Molly Ivins died today at the age of 62. As a veteran journalist and columnist, Molly’s sharp tongue and stubborn determination to cut through the bull and fight for what’s right touched the lives of millions. America is poorer for her absence.

You can read some of Molly Ivins’ indomitable wit here.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

A California native who moved to Houston as a young child with her family, Ms. Ivins was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. Two years later after enduring a radical mastectomy and rounds of chemotherapy, Ms. Ivins was given a 70 percent chance of remaining cancer-free for five years. At the time, she said she liked the odds.

But the cancer recurred in 2003, and again last year. In recent weeks, she had suspended her twice-weekly syndicated column, allowing guest writers to use the space while she underwent further treatment. She made a brief return to writing in mid-January, urging readers to resist President Bush’s plan to increase the number of U.S. troops deployed to Iraq. She likened her call to an old-fashioned “newspaper crusade.”

“We are the people who run this country,” Ms Ivins said in the column published in the Jan. 14 edition of the Star-Telegram. “We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war.

“Raise hell,” she continued. “Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and are trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush’s proposed surge.”

O Molly…dearest Molly Ivins! My life without you will be like a desolate desert. After falling in love with you years ago, after my sad eyes came in touch with the vibrations of your powerful words for the first time, I was hoping, one day, to have the honor and pleasure to meet you in person. You departed too soon before my love for you was consummated… sad for me and for the shattered humanity you worked hard to heal… you will be terribly missed, and may your beautiful soul rest in the peace you worked so hard to bring to our non-peaceful world!

I’m so grateful for Mollly Ivan’s. She was always on the side of sanity. She wrote with humor about those who were mean spirited. She gave many the courage to stand up to those who are “ridiculous.” Thank you Molly!

She was a true voice of sanity in a world gone mad. Molly fought the good fight right to the end - I hope we honor her spirit by not giving in or giving up. She’d be disappointed if we do.

I will miss Molly’s sharp wit and strong spirit.  She was an inspiration for us all. We have lost a great spokesperson, and a champion for the underdog.
Good bye Molly, you will be missed.

Why couldn’t it have been George Bush instead? The world would have been a better place!

I’m stunned - a beloved family member has died…I’ve been reading Molly’s columns for so long - learning and laughing from every one. How I will miss her. We must, every one of us, carry on her torch.  Speak Truth bravely, never forgetting to find the ridiculous and the hilarious - but never flinching in the face of evil or stupidity.  She was a shining star, leading all who found her and loved her on upward to being a better self.  The Light is much dimmer in the world today.
