Nancy Pelosi, set to become the first woman, Californian and Italian-American speaker of the House, defied the odds to drive her party to victory.  According to a San Francisco Chronicle profile, Pelosi’s determination and cold calculation had as much to do with the Democrats’ success as President Bush’s unpopularity.

San Francisco Chronicle:

Washington—On a snowy morning last December when the talk in Washington was that Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s support for pulling troops from Iraq might cost Democrats the 2006 election, a reporter asked Pelosi whether she needed to gain seats in the coming election to return as Democratic leader.

“I fully intend to be standing here as speaker of the House next year. Any other questions?” Pelosi responded.

Nearly a year later, Pelosi has exceeded even her own expectations. Not only will she be speaker, but her party will govern with a comfortable majority after picking up at least 28 seats. The Senate will be in Democratic hands. Her picture is expected next week on the covers of Time and Newsweek, and there is already talk that she should run for president in 2008.

So how did the San Francisco congresswoman, who even some Democrats said was too partisan, liberal and shrill to lead the party, take them to the majority?

The answer has as much to do with the tactical skills Pelosi developed as chair of the California Democratic Party in the early 1980s as her positions on policy matters such as the war, which now are regarded well within the mainstream of American politics.

Pelosi is a hands-on political operator who was personally involved in more than 60 congressional races through election day and continues to closely monitor seven races that still are not final, aides say.

I can’t express this enough to you all, ” time ” is very limited.  Iraq needs to be the Number 1 issue to be dealt with ASAP.

If certain things aren’t DONE, we will be seeing the following:

Flying out of Iraq just like Sagion - Vietnam years ago.

Time squared ~ by price.

I’m not that hopeful, for one very good reason.

Of all the things the Democrats might theoretically do, probably the most important is to stop Bush from dragging America into a new war - against Iran.

But there are too many “blue dog” Democrats in Congress. If Bush pushes for a war against Iran, the Blue Dogs and some other Democrats will jump on that bandwagon - because that’s what AIPAC wants.

I don’t think most Americans realize how likely this is, and how ruinous for us it will be if it happens.

Don’t be overexcited over Pelosi. I hope for, but doubt there will be much REAL change in the next two years.

The Dems are just the lesser of two evils. Their gains in congress and the senate have served as an easy out for the GOP sickoes who’ve led this country to the brink of bankruptcy, into a horrible war, and perversed sacred words like freedom, democracy, and patriotism.

Will Pelosi and company repeal the fascist Military Commissions Act? Or the Patriot Act? Or the The Detainee Interrogation Bill? Or the Surveillance Bills?

Will they re-address 9/11?

Will they bring our troops home from Irag, and stop the hegemony?

Will they protect our boarders?

Will they inquire on the building of secret prisons on our own soil?

Will they allow the hundreds of detainees at Gitmo and other secret prisons to continue to rot without even the most basic human rights?

Will they hold anyone accountable? Or will Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld, and Pearle, and Rove, and the rest of them, get off without even a slap on the wrist?

Pray for change. Weep and screem for your country everyday.

Don’t be misled by new management, with their big talk of “new direction.” It is not time for the Dems to make nice with Bush and Co. It is time for JUSTICE! IT IS TIME FOR REAL CHANGE!

BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW! IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY NOW! Lock those bastards in the torture prisons they built and let them rot without trial, without representation, without seeing any evidence against them.

America, we HAVE sacrificed our liberty for safety and unless we have the evil, destructive, horrible legislature that may inprison us rolled back, we will continue to not be THE LAND OF THE FREE!

Do not wait until it touches YOU personally. BY then it will be too late.

Pelosi needs to recieve millions of letters from those who will not wait until they themselves or someone they know loses their rights.

The Democrats claim to represent us, and they should. The government is not our guardian, our BIG BROTHER. It is not up to them to decide what is best for us!

The Democrats, the Republicans, the government, must do what we, America, tell them. Otherwise, NO ONE has any obligation to obey their laws, to pay their taxes, to DIE for their “policy.”

Don’t wait until it is too late. We must send a message, in millions, if not billions, telling them what we, THE PEOPLE, demand.

Pelosi, you must hold them accountable. You must work to repeal the fascist legislature. You must bring out troops home. You must seek justice. Then we, as a country, can move forward.

