Military Sacrifices Soldiers for Escalation

The Pentagon will no longer limit the time a soldier can spend fighting on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The military can now cycle the same troops indefinitely in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan, where soldiers previously could not serve more than 24 cumulative months.

AP:

Until now, the Pentagon’s policy on the Guard or Reserve was that members’ cumulative time on active duty for the Iraq or Afghan wars could not exceed 24 months. That cumulative limit is now lifted; the remaining limit is on the length of any single mobilization, which may not exceed 24 consecutive months, [Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter] Pace said.

In other words, a citizen-soldier could be mobilized for a 24-month stretch in Iraq or Afghanistan, then demobilized and allowed to return to civilian life, only to be mobilized a second time for as much as an additional 24 months. In practice, Pace said, the Pentagon intends to limit all future mobilizations to 12 months.

Members of the Guard combat brigades that have served in Iraq in recent years spent 18 months on active duty—about six months in pre-deployment training in the United States, followed by about 12 months in Iraq. Under the old policy, they could not be sent back to Iraq because their cumulative time on active duty would exceed 24 months. Now that cumulative limit has been lifted, giving the Pentagon more flexibility.

Fox News’ bashing of a dead soldier’s Mother, Cindy Sheehan is disgraceful while George Bush is trying to find out why the White House chef can’t get fresh strawberries.

“Slowly, slowly, slowly it will sink into the consciousness of even the slowest American that his/her government doesn’t give a rat’s ass about him/her as an individual.

It will slowly, slowly, slowly dawn on these patriotic folk that they’ve been conditioned from birth to think “My Country, Right or Wrong” and to willingly step right up to be slaughtered on command by “authority.”

Hell, they might even begin to think for themselves and learn critical analysis to enable them to determine how and when they’re being used and abused, not for the benefit of their country, but for the benefit of those few rich, arrogant, corrupt “elite” who actually run things.

Not likely, though, in my lifetime.”

That makes two of us. Great quote and insight, by the way. I have maintained for years that I don’t live in a democracy, rather the elitist vision of a militaristic corporatocracy. This “sacrifice” of people is in line with that cruel cabal’s way of “thinking”.

The real cost of this war will be played out in the streets of America years from now when these war veterans can’t cope with the emotional issues of being in numerous wars and have no one to turn to. They’ll be our next generation of homeless, mass murders filling the countries jails and mental institutions. Bush will be long gone out of office and will care even less than he cares now. There is nothing patroitic about sending the same men to war after war after war. The military and their families have been used by Bush like a two dollar whore. All the reinlistment bonuses in the world will not be able to pay for the physical and emotional toll they endure from pimp Bush.

Had this happened when Dubbya was gloriously “serving” in our military he would have been on the next plane to Canada. Indentured servitude has replaced military service for the enrichment of Haliburton et al. The military industrial complex rolls on.

When leaders admit responsibility for their mistakes, why is it always their followers who pay? Who holds both duty and honor at the top and why aren’t they leading? Where are constitutional balances AND justice for ALL? When did WE veto American morality and why? Who? What? Where? When? Why?

Does anybody know how many Israeli soldiers are serving in Iraq? Or how many sons and daughters of American right wing Jews there are in Iraq? Considering how vehemently right wing Jews like Lieberman, Kagan, Crystal, et al support Bush’s escalation of the war, are we correct in assuming there are hundreds of Jewish kids joining the military every day to defend Israel and America?

Are members of AIPAC, JDL and the American Enterprise Institute encouraging their kids to join the military and risk their lives in this war?

Our troops and their families have sacrificed a lot for their country, and now they being forced to return again and again to battle. They could use some help.
