an exploding population are denied badly needed protection and contraception.

President Bush is expected to veto the bill.

BBC:

The US House of Representatives has voted to overturn a ban on aid to overseas groups practicing abortion.

The move was approved by 223 votes to 201, but it is unlikely to be signed by President George W Bush.

Earlier this week the White House said he would veto any legislation weakening current federal policies on abortion.

It’s good to see that someone cares about not just the dollar amount of aid going to impoverished people, but also the quality.  My understanding (mainly from the AIDS journalist interview here on truthdig) is the current rules have prevented many American aid organization from working with those in African countries that have a really high risk of certain diseases (such as sex industry workers).
I read recently that since world war 2 $1 trillion dollars has gone in aid to Africa, hopefully in the future we can use our money more wisely and with less political motivation.  Can we achieve the Millennium Development goals such as working to stop the spread of AIDS.

Africa, according to the U.N. Population Control Agency, has warehouses full of condoms and contraceptives paid for by our tax dollars.  Spending more is nothing but lining the pockets of drug companies with our tax dollars.
What gives the American government dominated by rich white men the right to climb into the bedrooms of the Third World anyway?  First they keep meglomaniacs in power that allow them to rape Third World economies and then they use hope they abort all the poor people those governments screw.  Yep, our tax dollars making the world safe for big business.

The republican position against condoms is natural, it’s self-preservation.

I mean, if you had a choice between using a condom, or creating another republican assh*le, which would you choose?
