Nancy Pelosi put the kibosh on Alcee Hastings’ bid for the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.  In defiance of the decision and his critics, who took issue with a prior corruption scandal, Hastings (at right) declared: “Sorry, haters, God is not finished with me yet.”

AP:

WASHINGTON (AP)—In a decision that could roil Democratic unity in the new House, Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi passed over Rep. Alcee Hastings Tuesday for the chairmanship of the Intelligence Committee.

Hastings, currently the No. 2 Democrat on the panel, had been aggressively making a case for the top position, supported by members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Critics pointed out that he had been impeached when he was a federal judge and said naming him to such a sensitive post would be a mistake just as the Democrats take over House control pledging reforms.

“I am obviously disappointed with this decision,” Hastings, D-Fla., said in a statement thanking his supporters. “I will be seeking better and bigger opportunities in a Democratic Congress.”

He learned his bid for the chairmanship was unsuccessful during a closed-door meeting with Pelosi on Tuesday.

“haters”? any man (or woman)of his statue or station in life using neo-ghetto slang to express their obvious hurt feelings of a lost entitlements to a lead position in government, thinking it’s due to them because etnicity, term of service or sex, demostrates not only a character lacking true leadership abilities but a character ego driven vanity. hasting’s is unsuitable for higher office.

the man’s an arrogant ass and a crook!

Hastings should not have ask to have his name in the hat for this position.  But since he did, Pelosi was correct in not pulling it out.

I am hoping that Nancy Pelosi will not let Jane Harman chair the Intelligence Committee.  Anyone who saw her performance on Meet The Press will know what I mean.  What she did not know was so appalling, that it sparked someone to run against her. In my opinion, given our current situation, that will be her most important appointment.

Dear Nancy—

You go girl!  You did the right thing.  Now put Jane Harman in charge of the Intelligence Committee and we’ll all know that you know what you are doing !

This was a very good decision by Speaker to be Pelosi. Kind of a no-brainer. The last thing the Dems. need is to appoint people to positions of leadership that have been tainted by scandal. I hope Speaker to be Pelosi does not succumb to pressure from cacuses that have a bias because of race, gender or seniority for that matter. Our Country is going to go thru a cleansing process and we need people leading these various committies that are above reproch, period…

as with Rep. Murtha, corrupt conduct caused Rep. Hastings to fail to earn a leader role.

That is a good thing.

Their districts can forgive their past transgressions, but when you lead an important committee - and one that did a horrific job in checking and balancing the President and Vice President in their manipulation of intelligence info .... you better be above reproach.

Rep. Hastings was not, and should rightly step aside for someone with unimpeachable integrity.
