Flamingos
news.yahoo.com

A pair of gay flamingos with a yen for parenthood have adopted an abandoned baby chick at a nature preserve in Britain. Homosexuality is not uncommon among flamingos, and males are able to produce a type of milk for chicks. Fernando and Carlos have been mates for six years.

AFP via Yahoo!:

Carlos and Fernando had been desperate to start a family, even chasing other flamingos from their nests to take over their eggs at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge near Bristol.

But their egg-sitting prowess made them the top choice for taking an unhatched egg under their wings when one of the Greater Flamingo nests was abandoned.

The couple, together for six years, can feed chicks by producing milk in their throats.

I am a liberal Christian who is working toward her
degree in psychology. Whatever beliefs we hold as
people, we need to understand that we can only hold
ourselves to those beliefs. I can’t think of one time
in scripture that Jesus showed a “hateful” attitude
towards anyone except for the Pharisees. You know
why? Because they were pompous bigots that stood
around all day with false piety judging their
neighbors instead of loving them….which by the way
is the “second commandment” that Jesus gives. Love
your neighbor and you are like Jesus in a very
important way.

there is no proof jesus even existed. as well as there were others that were worshipped hundreds of years before christianity that had -
looks like those who invented christainity were plagerists.

-was born on December 25th.
-was considered a great traveling teacher and master.
-had 12 companions or disciples.
-performed miracles.
-was buried in a tomb.
-after three days he rose again.
-his resurrection was celebrated every year.
-was called “the Good Shepherd.”
-was considered “the Way, the Truth and the Light, the Redeemer, the Savior, the Messiah.”
-was identified with both the Lion and the Lamb.
-his sacred day was Sunday, “the Lord’s Day,”.
-he had his principal festival on what was later to become Easter, at which time he was resurrected.
-his religion had a Eucharist or “Lord’s Supper.”

If you guessed Jesus Christ, well, YOU’D BE WRONG!! HE WAS… MITHRA, a Roman-Persian God who existed hundreds of years before Christ.

(“He who will not eat of my body and drink of my blood, so that he will be made on with me and I with him, the same shall not know salvation.” This inscription to Mithras, which parallels John 6:53-54, is inside the Vatican in the tomb of Saint Peter.)

there is not one shred of evidence anywhere outside the bible ,that hasn’t been proven a fake , that jesus existed. nor were any of the writers of the NT around when jesus was supposed to have lived.

lol.

lefty, you say this but in your heart you know this is not true. You know he exists, you know that he has instilled a sense of right and wrong within you. that guilt you feel every time you denounce him…

I am a former die hard atheist so any argument you produce will be futile. Save your time unless you have some earth shattering revelations never before revealed.

If you seek further intellectually stimulating reading on Gods existence from another skeptic, look no further than C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity.

When you feel you have risen to a level capable of debating this work, come back and let me know.

Until then, may God be with you, may he pour his countenance upon you and be gracious to you.

Do not you yourself attack others b/c their life or view of life opposes your own?  Are you not, yourself, allowing your ideas to attack others when you possess no wisdom of their knowledge?  You speak of wisdom & ignorance.  What knowledge do you have?  Your ‘knowledge’ comes from a book written via hearsay by men in an archaic age.  What of tolerance and acceptance and love…all of what Jesus taught us?  Jesus did not writethe bible, human beings playing ‘telephone’ wrote it.  What Jesus had in mind is nothing of what sad happening has occured in his name.  Jesus was shooting for a bigger picture (love), undefined & unconditional.

The American Medical Asso. has ‘come out’-being gay is a normal human trait.
Also the American Asso. of Psychiatry and Psychology.

People are born with these traits.  If you are born heterosexual (90%) then nothing will ‘make you gay’.

If you are born homosexual, then nothing can make you straight, ask Ted Haggard how thats going.  10% of the population of humans is going to be gay, whether you like it or not.

Yes, there is science to back this up.

Gay people have made enormous contributions to society throughout history as leaders (Abraham Lincoln), warriors, artists, doctors, writers, philosophers, etc. etc. etc.

Just like everyone else, no matter what the bigots may think.

It is unfortunate that you cannot see the hypocrisy of your own comments.

The free flow of ideas, thoughts and perspectives is stifled here. You preach “acceptance” and “tolerance” but this is only for those things that you agree with.  Should someone disagree and propose another view, you attack them and attempt to do it on the basis of some wisdom you proclaim to have.  What wisdom do you have? What knowledge do you think you posses that blinds you of your own ignorance?

True wisdom could only come from God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The God who NEVER told Abraham to commit the acts stated. Try reading it before commenting on it.

