WEF Report
World Economic Forum

The World Economic Forum has demoted the United States in its ranking of economic competitiveness, explaining that spiraling debt and persistent budget shortfalls forced the downgrade.  Switzerland now holds the top spot, followed by much of Scandinavia.

BBC:

Although the US remained the global engine of technology, WEF said its business environment was being endangered by the fragile state of its public finances.

The US has seen its budget and trade deficits spiral in the past few years as a result of heavy government spending and rising trade imbalances with countries such as China and Japan.

The US trade deficit is expected to top last year’s record level of $717bn (378bn; 565bn euros) in 2006, while the budget shortfall, although expected to be significantly lower than last year, is still forecast to be close to $300bn.

What did the U.S. expect when most American companies outsource like there is no tomorrow?! People like CNN’s Lou Dobbs aren’t wrong when they state outsourcing, in the long run, isn’t good for the American people, particularly the middle class. Both Clinton’s and Bush’s talks about supposed “free trade” are just a codename for shipping American jobs overseas and not doing anything to reduce the ever growing deficit. Add to the mix the fact that most American products are junk or don’t last very long. I don’t always agree with him but Bill Maher was right when he stated that if a person wants to live the American Dream then move to Europe.

Both clinton and bush as well as the congress had approved the global trade bills.  They are responsible for the massive shift of manufacturing from US to overseas. This shift enriches the corporate america at the expense of domestic labor force and part of the trade deficits. This imbalance with china and other cost nations can be corrected if we stop this global trade. Trade imbalance with japan is entirely another story. Japanese autos and others are slaughtering US makers. This imbalance can not be corrected if US manufacturers continue to produce their subpar products. If this is to continue, then US will lose substantial part of its manufacturing base.

I attributed the federal deficits to the reckless and chronic deficits spending without regard to the national financial health. Who owuld have thought that the once mighty dollar had fallen about 40% vis-a-vis the Euro in the last 5 years.

No country and no household are able to kept borrowing and spending endlessly. Those elected officials are solely responsible for the demise of this nation from the richest after ww2 to the largest debtor on earth.

americans are losers—now they’re coming down hard on the russians for not toeing the american line on iran

but in retaliating, russia will turn away american energy companies who want to take part in russia’s booming economy

it’s wonderful when the ideology of stupidity confronts the reality of intelligence—in america, stupidity always wins

small wonder that nearly 90% of americans backed bush in sending our girls & boys off to die or be maimed in iraq

americans only have themselves to blame as they hock their houses in order to keep up with the joneses, & as they watch from the safety of their dens as other folks’ kids do the dirty work in bush’s deluded war on terror