God Bless the World

Each human being is their own sovereign nation.

Open your eyes America. In Oaxaca, Mexico hundreds of thousands of people are protesting fascism. These men and women, boys and girls, are more patriotic than any of us. They are a great example for all of us, but yet the mainstream media barely even mentions this, and it is happening right now, right nextdoor.

STOP THE MARSHALL LAW! BRING OUR TROOPS HOME! IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY!

Open your eyes AMERICA.

What now? “Pelosi and Bush are Burying the Hatchet”?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061…n_go_pr_wh/ bush??xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What does she mean she’s not going to impeach Bush? She and the creep are “settling their differences,” what? Who in the world does she think she is? First off, she’s not even chosen yet to be the Speaker of the House. Sorry, Nancy, but there’s actually a process and competition for the position. As well, we the people have not spoken on the matter yet; though CNN and FOX and the others have weighed their desire for her quite heavily. The Democrats have been put in power on a mandate of the people to investigate the actions of this Administration which has steered the nation nearly off a cliff, and she’s to set the process of restoring America’s standing in the world and our quality of life, security, and health at home. Pelosi is there because we the people want our Constitution and Bill of Rights restored as of 4pm, friday afternoon, January 5th, 2007. We the people put the Democratsi in charge of the House because we want to get to the bottom of the massive number of deaths in the Gulf Coast which is directly connected to the Administration’s handling of the matter. Katrina was not just a glass of spilled milk, it was negligence to the worst degree demands independent investigation. We the people put the Democrats in power because we no longer want to be dependent on foreign, filthy and archaic Gas & Oil for our energy needs, and we are not going to be happy with simply raising the standard automotive mpg from 21mpg to 25mpg (1925 Ford Model T got 25 mpg). We want alternative energies now, not because we are dreamers, we want it because it is cheap, clean and fucking available. We the people put the Democrats in charge in charge to investigate why the Administration scared the bejeezus out of all of us with the notion that Sadam was minutes away from nuking Disneyland and the rest of America, when in fact we all now know that it was a bold face and well planned out lie. More than that, we now know that the small group in the Administration have had plans for invading Iraq since at least 1999 when they pressed Bill Clinton with the idea of Iraq invasion and US hegemony of the Middle East. We know about the Bush White House meetings with Oil executives and their 2000 pre-invasion plans for private profit pipelines throughout the region. We the people did not put Nancy Pelosi where she is today so that both she and Bush can feel comfortable together at dinner parties. We the people want transparency in government and we want results. We the people put Democrats in charge of the Congress because there has been criminal activity in the White House and we want it stopped and ultimately because we demand the IMPEACHENT of BUSH!

Speker of the House Kucinich sounds much better than Pelosi. This guy is ready to clean the House. Pelosi is readying to go to dinner parties with Bush.?

I hold immense respect and admiration for Ms. Pelosi.  I truly believe she is for the people, stepping in with determination to “work together”. She will bring integrity to the house of which is desperately needed.  (emphasis added)  And yes she has a plan. <sigh>  Never underestimate a Mother and a Grandmother, as
Ms. Pelosi is proof of that!  Congratulations to Ms. Pelosi.<clap, clap, clap>

After countless hours of determination, Rahm Emanuel fruits have paid off nicely. A very savvy, creative individual that moved farther, faster and harder than I have ever witnessed.  (you may now enjoy your weekend pass <giggle, giggle>)
Congratulations Mr. Emanuel! <clap, clap, clap>

I feel at ease, knowing that they will serve determined to “Turn this Congress Around “  to benefit all, for that is our mission.
We the people, with thy voting voice.

Listen to the people, George!

Sincerely,
Concerned Mother

One positive sign: Pelosi will be denying key chairmanships to key Democratic hawks. That means the pro-Israel hack warmonger Jane Harman will NOT get to chair of the house intelligence committee.

Now THAT is impressive:

“... Pelosi plans to block moves that would place hawks into important chairmanships. The sources said a key casualty would be Rep. Jane Harman…. Pelosi has rebuffed lobbyists in the pro-Israel community and defense industry that sought a chairmanship for Ms. Harman.”
