Clinton and Giuliani Lead the Pack in Poll

Clinton and Giuliani
Left: Washington Post / right: themoderatevoice.com

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Hillary Clinton and Rudolph Giuliani in the lead for their parties’ nominations.  John McCain, who has lost considerable support among independent voters—possibly due to his plan to send more troops to Iraq—polled closely behind Giuliani.

Obviously it’s far too early to predict the race based on these results, but it’s worth noting that the GOP’s two front-runners (Newt polled a distant third) are less rabidly conservative than Republican primaries tend to accept.  On the Democratic side, Barack Obama, despite tremendous national media attention, still polls behind Hillary, whose favorability numbers have increased during her years in the Senate.

Washington Post:

Clinton has a clear head start over other prospective Democratic candidates, with Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), who only a month ago expressed interest in the 2008 race, running second and former senator John Edwards (N.C.), the party’s 2004 vice presidential nominee, in third.

Giuliani’s advantage in the Republican race appears more tenuous: He holds a narrow lead over Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), who is far ahead of Giuliani in organizing a presidential campaign. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who has not disclosed his plans for 2008, is well back in third.

Giuliani enjoys strongly favorable ratings, according to the survey, with two-thirds of Americans giving him positive marks. His leadership after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, earned him widespread praise.

Clinton remains the most polarizing politician among those considering a campaign for president in 2008, but her image has improved perceptibly during her six-year tenure in the Senate.

In contrast, McCain’s favorability ratings have declined over the past nine months. Among independents, his support has dropped 15 percentage points since March. Independents were his strongest supporters when he sought the Republican nomination in 2000. The decline comes at a time when McCain is calling for sending more troops to Iraq and has aggressively reached out to conservative groups and Christian conservative leaders.

OBAMA is the one for America now.  He is incisive, brilliant, and seems to have skill in bringing good policy out of confusing approaches.  A good campaign most likely will reveal that more in him.

Let’s choose Obama.

DennisD posts “Neither Hillary or Rudy have had an original idea in their lives nor do they have the national support to win.
Please, news media in general, don’t run these meaningless BS polls two years away from the election”

Media and few pollsters are telling the public that THEY have selected the candidates and you are going to pick one. This is how they screwed up the nation by picking one lousy prez after another. I look at them with great suspicion.

Hillary will dance on 42nd street naked, or kiss George Bush if she believes these acts will bring her closer to the presidency.

I’d have to have a signed contract for a government job paying more then 200K per annum, a bonded bank account containing my four year salary, and 5X7 glossies of Hillary making love to Osama Bin Laden before she’d get my vote....and even then I’d watch my back!

Neither Hillary or Rudy have had an original idea in their lives nor do they have the national support to win.
Please, news media in general, don’t run these meaningless BS polls two years away from the election. I haven’t heard either of the above state a position on anything yet, other than Obama’s on Iraq and he doesn’t have the experience to even be considered for the job.
Whatever happened to newspapers doing investigative reporting? God knows this administration has enough potential to keep a slew of them investigating 24 hours a day rather print these ridiculous surveys.
Since name recognition seems to be the standard, I guess we’ll be electing Paris Hilton two years from now. Enough already!

Not only will Clinton split the country in an election she WILL split the dems as many of the net roots me being one of them will vote Green before I vote for her.  The more time she spends in the senate the more she looks like a repuke and I will never vote for a repuke no matter what letter(D or R) is beside their name.  Sorry Hillary you will have to join the GayOldParty if you want a nomination.
