A delegation of 11 moderate House Republicans visited the White House on Tuesday to warn the president that he risks losing more support from his party if conditions in Iraq do not improve by fall.

The lawmakers lamented dwindling support for the war among their constituencies during the meeting, which was described as “no-holds-barred.”

New York Times:

WASHINGTON, May 9—Moderate Republicans gave President Bush a blunt warning on his Iraq policy at a private White House meeting this week, telling the president that conditions needed to improve markedly by fall or more Republicans would desert him on the war.

The White House session demonstrated the grave unease many Republicans are feeling about the war, even as they continue to stand with the president against Democratic efforts to force a withdrawal of forces through a spending measure that has been a flash point for weeks.

Participants in the Tuesday meeting between Mr. Bush, senior administration officials and 11 members of a moderate bloc of House Republicans said the lawmakers were unusually candid with the president, telling him that public support for the war was crumbling in their swing districts.

IMPEACHMENT should be Plan B, it’s unfortunately past being Plan A - what the Dem co-conspirators are waiting for I have no idea. Want to support the troops - get them the hell out of where they’ll be killed, anything less is bullsh*t.

Those republicans who were not up for re-election in 06 will be in 08. Democrats not fullfilling the voters desire to get out of Iraq should be wary too.

Except for those senators and congressmen with a constituancy heavily involved in the military equipment manufacturing base,(one of the few manufacturing bases not outsourced) the remainder of the “Bush” league will be prepared to “jump ship” soon.

Edwards has a point in his commercials, keep sending the Iraq funding bill back, eventually the congress will override his veto and proceed with HR333.

The commander guy will only do what HE wants to do - period. And we all know what that is, keeping the meat grinder fed with fresh meat. USDA!

He’s gotten his way his entire miserable life, so why does anyone think he’s going to change now?

My God, he was involved with 9/11, so why would he care about these people dying? Just more meat.

The bottom line here is that President Bush told these lawmakers, in so many words, that he would not leave Iraq during his presidency.  George Bush is in extreme denial, and is causing more American blood to be spilled needlessly every day.  The only thing driving Bush is somehow saving his legacy; and he thinks he can do it by miracuously achieving a “victory” in Iraq.  But he’s deluding himself; that train has already left the station, both in terms of “victory”, and in terms of avoiding being rated by future historians as being the worst president in American history.

Many more people, including Republicans in Congress, seem to be seeing the invasion and occupation of Iraq in a more realistic light.

There are obviously many ramifications of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, some explored in:

Can anyone imagine something like this happening if the democrats weren’t back in charge of Congress? There would be NO checks or balances by the republicans since they rubber-stamped everything that the president did.

Isn’t it ridiculous that republicans are willing to wait (again) until the latest general-in-charge, who works for Bush, reports on the success of the purge (excuse me, the surge)? Generals fight - not make policy decisions. And, of course, will the general dare to challenge this administration his boss? Of course not - unless he retires first! That seems to be the courageous pattern of those who disagree - don’t make waves while you still hold a position in this administration - wait til you retire and then writea book complaining about not being heard? Not being heard - was there anything to hear?

How many more attempts will be make to get Bush off the hook for his irresponsible rushing to one-up his daddy?

And sending Cheney to deal with the Arabs - ridiculous, the most mistrusted man in America in the country to represent US interests?
