Italian Prisoners Ask for Death

Posted on May 31, 2007

More than 300 of Italy’s life-sentence prisoners have signed a letter asking the Italian president to reinstate the death penalty and change their sentences.  Italy is one of the world’s leading opponents of execution and even allows prisoners serving life sentences conditional release after years of good behavior. But the inmates who signed the letter seem to feel that life behind bars is not worth living.

BBC:

Hundreds of prisoners serving life sentences in Italy have called on President Giorgio Napolitano to bring back the death penalty.

Their request was published as a letter in the daily newspaper La Repubblica.

Italy has almost 1,300 prisoners serving life terms, of whom 200 have served more than 20 years.

Good. I kinda wish that all the death row inmates in America would do the same.

I would agree with them. If their crimes are so hideous that they must be locked away forever, or most of forever than death would be much kinder.

I believe long sentences are not productive, do not make a bad person good, but dos destroy a good person, who has done bad.

I think we should bring back public whippings instead of locking people up for lesser crimes.

Yes.  This is what punishment is supposed to be like.  It is supposed to make people feel sorry and want to escape.  It is supposed to deter those watching on.  Freedom is supposed to be stripped so completely that death itself begins to look friendly.  But when you don’t give it to them you save yourself the moral question of the death penalty and throw in a high degree of deterrence to boot.

Understand: I am not reveling in these people’s suffering.  I really feel for them and wish I could change things and make it better but this is how things are and they deserve an effective punishment.

This is what prison is *supposed* to be like; not some federally funded ClubMed.  Governments can afford the paltry expense of feeding and housing these criminals in a place that suits them: barest of human requirements without dipping too close to cruel-and-unusual.  (Does being made example of count as c&u?)

I oppose the death penalty because it puts the so-called “power of god” in the hands of the government and the people, two groups which I firmly believe are wholly unworthy the decision of life or death for an individual human.

(I have no idea of the conditions inside the Italian penal system so all this is assuming they the prisoners are being handled humanely.)
