Australian Held at Gitmo Will Be Tried in U.S. CourtPosted on Mar 1, 2007
An Australian imprisoned at Guatanamo Bay for the last five years will be the first Gitmo prisoner to be tried under a new U.S. law authorizing special military trials of alleged enemy combatants. An initial hearing will be held within the month for 31-year-old David Hicks, accused of helping the Taliban combat American troops in Afghanistan.

The Bush Crime Family would have been content to let Hicks rot in prison without charges or even a kangaroo court trial forever, except that Hicks’ cause has become a big issue here and threatens the chances of Crime Minister Howard in this year’s Commonwealth elections. The fact that they start show trial proceedings in an Australian election year is further proof that this is all a political game.
