The vote is in, and the results are disappointing. Steny Hoyer beat John Murtha by a vote of 149 to 86 in the election for House majority leader.

NYT:

WASHINGTON—House Democrats chose Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland as their majority leader today after a bruising fight that cast a cloud over the party’s post-election celebration.

The election of Mr. Hoyer over Representative John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania, by a vote of 149 to 86, was an embarrassing setback for Representative Nancy J. Pelosi of California, who will be speaker of the House in the new Congress and had backed Mr. Murtha.

This moment is new in American history, to turn out a junta illegally installed with a TV-fed propaganda machine like no other, with the danger of collaborators turncoats and Republican-lites, give Nancy some time to do her historic duty.

In Comment #38411, Bob is absolutely right: the REAL antiwar leader is Conyers. Wouldn’t it be nice to have him as majority leader? After all, his position on the neocon war agenda ACTUALLY reflects the views of most ACTUAL Democrats.

But of course, he’s even more hated by the Israel lobby than Murtha, so you can forget about him ever getting to be our majority leader.

Quite frankly whoever won this, I was going to be disappointed. Murtha was right on Iraq, but not exactly a progressive. Hoyer is just the sort of politician you would expect to rise to majority leader. My eggs are in the Conyers basket anyways. The leadership always needs to be watched carefully by the rank and file. Nothing has changed.

Republicans are the problem
Democrats are not the solution.

Once we realize this true change will happen.
Until then, it is just a bunch of drunken musical chairs.

The dems will send more troops, not challenge torture, not challenge the lose of habeas corpus, no one will go to jail for war profiteering, Libby will be pardoned without a peep, Iran will be bombed and the culture of coruption will spread deeper and deeper into D.C. and we the citizens will wake up in a police state that is bankrupt.

Democracy is Dead.
Plutocracy Reins.
Long live the Corporation of America!!
Hail to the Supreme C.E.O.!!

Score another one for AIPAC. This is further evidence that when Bush decides to launch his new war of aggression against Iran, the supposedly “antiwar” Democrats will go meekly along—because that’s what the Israel lobby wants.

Frankly, I’m not convinced that either choice—Murtha or Hoyer—was all that great. Given that corruption was reported to be the most defining issue for the voters in the recent election, the very LAST thing that the Democrats need right now is a House Majority Leader who could be considered suspect. On the other hand, from what I’ve been hearing about Hoyer, there’s a possibility that he’ll turn out to be “Republican-Lite” and that there won’t be much change.  It’s not exactly a win-win situation, is it?

Uh-oh. Cracks appearing, although there was discontent in the ranks when Nancy Pelosi first backed Murtha so openly and strongly. A bit of post-election bravado perhaps.

The American people, as they demonstrated last Tuesday are not children. Even children recognize the leadership John Murtha demonstrated when he took the lead in demanding a new course in Iraq. Today, the Democrats in the House turned their back on those who voted for a change in Iraq with a cowardly vote for Majority Leader. How pathetic!
