According to ABC News, the president intends to replace Gen. Bob Casey, who currently oversees the Iraq war, with Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, and when Gen. John Abizaid retires in March, Bush will ask Adm. William Fallon to take over Central Command. Leave it to Bush to find someone from the Navy to oversee two ground wars.

ABC News:

Officials tell ABC News a wild card naval aviator, Adm. William Fallon, has been asked to take over Iraq’s Central Command and replace Gen. John Abizaid when he retires in March. The official announcement is expected on Monday.

Fallon currently heads Pacific Command, overseeing U.S. military forces in the Pacific and Indian Ocean areas. The new job would have him taking charge of operations in Afghanistan. While it is highly unusual that a Navy admiral would be called upon to run essentially two ground operations, Bush wants fresh eyes on the situation.

The president is also expected to replace the overall commander in Iraq, Gen. George Casey. Officials say Casey’s replacement is expected to be Lt. Gen. David Petraeus who has completed two tours in Iraq—one as a division commander during the invasion and another heading the training of Iraq security forces. He completed that job in 2005.

what a country we live in. we have generals willing to accept a promotion fully knowing it would be a death sentence for many of the soldiers under his command. may they one day live with bush, cheney and rumsfeld in hell.

this is the same “reply” of what happened in Vietnam.  if Generals didn’t agree with the top brass they were “removed”.  Casey is one of few that has stated “remove all troops”, it is political not military to solve.

Why dont the generals just refuse to follow Bush’s orders to put more troops in Iraq? I know it is called mutiny, but in this case, they would get a lot of support…

This really is all about more of the same.

This administration has never bent with the prevailing winds. It has always remained staunchly entrenched in it’s own worldview in spite of the results (or lack thereof). And so they once again play word games: surge (escalation), new way forward (stay the course). And once again, they will ignore the lives lost, the money spent and the will of the nation in order to do what THEY want. I find it simply mind boggling. And can someone please tell me how a politician needs “political will” to call this administrations bluff and start playing rough with these clowns? I thought they were elected to do the peoples will (see get the hell out of Iraq). Maybe I just need my morning coffee…I must have been dreaming…

This general exchange is simply another half-hearted smoke screen. A slight of hand as it were and it’s really telling that the administration puts so little effort in making these things more believable. The Iraq misadventure is still failing. It must be the generals fault (ignore that they are disagreeing with the president and often have). Replace them and tell the American people “See, I’m doing stuff!” It all sounds the same to me.

Don’t be too harsh on the Navy choice itself…these guys are good at their job. Problem is, they won’t be in charge of things, just as it has been with the Army guys previously.

PS: the Navy does, by the way, field some of the finest ground forces in the world (aka Seals).

If the land generals can’t win on land than try the water generals.

Finding “Yes” men these days isn’t as easy as it once was for Bu$h Inc. An admiral is now going to command the ground troops in Iraq. Getting his ship into Baghdad should provide Haliburton with one hell of another no-bid contract.
What’s next, make a former official of an Arabian horse association the head of FEMA. Heck of a job Georgie.

I’m not surprised at Bush’s choice of a Navy person…...he’s screwed every other choice up too.
