Saddam Hussein Sentenced to Death

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein reacts as the verdict is delivered Sunday during his trial, held under tight security in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.  Reactions to the verdict illustrate the sectarian divisions that have become so familiar in Iraq, with celebrations erupting in Shiite and Kurdish areas while some Sunni neighborhoods turned to violent protest.

Though the Bush administration denies interfering with the trial, the verdict was read only two days before the U.S. election, leading some to believe the timing was politically motivated.

  • Truthdig classic: Juan Cole on Saddam’s trial

  • AP via SFGate:

In the streets of Dujail, a Tigris River city of 84,000, people celebrated and burned pictures of their former tormentor as the verdict was read. In Baghdad, the Shiite bastion of Sadr City exploded in jubilation.

But in Saddam’s hometown of Tikrit, not far from Dujail, 1,000 people defied the curfew and carried pictures of the city’s favorite son through the streets. Some declared the court a product of the U.S. “occupation forces” and condemned the verdict. Policemen wept in the streets.

“By our souls, by our blood we sacrifice for you, Saddam,” the Tikrit crowds chanted.

A trial envisioned to heal Iraq’s deep ethnic and sectarian wounds appeared rather to have deepened the fissures.

“This government will be responsible for the consequences, with the deaths of hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands, whose blood will be shed,” Salih al-Mutlaq, a Sunni political leader, told Al-Arabiya satellite television.

Saddam’s execution is a very costly forgone conclusion.  There are nearly 2,800 dead and 20,000 wounded American troopers, and approx. 1.6 billion in *borrowed* treasure has been spent every week for the past several years—and for what?  All this just to execute a tin-pot dictator in a fractured, historically tribal country with no WMD?

    Why are we in Iraq?

Why haven’t we focused on Bin Ladin?

    This situation is absolutely pathetic.

George Bush and those who support him are responsible; such low deeds and faulty thinking borders on the insane!

Americans claim to be arrogant but with this arrogance comes ignorance and stupidity. Before looking at the ills of another nation look at your own, there is plenty for others to condemn.

    ======================

    well said truthbetold,

I argue that we, too, will have to answer to history. We are not responsible or accountable for what Saddam has done; we are responsible and accountable for what we have done
    ........................................................

And history is clear on this: In Iran, in Guatemala, in Vietnam, in Chile, in Nicaragua, and certainly in Iraq, the American people cannot plead ignorance. Even if the mainstream press covers such stories inadequately, there is sufficient information for us to know what our government is doing in our name. But for some reason, we prefer to avert our eyes and point the finger elsewhere

Saddam is no Osama. Osama is responsible for 9/11, not Saddam. Bush went after Saddam with all the military might and let go of Osama. This is America’s failure because of this utterly incompetent administration. A recent study shows that the invasion of Iraq caused 660,000 iraqi lives. How many has Saddam killed?

Uhhhh, second thought. That 660,000 was not murdered, massacre, It was merely “collateral damage”.

Mahatma Gandi would say “An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind”. I would like to know how many Iraqi civilians have died for Iraqi Freedom.  Is anyone counting?  There was a young American woman who was in Iraq counting the deaths but she, too, was murdered.  When will it stop?  ...I suggest voters go up to a 17 year old and say “Son, daughter,  who would you vote for on Tuesday?  Since you cannot vote, and if and when a draft comes up, you will be the first called, so please, tell me, who you would vote for if you could. Who do you, my dear 17 year youngian, need to win to support your future? I give you my vote.”

Yeah sure, good riddance, blah blah, snore. Gee, as if we really expected a different outcome from this “trial.” As if we really cared about what was happening with Saddam…he’s been out of the picture for years now.

I also get the feeling that this is what Karl Rove was banking on to turn the election in GOP favor (their “October surprise”), and the reason he was not worried about losing a house of congress. Sheesh, if so, then he has become terribly out of touch…good to see, finally, that “the architect” is accumulating a significant amount of rust in his bearings.

    Baghdad, Saturday, 4 November 2006

Baath Party on record: any harm to Saddam Husayn will close the door to negotiations and America will pay the greatest price it has ever paid in its history.

On Tuesday, 31 October 2006, the Culture and Information Bureau of the Iraqi Baath Party issued a statement in which it declared that the life of Iraqi President Saddam Husayn and his comrades “is a red line that the occupation must not cross.”

The Baath said in its statement that it “forcibly warns the American administration against the consequences of harming the President and his comrades and declares that America will pay an enormous price such as it has never paid in all its history if the President is caused any harm.”

“This is absolutely not a threat,” the Baath statement said, “it is rather a statement of fact.”

The Baath declared: “Our Party demands that the American Administration immediately and unconditionally release the President and his comrades. That is one of the fundamental preconditions for any negotiation such as America is now feverishly striving to hold with the Party and the Iraqi National Resistance.”

“Accordingly,” the Baath statement emphasized, “any arm done to the President will close the door to any possible negotiations and a final resolution will be taken not to allow any American forces to leave in flight from Iraq unless thousands of bodies go out with them in plastic bags or every inch of soil is covered in their bodies strewn around the country. The world will then witness once again, but this time an even more humiliating disorganized and cowardly flight from the green earth in their aircraft amidst the intense artillery and rocket bombardments of the Resistance – a route greater than what took place in Viet Nam.”