I hope you seek truth. It has nothing to hide from and is able to withstand your scrutiny. People much more intelligent than you have traveled this road but regardless of whom you are it all come down to choice. A choice you have to make as well. A choice for right or wrong.
Consider for a moment where the concept of right and wrong comes from….

To Mike Mid-City…

We’re getting off topic… supposed to be talking about gay flamingos… but I mean, just how long can you beat those flighty birds?

Just a note about Jesus - even as a non-believer I can appreciate that the advice attributed to him, sorry, Him, is, for the most part, very sound advice. But good grief fella… we humans were around for thousands of years before He allegedly walked this soil. From what I can see, your Jesus just RESTATED THE OBVIOUS - nothing new - just hyped it up - repackaged it - and sold it to a few followers who stumbled around with the ball for centuries. It was a passing fad at the time but a few hundred years later, like the underground fires that are slowly consuming some town in Appalachia, the smoldering Christianity embers flickered into flame and have been consuming the passions of the susceptible ever since.

And, To archeon of thrace…

PLEASE don’t legitimize Phelps by assigning him the title of Reverend. He’s nothing but a low-life hate-monger who has a knack for attracting simple-minded misfits even more desperate for a “life” than he is.

AND FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE, PLEASE don’t insinuate he might be GAY. If Christians are OK with him running around dragging their name in the mud, that’s their business. But, as a gay man, I would be horrified to learn he is homosexual. We’ve got enough of an image problem without having an odious moron like Phelps crawling around in the closet!

With a super human effort we can not breath, not drink, not eat, and I bet if I tryed hard enough I could stop my heart from beating too - but just because I can overpower my biology doesn’t mean I have too.

If it is OK for the dishonourable Rev. Phelps to say “god hates _____ (insert thing, person, group, country of choice here)”, I can say I hate Rev. Phelps.  I have a sneaking suspicion that he has repressed homo-erotic feelings, and actually hates himself.  I would not be surprised to hear that he abuses little boys.  But then again I suspected Falwell did too.  I have always wondered what goes on on those christian retreats….......?

The more I think about it… actually “feel” about it… the more I tend to agree. While I guess, with some sort of superhuman effort, it is possible not to give expression to one’s sexual urges, but I think the urge is even more powerful than the urge to eat. When you’re HUNGRY, you’re hungry. And if you get hungry enough you’ll “eat” almost anything!

Only the self-righteous sex-o-phobes like to preach abstinence as the answer. I’ll bet my last condom they’re preaching their song while on their knees sneaking around behind everyone’s back getting their “urges” looked after.

And to Mike Mid-City…

You keep up this clear-headed, non-judgmental, intelligent thinking and you’re ALMOST going to make me go easy on the “believers” in this world.

I agree with you that “love is the answer” and it seems that precious few “Christians” have even the foggiest notion of what love is all about.

The (late)Falwells, Robertsons, and that “God Hates Fags” despicable excuse for a human being, Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church, seem to know is ANTI EVERYTHING. Too bad there aren’t more of your type of Christian around to stuff a sock in the mouths of these hypocrites, because they’re sure dragging your religion deeper into the much with every word they utter.

All that said, while you and I agree on some aspects of our existence, we’re watching two different movies about the existence of God and religions in general. But I respect “believers” who understand it is THEIR belief and that they have no right to expect or even hint that everyone else SHOULD believe as they do.

What people miss in the homo-hetro debate is the central and most important fact: Humans are sexual beings.  Our sex drive is driven almost entirely by hormons.  We have little or no control over our sexual choices.  We live with the delusion that we can chose to have or not have the sex that turns us on.  We cannot.  This is why even in sexually represive societies infidelity, premarital sex, masterbation, etc are as pervasive as in permisive societies.  We are who we are because of our biology.  No one choses homo-sexuality, just like no-one choses heterosexuality.  I would say that if we were all honest about the secret sexual fantasy life we never share with anyone, that we are ALL to some extent bi-sexual (or simply “sexual”) with our preferences lying within a spectrum of sexual possiblilities.

If homo-sexuality occurs in nature, it is by definition “natural”.  But then again so is killing and cannibalism (oh right humans do those too).

I doubt these ignorant bigots will ever do research of their own to learn that homosexuality is indeed at least partially biological in its roots.

Just one thing; those things you said that god “state specifically for us not to do it. Just as adultry, murder, addiction, hate etc. etc.” are things which god himself ordered his most loved personalities (Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon and others) to commit. He told Abraham to lie about his wife and prostitude her, he told Moses and David to murder thousands just b/c they’re there, and blessed Solomon as the wisest king for being the first porn star.

