The Australian military says it intends to kill some 3,000 kangaroos, citing a population boom that threatens several endangered species.

Los Angeles Times:

Animal rights activists decried the proposal.

The department said the 6,500 kangaroos at two sites outside Canberra were destroying the habitat of the grassland earless dragon, striped legless lizard and golden sun moth.

I am an Australian and this is a lot of uninformed gibberish. 1. There are literally millions of kangaroos in Australia so culling a few thousand is not going to make much difference to their population. 2. Kangaroo is a reasonable tasting meat (not fabulous from the little I have eaten) but it is much harder to harvest as the wild population has a significant parasite problem no one wants in their food supply and until that is addressed it will remain a fringe food source.
3. The Howard government are a bunch of losers but this is not one of their sins. Ignoring climate change however is.

Kangaroo meat is supposed to be delicious! It’s only thanks to mammal loving weenies that Kangaroo meat is not legal to import into the United States for human consumption.

Let in the Kangaroos and allow for savory consumption of this fine, tasty game!

Just send the imbecile-in-chief and cheney over to hunt for them…someone’s bound to get shot in the face.

I’d bet money they wouldn’t shoot Koala bears like that. They’re way too cute and the outrage would be deafening.

Just in case the Australian military needs more Kangaroos we just send them Bush/Cheney and all of their Whore House staff and cabinet members. When doing so we save lot of money for cleaning and clearing house.

One wildlife biologist suggested that instead of raising sheep and cattle, especially now that large parts of Australia are experiencing drought, that they eat kangaroo instead. He says he got the idea when, during TV clips of farmers with drought-stricken cattle, kangaroos were bounding around in the background as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

Kargaroo is also supposed to be quite delicious, but I don’t know whether it tastes like chicken or not.

You can take the “destroying the habitat of the grassland earless dragon, striped legless lizard and golden sun moth” rationale with the same kind of credulity you might a Bush Regime justification of the aggression in Iraq. To kill some 3000 kangaroos when one might take the simple step of trapping and relocating them would be nothing if not the most egregious atrocity. One wonders if the Australian government is trying to distinguish itself as the world’s most blood thirsty government entity, second only perhaps to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or the State of Texas where, respectively, deer murder and the execution of human beings have become almost ritualistic public enthusiasms. Better that we trap and relocate the human beings willing to carry out such an assignment.

More likely the government is providing a lucrative contract to a meat processing contributor. I noticed kangaroo meat is now offered as premium dog food and I imagine there are other markets for the meat being developed as well. Kangaroos are then the next fodder for the destructive machinery of slaughter and pillaging in order to make a fast buck.

There is a drought there, too, thus 1,000’s more will perish anyway. But, then, it was typical of the Australian government to cite damage to endangered species even to banning constructing wind-powered electricity generators until recently in case a parrot got knocked down. So much for caring about mammals!
