Mother Jones:

IT’S WELL KNOWN that Israel is the world’s top recipient of U.S. military assistance, but not so often noted that most of the annual $3 billion in aid can be spent only on U.S.-made weapons. Below, a guide to the top industry beneficiaries along with their ethics records.

This is why, FWIW, I’ve chosen to become a US expat—I can’t stand contributing so much of my hard-earned tax dollars to the Israeli military machine and to line the pockets of the merchants of brutality.  Dwight D. Eisenhower was right all along—the military-industrial complex would grow and soon devour US democracy itself.

My wife, daughter and I are emigrating to Leipzig, Germany probably in May of 2009—that’s the famous home of Bach in the minds of most, though it’s also a growing hub of high-tech that’s happy to employ Americans for high wages so long as you have at least basic German and pick it up more as you go along.  We’d actually been hoping to move earlier but were delayed due to some frustrating obstacles with my wife’s job.  At least we’ll still be here for the ‘08 elections, I guess—I’m sort of an anybody but Hillary Clinton type even though I’ve leaned Democrat, she’s the worst kind of kiss-up to corporations and the military-industrial complex.

Quite a few of the people at my high school’s 10th reunion have also been doing the emigration thing lately, in part due to precisely this sort of frustration about where our tax dollars are going.  I want to support a democracy that works for its own people, not an imperialistic entity that fights wars and bleeds its own citizens for a foreign power.  I won’t stand for it anymore.

Regarding comment #36449 by C Quil on Israel’s use of cluster, phosphorous, and uranium weapons in Lebanon:

Yes; isn’t it nice to know that Israel’s vicious behavior in Lebanon had “MADE IN USA” and “PAID FOR BY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE” stamped all over it? See how safe our “alliance” with Israel makes us? What would we ever do without these indispensable “friends”?

It would be great to take even 10-20% of the monies we send overseas, like ISREAL, and others (with no payback on these loans) to MANY countries and use the money for the AMERICAN/US poverty in the Country, especially South, Katrina buildup, Health Care for all (like the heathcare our Congressmen get)and many programs in the US that desperatly need help/money. We should take care of our OWN FIRST. You couldn’t run a company by loaning money out and never seeing it again, as we do when we send TRILLIONS overseas!! This just increases the deficit which is WAY out of control.

Well, there was the rush order for more cluster bombs during the bombardment of Lebanon. And white phosphorus, which the Israelis first denied they used and then admitted to. The bodies of two babies who had been killed by white phosphorus bombs reignited when they were removed from the morgue fridges as the chemicals residue left on their bodies warmed up and were exposed to oxygen in the room.

Then there’s the DIME weapons, (dense inert metal explosive), still in the testing stages but may have been used in Lebanon, kind of a dry run and the perfect opportunity. Was this the reason the ceasefire was put off - to finish the tests? Doctors in Lebanon said that there were very strange wounds and the odd appearance of internal organs.

Some UN forces are finding radioactivity in some bombed areas of Lebanon too - depleted uranium warheads, perhaps?

Well, at least SOMEONE in America gets SOME benefit out of our otherwise worse-than-useless “alliance” with Israel!

What it is, is the Pentagon, the “defense” contractors, AIPAC, and the GOP who continues to support the military/industrial complex that has dominated our foreign policy and taxdollars since the end of WWII.

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence, clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with a series of hobgoblins, most of the imaginary”.
                  H.L. Mencken, 1920

And we continue to ignore the policies that create “enemies” in the first place!

Strange.  Why don’t we simply buy the materiel and send them to Israel rather than giving Israel the money to turn around and buy the materiel.

Is it a tax benefit to the merchants of death?  Is it a federal budget thing? Is it more easily scammed?  Are there middle-men who need to get paid off? Does the Israeli lobby benefit?  It is a poser.
