Rep. Dennis Kucinich at a 2005 speech in Lakewood, Ohio.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) said in a statement Monday that he will run for president in the 2008 election, prompted in part by his own party’s decision to continue funding for the Iraq war.  Kucinich discussed the funding issue at length in an interview with Truthdig.

  • Associated Press:

CLEVELAND—Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, said Monday he is planning another bid because his party isn’t pushing hard enough to end the Iraq war.

In a statement, Kucinich said he plans to formally announce his candidacy on Tuesday at Cleveland’s City Hall, where he served as mayor of his hometown in the 1970s.

The liberal, anti-war Ohio congressman said he was inspired to run because he disagrees with the way some of his fellow Democrats are handling the war, including approval of a proposal to spend $160 billion more on the conflict.

“Democrats were swept into power on Nov. 7 because of widespread voter discontent with the war in Iraq,” said Kucinich, 60. “Instead of heeding those concerns and responding with a strong and immediate change in policies and direction, the Democratic congressional leadership seems inclined to continue funding the perpetuation of the war.”

The anti-war message was also the cornerstone of Kucinich’s 2004 bid, which drew support from some Hollywood celebrities. His previous presidential proposals also have included a national peace department and a single-payer, universal health care system.

I think DK would make a very good president. I think John Edwards would make a very, very good president and I also think that Al Gore would be an excellent president. He won the last time he ran, as we all know. Here we have three intelligent men to pick from and one has already signed up.The only people that will vote Republican in the next presidential election are the same people that are still waiting for them to bring WMDs out of Iraq.

    Go Dennis!

Since I’m an ACTION man, I’d like to suggest some campaign one-liners for ya, Dennis:
    Things you definitely should say:
    1) My Fellow Americans & Gawd Bless the Younitid States uv Imerrika
    2) Read my lips, no new taxes.  But I am going to bill China and Mexico $2500/head for each illegal worker and use the money to pay down the debt
    3) Charlton Heston is the greatest actor to have ever lived, he’s my best friend and I’m a card-carrying member of the NRA
    4) I’m absolutely against blow-jobs in the White House
    5) George Bush is a victim of the times, otherwise he’d go down in history as the greatest president ever.
    6) I am a believer and I go to church regularly, and more often, when I can.
    7) We have to stop welfare.
But, definitely don’t scream out “HeeeeHaaaaawwww” in a deranged, murderous, shrill voice.  Good luck!!!

Right, Dennis doesn’t have a chance.  But the American vote can be bought.  We all recognize, don’t we, the “American Way” when it comes to elections?  The Committee To Elect Kucinich has to get to work on a strategy which will include a complete Dennis makeover and a media campaign, using all the proven methods, to get “the message out to American voters.” Dennis can be sold to American voters.  Bush was.  Dennis has to say whatever has to be said to get elected, then, after winning, impliment his a agenda.  Oh, I forgot.. and put together a consummate band of muckrakers and mudslingers. Go, Dennis; integrity doesn’t cut it in Imerrika.

Great--and during the campaign, Kucinich, will get more MSM coverage, and will bring to light, why we need to get out of Iraq NOW; why we need to be energy independent and why socialized medicine is imperative.

I’m hoping Al Gore also runs.

Why can’t Dennis Kucinich to be more bold and say “Bring the troops home now.” Also:  “Impeach Bush and Cheney.”?

I agree, I don’t know what so difficult about supporting the what the majority of the American people demand as well as the obvious course established by the constitution, the one all of the current traitors swore to uphold.

It is true, Dennis could be faking us out, ready to throw in the towel in support of Hillary...but what the hell are our choices?  They have set up an elaborate system of bullshit left organizations and websites to misguide the left, they have planted the opposition in congress (see Conyers and Pelosi)...Dennis has the platform of the people and any push in that direction has to be a good thing right?  If people heard his plan for universal health care alone, that could change the debate in this country.

The Democrats had better do what they said they would do. Get us out of Iraq. The fact that some Iraqis will die as a result of our withdrawal will not change the fact that many more will die if we stay.

I told John Kerry he could win in 2004 if he would vow to exit Iraq, and apologize to the world for allowing ourselves to be duped into going to Iraq in the first place. Instead he tried to be a typical politician. 6 weeks before the 2004 election he sounded just like Bush.

The financial landscape of the world is changing. We won’t be the biggest player much longer. We had better learn how to play as a team member. As fas as I’m concerned Dennis Kucinich may be the only honest man left in our Federal Government. He seems to put the needs and interests of the middle classes and all of America ahead of his own. NOw isn’t that a refreshing change!

It never ceases to amaze me how you always find a few idiots like HONDO who just cannot control himself from referring to progressive Democrats in such derogatory manner as in his statements regarding Kucinich’s anouncement to run again for President. Talking about the “Lunatic Left”, I guess he felt it was his duty being from the “Lunatic Right” to balance out the discussion.

Dennis Kucinich would not be my first choice for president but his entry into the race will certainly force the other Democrats to talk about the important issues facing our nation. I do however hope he refrains this time from recommending another “Dept of Peace” or other such unrealistic solutions. That one recommendation really damaged any chance of being taken seriously by the mainstream media.

