Kirk Douglas fights off the Romans in “Spartacus,” one of many classics featuring the film legend.

Acting legend Kirk Douglas turned 90 over the weekend and issued this birthday essay to commemorate the occasion, calling on the next generation to at least try to solve the world’s problems.

PRNewswire via Yahoo:

Let’s face it: THE WORLD IS IN A MESS and you are inheriting it. Generation Y, you are on the cusp. You are the group facing many problems: abject poverty, global warming, genocide, AIDS, and suicide bombers to name a few. These problems exist, and the world is silent. We have done very little to solve these problems. Now, we leave it to you. You have to fix it because the situation is intolerable.

You need to rebel, to speak up, write, vote, and care about people and the world you live in. We live in the best country in the world. I know. My parents were Russian immigrants. America is a country where EVERYONE, regardless of race, creed, or age has a chance. I had that chance. You are the generation that is most impacted and the generation that can make a difference.

I love this country because I came from a life of poverty. I was able to work my way through college and go into acting, the field that I love. There is no guarantee in this country that you will be successful. But you always have a chance. Nothing should interfere with it. You have to make sure that nothing stands in the way.

When I blow out my candles—90! ... it will take a long time ... but I’ll be thinking of you.

As someone who was at the career-endangering forefront of demanding that McCarthy-era, black-listed artists be given screen credit for their work on HIS production company’s films, Kirk Douglas has earned real street credentials as an advisor to America’s youth on doing their part to fix some of the world’s problems.

Thank you, Mr. Douglas.

On a less significant, movie fan note, I don’t think there has been one “modern” actor in the past 10 or 20 years who has given a better performance on a multitude of levels than Kirk Douglas’ in SPARTACUS, a performance for which Douglas was not even nominated for an Academy Award.

Mr. Douglas is right to suspect, particularly from his lifelong artistic/business vantage point, that America has lowered its standards of excellence and just might need several kicks in the pants from various sources as a reminder.

Happy Birthday Mr. Douglas and my best wishes to you and family.

I am from the generation after yours- they call us the babyboomer generation and yes my generation is at fault I believe more then yours.
Yours being the last great generation and I thank-you.

But let us speak to your profession and the failure to address the real issues that created this world. Hollywood has failed to present the truth to the citizens of this republic since the end of WWII. Management and actors have cared about only one thing- wealth and power to control their materialist life styles not this country.

Your generation and mine have failed our children through our lack of involvement in family, community, and government- local, state, included.
Since 1913 with the passage of laws that subvert our Constitution and Bill of Rights `Federal Reserve & IRS; we have kept our heads in the TV and Movie Theaters instead of watching these foreign owners of our country.

I see laws and Treaty’s passed through history and our Congress allowing this. We allow intelligence orgaizations, CFR, Trilateral Commission, and Federal Reserve- IRS and the CEO’s to destroy our middle class.

As a contractor said to me one time when I was a 12 year old ” when you use to build a house the foundation was the key- now a days its the permits just like this country.”

Mr. Douglas I just hope the generation that follows me can do a lot better, but I know through years of research it come down to one thing- greed and power, because when your profits from `War-Drugs-Slavery-Genecide are in the Trillions and thats not enough- Heaven help our next generation.
