Exxon Allegedly Paid for Climate Misinformation Drive

Following in the footsteps of big tobacco, ExxonMobil paid 43 ideological groups $16 million to attack the science behind global warming, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

The real scandal isn’t that Exxon paid such groups to pimp its version of “reality,” but that the media felt obligated to take an “on the other hand” approach in reporting those fringe assertions about climate change.

AP via Forbes:

ExxonMobil Corp. gave $16 million to 43 ideological groups between 1998 and 2005 in a coordinated effort to mislead the public by discrediting the science behind global warming, the Union of Concerned Scientists asserted Wednesday.

The report by the science-based nonprofit advocacy group mirrors similar claims by Britain’s leading scientific academy. Last September, The Royal Society wrote the oil company asking it to halt support for groups that “misrepresented the science of climate change.”

If democracy has any possibility of meeting our new challenges—which I think is arguable—it certainly cannot without the populace being given truthful information. And nothing demonstrates this more forcefully than the Iraq war and how far behind we are in dealing with global warming.

My idea is an elite set of non working moms in every congressional district to both educate their local communities and let their congresspersons know what is required of them (if they would like to return for another term.)

Ecological reality is not a partisan issue, it is REALITY.

If anyone is interested in the above idea, please send me an email: joneden at yahoo dot com

With apologies to Steve Miller and Pink Floyd - let’s just change our National Anthem to either “Take The Money And Run” or “Money” and be done with it. That’ll give the “new” Congress something meaningful to vote on and a real sense of accomplishment.

So what exactly is going on here. The title says that they paid $16mill to 43 groups to discredit the climate bandwagon.

So does this mean they paid that money to get groups to report fraudulent information to the contrary of what is presented as evidence to global warming.

I have heard opinions that consider man made global warming a myth. If the situation was reversed and most everyone agreed that global warming is not happening, then would those that funded “An Inconvenient Truth” be trying to provide misinformation? Or just trying to show evidence to the contrary.

There are two sides to the global warming debate. Only one of which is being heard and is getting huge publicity. Even if the opposition is wrong, I would like for someone to get their voice out so I can see what they have to say.

So what’s surprising about this news story; business as usual—trite but true—misinformation, lies, propaganda, whatever it takes to get the results you want, do megalomaniacs have boundaries—does it make a difference to sociopaths, if millions are killed or if the planet is devastated; probably not.

Big Tobacco and his conjoined oil cousin, ExxonMobil, went on to say, “It’s just too hard to make an honest buck in America these days. You’ve got global competitors jerking-off the same congressmen you jerked-off just weeks ago. What’s a poor corporation to do?”

Big Tobacco and ExxonMobil’s uncle, Uncle Sam, replied, “It’s the order of the New World we’re creating. Moshpit Capitalism rules, man. And ‘I Want You’ to keep up if you can!”

Jeffrey Keith “Jeff” Skilling of Enron executive fame explained, “Buy-off officials. Manipulate markets. Rip off shareholders. Steal pensions. It’s all here on my new CD, Jail House Corporatism.”

In a quarterly speech to applauding Federal Bank Chiefs, politico/economic ego, George Bush pronounced, “Make no mistake about it. It’s the economically privileged telling the middle class how it’s gonna be… fuck you, shut up and go to work. ‘Cause we own the printing presses, heh-heh.”

Jeffrey Skilling’s older brother, Tom, a meteorologist, put it this way, “So expect this devastating arctic economic front to continue its sweep across North America then drop toward Mexico before reeking havoc all across South America. From there, we anticipate this Class War Machine Event to spread rapidly to Europe, Asia, then clean across the globe. Exciting stuff. Have a great weekend, my friends!”

(oh well, it’s just life, right?)
