Two ABC Journalists Slain in Baghdad

Two more members of the news media have sacrificed their lives covering the Iraq war.  Cameraman Alaa Uldeen Aziz and sound technician Saif Laith Yousuf, both Iraqi journalists working for ABC in Baghdad, were abducted Thursday and found dead at the city morgue Friday, according to an ABC executive.

Los Angeles Times:

The attack stunned Baghdad’s journalists.

One Iraqi reporter for a Western media organization said Aziz’s death had convinced him he should leave the country for good.

“I don’t want to stay here anymore. Every day we are losing people we know. One day it will reach me, or one of my colleagues,” said the reporter, who requested anonymity to avoid trouble with his employer.

Last week, the Interior Ministry banned journalists from going to the sites of bombings and other attacks.

Iraqi journalists are worried about being intimidated by political parties, attacked by armed groups or arrested by the U.S. military, which might suspect them of involvement with insurgent groups.

The “ABC journalists” being Iraqi citizens is not coincidental.

American journalists are in such danger they don’t dare go on the streets of Baghdad, so they take advantage of the high unemployment in Baghdad by giving jobs to Iraqis. The Americans cover stories from their hotels and embeds.

This is not a problem. It has been determined that an Iraqi life is worth only $2,000 (vs $1,800,000 for an American who died in 9/11.)

I realise I’m paranoid, but when I heard about this deliberate execution, what it brought to mind was the Iraqi puppet government’s restriction on journos covering bombing scenes, and the number of reporters who have been killed during the occupation. Who gave this death squad its orders? Was it the puppet government, acting at the behest of the U.S. government? What better way to suppress bad news than firing a shot across the brow (pun intended) of the people who would bring the bad news to a TV screen near you? If enough reporters for American media are killed, there will NEVER be any bad news in American media!

I fear that when the full truth of the atrocities in Iraq is known, we will find that the U.S. and its lackeys have been behind much of the death squad killings, just as they were in Central America during the reign of Reagan and Bush the First. What better way to kill your enemies than to enlist their countrymen to pull the triggers instead of U.S. soldiers?