I totally agree with Robert that Dennis Kucinich needs to truly be bold and fully support unabated investigations, hearings and possible impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheny.  He needs to resist DLC Democrats like Rohm Emmanuel and Nancy Pelosi’s ridiculous suggestions that we need to work for bipartisan cooperation with Republicans. This is the same logic that cost many of the Democratic Veterans candidates their election bids for congress…

DK makes way too much sense for the uninformed voter. People like to believe BS and catchy slogans. Unless he can motivate people through fear, ala Bu$h Inc., there’s not much hope for him. If he can find a way to send out bills to each American for the war, trade deficit, lack of health care etc. he may just get and hold the average voters attention span.
For the “greatest country on earth” to have no universal health care, be systematically destroying its own manufacturing and jobs base, not to mention vaporizing what little balance there is or was in every part of the globe we stick our noses in is simply criminal.
Yet we watch both parties go along with it on a daily basis secure in the knowledge that they are getting theirs.
DK I wish you well - the longest journey must start with a single step.

Why can’t Dennis Kucinich to be more bold and say “Bring the troops home now.” Also:  “Impeach Bush and Cheney.”?

To himself and his supporters, Dennis Kucinich is the “real thing”.  He is not for me.

I recall how he was made to sit and “get with the program in 2004.” What will be different in 2008?

I have no illusions about our electoral system being broken.  Rahm Emmanuel was one who insured that only “moderate” (euphemism for corporate-bought) democrats got the bread to win in this year’s mid-term.

Kucinich’s function is to bring the left-progressives into the corporate tent… and to force us to “get with the program.”

It seems much too easy for Kucinich to be photographed flashing peace signs with Cindy Sheehan-- that’s a sure winner.  But it is not easy to have the strength of conviction to stand by Cynthia McKinney for her very real courage.

For progressives who get their news from the mainstream (including NPR):  that would not be indicative of “mature restraint.  For me, though, it is indicative that Kucininich sold out before he has even left the starting blocks.

I cannot vote for anyone who chooses self-promotion at the expense of what is right.  What is right is to stand for the American People and their real needs: including the half that cannot or do not vote.  What is right is to choose doing right-- not what benefits oneself at the expense of others.

Kucinich, Obama, Gore, and most certainly Clinton-- they are all so severely tainted.

I cannot bear to hear once more of their big bold plans to tinker with the minimum wage when our country borrows 2 billion dollars a day and spends two billion dollars a week on a criminal war.

Dennis Kucinich is a very wise man, and a good soul.  However, he will be a hard sell in the Midwest and the South where the word “progressive” is not a mindset to which the vast majority will relate. I think the leap from a W to a Kucinich would too big of a stretch for those sections of the country.  Some voters in the Midwest and South are unhappy with W because he has made them look bad for supporting him, but it does not mean they have changed their mindset which made W attractive to them in the first place.  They would like another W who isn’t W and certainly Dennis Kucinich is miles apart from being that kind of a person. Thank goodness!!

One tiny bit of advice:  Openly embrace the label “LIBERAL” It’s not a four-letter word; voters have to come to understand that the solution to the mess we’ve “conservatively” created is liberal thinking and liberal action.

What slipped under the national media radar before the ‘06 election was Kucinich’s warning to beware of another 9/11-style October surprise. Obviously, he knows the score. Whether he’s got the guts to kick 911Truth into the national debate for the presidency is another matter. Grabbing hold of that political/media 3rd rail might charge his campaign like nothing else. Then again it just might fry him. But, it’s no different for any of us.  If the election’s cancelled, so what if he frys? So what if any of us fry, if the book tour’s cancelled, the dinner party’s cancelled, the concert, the play, everything’s cancelled?

If they do it again, thermal nuclear war is definitely on the table. Putin stood down last time. Who the hell in the main-stream media questioned at all the fact the Putin did nothing about the US occupying the military bases in all the former Soviets around the Caspain Sea? Nothing strange about that? What was discussed between Bush and Putin in the hot-line link on 9/11? Did any single brilliant MSM analysts ever ask? You can be sure that any US move on Iran is not going to happen without a reaction from Putin and very likely China as well.

But, does Cheney give a damn? Why the hell should he, his pacemaker could fritz out any second. His madmen handlers don’t give a damn. They all live in the sort of shadows where they all half expect the next thing they hear to be, “Sorry, you know to much.” Stange Love is the model. Stange Love is the the idol. Stange Love is the the animus. These madmen need to be shown to their cells. We have suffered them too long.

Investigate, indict, prosecute and execute! Support 911Truth.

Maybe the Democrats have lost it just like the Repugnants—I mean—the Republicans.  Maybe Dennis should run under the banner of the Green Party where he would have more leeway to promote with Al Gore the carbon freeze movement - single pay health care - instant runoff voting - repeal the Electoral College - regulate corporate greed - support an internationgl justice system - and so on and so on.  Dennis the superman can do it.
