United Farm Workers Cleared of Wrongdoing

A United Farm Workers boycott campaign poster.

The California state attorney general’s office has found no wrongdoing in the United Farm Workers Union’s handling of its affiliated charities. The probe was launched in response to allegations raised by a series of articles published in the Los Angeles Times.

AP via Mercury News:

A state probe of charities with links to the United Farm Workers Union found they did not break any laws for nonprofit organizations, the state attorney general announced Tuesday.

“We found no basis to any of the allegations that we investigated,” Attorney General Bill Lockyer said in a statement.

However, Lockyer said there was “the appearance of impropriety” and recommended the charities strengthen their procedures to avoid it in future.

Lockyer investigated after the Los Angeles Times reported in a series of January articles that the UFW and several affiliated charities appeared to have misrepresented the uses to which certain donations would be put.
