TopTech news:

New York Senator Carl Kruger’s proposal to ban gadget use on the streets of major New York cities is based on the notion that he calls “iPod oblivion,” which Kruger says leads to the kind of detachment from the real world that has gotten people killed. Should Kruger’s “iPod oblivion” bill become law, pedestrians caught using any kind of electronic device while crossing a street would be hit with a $100 fine.

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

Why is it that once anyone is elected to an office above dog catcher they immediately assume they’ve been commissioned to oversee and control virtually every aspect of our lives?

I’m fed up to the teeth with do-gooder busybodies who have nothing better to do than snoop around looking for a token idiot act around which s/he can build a reputation. It’s sure a feather in their cap to come up with a LAW with their name on it that actually passes and is of more use than it is a pain in the ass!

Anyone old enough to be on the street by themselves and stupid enough to be crossing a busy street while operating a phone, ipod, GPS or any other damn fool toy of the times, DESERVES EXACTLY WHAT HE/SHE GETS. The poor schmuk that bowls them over doesn’t, of course, deserve the trauma… but it’s a civic duty to rid us of these fools - it’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it!

LEGISLATORS AROUND THE WORLD…HEAR THIS!

BUTT THE HELL OUT OF OUR LIVES!

Thank you.

This is ridiculous. They should ban the drivers running over pedestrians!
