Three leaders
Vanity Fair

His nuclear ambitions make Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (left) a threat. But attacking Iran—as former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right) has urged—could be Bush’s biggest blunder yet.

In the new issue of Vanity Fair, experts in and out of the government report that the groundwork for a war against Iran has already been set. “I’ve heard from sources at the Pentagon that their impression is that the White House has made a decision that war is going to happen,” a former CIA counter-terrorism specialist tells the mag.

  • Related: Check out a video of Bush’s disturbing Iraq-Iran parallels

  • Vanity Fair:

“It is absolutely parallel,” says Philip Giraldi, a former C.I.A. counterterrorism specialist. “They’re using the same dance steps—demonize the bad guys, the pretext of diplomacy, keep out of negotiations, use proxies. It is Iraq redux.”

Based on many reports in the press, some referencing inside information from military and intelligence personnel, it looks like Bush and Cheney plan to attack Iran…soon.

The article referenced below looks at some of the factors involved:

Will Bush, Cheney attack Iran? When and why?

“Maybe Americans need to emulate the French and take to the streets.  Our futures and our lives may depend on it.”

    Lora,
You don’t know how many times I’ve said that.

I think we are beaten down in sprit, and just accept things as they are. Many just tune out and figure there’s no point. Others avoid the news the details of the daily soap opera is out of their realm. That’s why so many are ignorant of the world around them.

No now’s not the time to stand by and watch.

All I can say is encourage those around you to register and vote. I do my family and friends and went out of my way to explain how easy it is to register. And the steps you take to do it.

Lets hold the democratic party responsible to exercise their power, even if unsuccessful. I hope I don’t hear Harry Reid whining that if they took action Bush would just veto it (as I did today) Let him veto….let him justify his actions. Don’t give up because you feel it’s a lost cause. Let Bush defend his insanity don’t roll over and play dead.

And to heck with Sen. Lieberman, force his hand too.
Best way to assure the end of his future in our state. He was elected by mostly Republicans, along with a smaller group of Democrats (many inner city) which are loyal to him, as they find him personable, but they have no clue of his voting record over the years. They think he’s a democrat and their champion.

A break would finally cross the radar screen of so many news ignorant. And open many eyes.

The democratic support , the small margin which gave him victory , were non-college educated and most were poor inner city voters. I wonder if they were aware of his role in making the bankruptcy laws more favorable to the bankers? I doubt it.

Yes, it’s all been in print for more than ten years, authored by the same neocons who now manage Bush. And with the Congress intimidated by the Israel pacs and lobbys, the plans are being carried out to the letter, by us, for Israel’s benefit.

It’s people you will never hear about within the Military Industrial Complex who are the real decision makers here. The options are being slanted by the beaurocracy to obtain yet another battlefield and a proving ground for the next generation of weapons now in development.

The U.S. Department of Defense, headquartered in the Pentagon, is one of the most massive organizations on the planet, with net annual operating costs of $635 billion, assets worth $1.3 trillion, liabilities of $1.9 trillion and more that 2.9 million military and civilian personnel as of fiscal year 2005.

I am a 2 tour Vietnam Veteran who recently retired after 36 years of working in the Defense Industrial Complex on many of the weapons systems being used by our forces as we speak.

It is difficult to convey the complexity of the way DOD works to someone who has not experienced it. This is a massive machine with so many departments and so much beaurocracy that no president, including Bush totally understands it.

Presidents, Congressmen, Cabinet Members and Appointees project a knowledgeable demeanor but they are spouting what they are told by career people who never go away and who train their replacements carefully. These are military and civil servants with enormous collective power, armed with the Federal Acquisition Regulation, Defense Industrial Security Manuals, compartmentalized classification structures and “Rice Bowls” which are never mixed.

Our society has slowly given this power structure its momentum which is constant and extraordinarily tough to bend. The cost to the average American is exhorbitant in terms of real dollars and bad decisions. Every major power structure member in the Pentagon’s many Washington Offices and Field locations in the US and Overseas has a counterpart in Defense Industry Corporate America. That collective body has undergone major consolidation in the last 10 years.

