Defense Secretary: Surge Not Our ‘Last Chance’Posted on Feb 7, 2007
Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that if the surge goes badly, the military will probably move troops “out of harm’s way.” Why wait? He also said the surge is not the “last chance” to get it right in Iraq. Let’s hope Congress stops quibbling and makes him wrong.

No worries, if the escalation- er, surge, doesn’t work, rest assured the administration will find new and inventive ways of sending American soldiers to die in Iraq for absolutely nothing.
There is nothing to “win” in Iraq. There never was. This is about not having to admit they were wrong, not having to admit they lied, manipulated intelligence to get the war they wanted so badly. They simply want the war to drag on until Bush can get out of office, since then it will all just “go away” for them. If it takes another 3,000 dead American troops to cover their asses for another two years, they will consider that a bargain.
