Sen. Russ Feingold, Majority Leader Harry Reid and eight other Senate Democrats have decided to respond to Bush’s veto with an amendment that would halt war funding if troops were not safely withdrawn from Iraq by March 31, 2008. Exceptions would include operations against terrorist organizations, training for Iraqi soldiers and protection of U.S. infrastructure and personnel.
The Feingold-Reid bill (via the Brad Blog):
(a) Transition of Mission - The President shall promptly transition the mission of United States forces in Iraq to the limited purposes set forth in subsection (d).
(b) Commencement of Safe, Phased Redeployment from Iraq - The President shall commence the safe, phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq that are not essential to the purposes set forth in subsection (d). Such redeployment shall begin not later than 120 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.
(c) Prohibition on Use of Funds - No funds appropriated or otherwise made available under any provision of law may be obligated or expended to continue the deployment in Iraq of members of the United States Armed Forces after March 31, 2008.
(d) Exception for Limited Purposes - The prohibition under subsection (c) shall not apply to the obligation or expenditure of funds for the limited purposes as follows:
(1) To conduct targeted operations, limited in duration and scope, against members of al Qaeda and other international terrorist organizations.
(2) To provide security for United States infrastructure and personnel.
(3) To train and equip Iraqi security services.

Yes impeachment might cause a downward dip in the stock market, but the stock market will recover. George Bush and Dick Cheney have shown that their words can not be trusted. Backed into a corner they will seemingly agree to be reasonable and talk about co-operation, although they sometimes contradict themselves during the course of their seeming declaration of bipartisonship. Certainly shortly after they make the bipartisonship declaration they immediately announce appointments or declared intentions that are opposed to what the public wants, the constitution requires and common sense dictates. Not to impeach Bush/Cheney and remove the creatures they have appointed to high position is to insure a dim future for this country and the death of our Constitution as a functioning guide to a civil society.

That wording is so vague that we could, theoretically, all still stay here.

Not perfect, but hey ...
Remember, the really great thing about this is they haven’t simply rolled over and given Bush what he wants!
THOSE PHONE CALLS ARE PAYING OFF!
DON’T STOP!
KEEP ON PHONING!
Even if your rep/senator is republican, and you’d rather chew worms than call their office, do it! You are a constituent and have a perfect right to expect them to respond to a few hundred, [thousand maybe?] phone calls.
When they answer, identify yourself, and where you live. I usually give my phone number too. They don’t expect that information without asking for it, so it sends a clear message that you are serious and they’ll pay attention to what you say. Just try to stay cool and make your point.
Keep calling! Call every day. After a while you’ll be talking to that voice on the phone like an old friend. You might be surprised at their sympathy with your position. You might even be surprised to get a follow-up email.
Go ahead, phone. Then do it again ... and again ... every single day!

You’ll find numbers for their local offices as well, if you cant afford long distance.
Go ahead, make that phone call.
You’ll feel so much better after you do. Good enough to look forward to the next phone call tomorrow.
Gosh! Almost forgot a VERY IMPORTANT thing!
If you are as lucky as me and your Senators and Congress-person have already shown by their votes they support your position THANK THEM! Tell that voice on the phone how much you appreciate that. Let them know you are paying attention!
Remember that 20% on the other side is phoning them too. Make sure they know how much you appreciate their efforts!

Yet still no word from truthdig about the hidden gem within this bill. Read the bill and you will find a caveat for the privatization of Iraqi oil resources. So, truthdig, are you journalists or operatives? You mock what you become.