Homosexuality is not the same thing as murder, drug addiction, hate..etc, ect.  we are not ‘all in agreement’ that homosexuality is a choice.  The only choice gays and lesbians get to make is to come out of the closet into a backwards thinking world where they face harassment and ridicule.  Doesn’t seem like a great ‘choice’ to be ostracized by whole bunch of people who have an archaic logic set up by few really old books.

“I think we are in agreement that homosexuality is a choice.”

rowman, either you’ve accidentally misunderstood what I posted or you are being deliberately and obtusely argumentative. Either way, I want to make it VERY CLEAR - we are NOT in agreement.

Homosexuality is no more a “choice” than is heterosexuality. Humans come in all sorts of variations over which they have no control. Sure, one can CHOOSE NOT TO PRACTISE one’s sexuality… but doing so is called ABSTINENCE - “the ONLY TRUE PERVERSION” as Nietzsche wrote. When all the heterosexuals stop practising sex, then, I suppose it would be reasonable to expect all non-heterosexuals to stop as well. What nonsense.

“I do disagree though and believe that an individual does have control over “what” he or she is.”

You can “believe” whatever you want. That is what the word CHOICE means. YOU GET TO DECIDE. But “believing” what AIN’T SO is just plain silly - it’s what ignorant fools do so well.

“I choose not to practice homosexuality…”. GOOD FOR YOU. Perhaps you suffer from your CHOICE of HETEROsexuality which would explain why it is easy for you to CHOOSE not to practise homosexuality. If you are heterosexual, try NOT PRACTISING HETEROSEXUALITY. Once you succeed at that, let me know. We’ll writeyou up for the Guinness Book.

“The biblical majority cite scripture…”. I guess it’s your habit to just MAKE THINGS UP and post them as FACT, right? Out of the 6+ BILLION people on this planet only a SMALL fraction have even HEARD of your bible, let alone read it, understand it, or accept it as anything more than what it is - a mish-mash of some good advice, some great poetry, and a whole boatload of wishful thinking, semi-accurate and fictional historical records, mythologies and utter bloody nonsense.

“Believers” as you seem to be are a SMALL MINORITY on this planet. Get over it.

Make your CHOICES for yourself… no problem. WHEN YOU TRY TO MAKE CHOICES FOR OTHERS… BIG PROBLEM.

RAE..
I think we are in agreement that homosexuality is a choice. I do disagree though and believe that an individual does have control over “what” he or she is. I choose not to practice homosexuality just as I choose not to practice murder or drug addiction etc. I have control over those things thus choose the outcome.

The biblical majority cite scripture as the main reason why poeple should not practice homosexual acts. Anyone who has expensed time learning about this could only draw one conclusion. Sure there are those who try to distort the text but it is what it is. God instructs us to not do it. Clearly there is a tendancy otherwise He would not state specifically for us not to do it. Just as adultry, murder, addiction, hate etc. etc.

“Since even animals can become homosexual, than it would hold true that people are born gay or straight, then where is the hate against gays?.”

Oh, Margaret, you must be a newbie! This question has been asked for decades by sensible, mature people everywhere.

BTW, we “animals” don’t “become” homosexual or heterosexual - we ARE homosexual or heterosexual (or a whole lot of stopping places along the continuum between the two).

We “animals” don’t get to choose our eye color, skin color, height, left or right handedness, or any of dozens of other characteristics that distinquish one human from another.

But it doesn’t matter whether any one individual has any control over what he or she IS. For some unfathomable reason the uneducated, ignorant, and feeble-minded among the “majority” are scared witless of anything DIFFERENT from themselves. It’s a flaw in the human character to FEAR what you don’t understand. Mixed with the other major flaw of being TERRIFIED of being considered different by your peers, and you have the idiotic mix that fosters the “hatred” you mention.

I guess it’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Wave it, and he charges. I don’t think he even knows WHY he charges… he just does. Some sort of genetic prejudice against red flags, I suppose.

A better question to ask, I think, is IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND SOMETHING, WHY NOT LEARN ABOUT IT before acting dangerously or at least, sounding really ignorant? I guess, for many, “learning” is just too damn much work… it’s easier to hate. And for many, it seems, being IGNORANT is considered, as Martha would say, “a good thing.”

Margaret, the authors selection and formation of this story may cause you to infer such, but this is not the case. Homosapien’s are congnisant of their sexual acts and may choose to be gay or straight. Nothing prevents a gay man from having straight sex or a straight man from having gay sex. Its preference, not instinctive.

But I’ll bet once this news hits the streets they’ll all be gone by tomorrow morning!