What used to be a broad base of competitive firms is now a few huge monoliths, such as Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and Boeing.

Government oversight committees are carefully stroked. Sam Nunn and others who were around for years in military and policy oversight roles have been cajoled, given into on occasion but kept in the dark about the real status of things until it is too late to do anything but what the establishment wants. This still continues - with increasing high technology and potential for abuse.

Evil is a convergence of traits often found in humans: fear, paranoia, hubris, self-loathing, self-righteousness & self-interest coupled with chance.  The opportunity to exploit the masses for the evil doers own paranoia, hubris, self-righteousness & self-interest is the spark that can light the fuse of oppression & pre-emptive war.  This opportunity will not spark the evil doers to negotiate, compromise or reflect on what is real, but propels them to reflect on their own beliefs in lieu of facts, empathy & reason.  All those who oppose the evil doers are easily associated with perceived enemies: the other.  With foes and allies aligned, and the blessings of their own beliefs, the evil doers feel sanctified in using distractions, distortions & false pretenses to justify their own paranoia, hubris, self-righteousness & self-interest and actions.

When people are fearful, ignorant, arrogant, concerned only with their own lives and not the lives of others or more correctly, the other, they are susceptible to evil.  It may be naïve to believe that we humans are above doing evil things, but when we are convinced that what we are doing is right, or better yet righteous, humans can do very imaginable things like genocide.  We concentrate on the great figures who proposed calamity, but it is ourselves who should be scrutinized.  Without constituents those great figures tagged as evil monsters: Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot et al. would only be fringe lunatics screaming on a soap box: their constituents’ fear, ignorance, arrogance & self-indulgence is the fuse.

Will we allow ourselves to be the fuse of pre-emption once again or will we come to grips with the evil that is within us all: Christian, Muslim, Jew, atheist, human.

    Forget about “peace” rallies.

What we need is IMPEACHMENT rallies.

Huge, loud, numerous, frequent, and very unpleasant ones - and not in Washington DC on Saturday mornings, politely promenading past empty office buildings.

I am incredulous that anyone still complains about Bush and the Neo-Cons. The debate is over. What looks like a debate is manufactured by articles like this. They only serve as a diversion for what is actually going on. Read between the lines.

Questions that should be asked by reporters and hammered at until they get some answers at this point are:

Just what agreements have been put in place with the other Great Powers in the event of a regional war in the Middle East?

What agreements have been Sunni Dominated Regional Powers? Especially those in the Gulf.

What are the contingency plans for energy supplies in case of a war in the Middle East?

Why waste all that time investigating an article about Bush wanting to go to War with Iran. God, this was fait acompli five years ago.

    What is going on now?

“I love pedestrian articles like this one.”

    An ignorant point of view.
It is the mass media aspect of Vanity Fair that gives this article importance.
If only it could be published in People Magazine.
That’s the problem - and why the Vanity Fair article is so important. Most Americans watch “Entertainment Tonight” and not Democracy Now or Truthdig nor The Nation.

I was a history major and in college I remember professors saying that leaders like Hitler and Stalin were insane.  In light of this historical framework, I guess we’d have to say the same thing about Bush, Cheney and the neocons—they’re insane.  Insantiy defined in my dictionary: extreme folly or unresonableness.  Our war with Iraq fits that definition but an extreme case would be going to war with Iran.

Maybe Americans need to emulate the French and take to the streets.  Our futures and our lives may depend on it.

I love pedestrian articles like this one.  They paste together a whole bunch of things that happened over the last 5 years, get a couple of quotes and are passed off as insightful.

A regional war in the ME is now unavoidable for a number of reasons, not the least of which being the demented neo-con view of the world and the pre-enlightenment ideas of most of the Middle East. But everyone knows all this.

I think they would spend their time better telling us what is going on now.  That being: what are the exact negotiations between the 5 permanent Security Council members and other interested parties, ie. Germany, India, Japan over the division of the spoils once the inevitable war comes.

I guess we will have to wait for another five years or so for another one of these pieces to describe what is going on now.
