U.S. and Iraqi soldiers killed 250 militants Sunday in a day of fighting in Najaf. According to an Iraqi official, the battle with the previously unknown militia involved tanks, jets and helicopters, one of which was shot down.

Reuters:

NAJAF, Iraq—U.S. and Iraqi forces killed some 250 gunmen from an apocalyptic Muslim cult on Sunday in a battle involving U.S. tanks and aircraft near the Shi’ite holy city of Najaf, Iraqi police, army and political sources said.

Two Americans were killed, the U.S. military said, when an attack helicopter went down during the day-long battle in what was one of the strangest incidents of the four-year conflict. Iraqi officials said the helicopter seemed to be shot down.

According to one Iraqi political source, hundreds of fighters drawn from both Sunni and Shi’ite communities were still fighting. A Reuters reporter at the scene, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad, saw U.S. tanks and heard blasts after dark and an Iraqi officer said F-16 jets were bombing the area.

So an “Army of the Sky” appears out of the blue and required instant destruction, with no survivors.  Any injured are finished off, point-blank.  Iraq troops take full credit and leave no survivors to tattle or contradict the official version.  Shiite heretics were about to murder Shiites and desecrate shrines, we are told.  The local coroner, anxious not to end up un a slab himself, is not available for interviews.  No Seymour Hersh will ever be able to interview the locals or check the facts.  Condi Rice, Bob Gates, and W will read out “details” of the case that no one else can corroborate, but which NYT and WAPO will print as facts.  Watch Petraeus claim repeated triumphs of this sort.

Women and children have been involved in acts of violence for as many years as there has been conflict in poverty-stricken lands. Don’t let your American biases against women let you think that they nor children are incapable of handling weapons. Just because Bush doesn’t put them on the frontline doesn’t mean that the Sunni or Shi’ite don’t.

Reports are beginning to surface that this group numbered many women and children in its membership. It will be interesting to see how many of the 300(the number varies according to the spokesman)‘insurgents/terrorists’were women and children. This whole story stinks of a Pentagon spin on either a fantasy or a massacre.

Only innocent people have been killed. Big victory for Bush/Cheney and their servants in Iraq.
