George Allen and macaca
From CNN

A screenshot from the infamous “macaca” video, in which Sen. George Allen used a racial epithet to describe a rival campaign worker of Indian descent. Allen also at one time wore buttons emblazoned with the Confederate flag, and Salon is now reporting that the Virginia senator used the N-word repeatedly while in college.

Three former college football teammates of Sen. George Allen say the Virginia Republican repeatedly used the racial epithet to describe blacks back in the 1970s. And one of those ex-teammates is even putting his name on the record. (Salon ad req’d)

  • UPDATE: Other accusers come forward

  • Salon:

Three former college football teammates of Sen. George Allen say that the Virginia Republican repeatedly used an inflammatory racial epithet and demonstrated racist attitudes toward blacks during the early 1970s.

“Allen said he came to Virginia because he wanted to play football in a place where ‘blacks knew their place,’ ” said Dr. Ken Shelton, a white radiologist in North Carolina who played tight end for the University of Virginia football team when Allen was quarterback. “He used the N-word on a regular basis back then.”

A second white teammate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared retribution from the Allen campaign, separately claimed that Allen used the word “nigger” to describe blacks. “It was so common with George when he was among his white friends. This is the terminology he used,” the teammate said.

Allen’s mother was raised in Tunisia. Macaca is a derogatory term there.

to colonel #25463; neither had i heard the term “macaca” used in the george allen context until i saw the clip of him using it twice. i recognized it immediately as an attempted insult because of context and because of the “macaque”, as in monkey. as for which european culture? likely the french as colonizers of northern africa where i am told allen’s grandfather and mother lived as french speakers.
i don’t care what salon magazine says, or where his mother lived or if he has a mother; there was, there is nothing vague, ambiguous, cryptic or equivocal about what george allen said or the context in which he said it, on camera, two times. it damn sure wasn’t mohawk. worse than what he said is that he would feel the need to lie about it. he said macaca, he said it twice.

Virginia has a 20 percent African-American population; and Larry Sabato just went on “Hardball” and confirmed that Allen used the N-word.

Allen has insulted African-Americans, Latinos, Indian-Americans, Jews, bubbas, his core group of supports is shrinking fast!

This Salon article appears to be another fabrication.

“Macaca” is obviously a new word for the great majority of us. It is said that certain European cultures use it as a racial epithet. Which European cultures? And where, in Allen’s culture, would he have picked it up? It is certainly not a common racist term in Virginia. Did his family use the term? Puzzling.

thank goodness i am seated when reading of these shocking allegations. who knew george allen might be a bigot, an aspiring cracker, a caricature of foghorn leghorn? are these witnesses certain allen didn’t say “mohawk”, the mword? the two words are phonetically very similar, almost identical; nword/mword/nword/mword. are these witnesses now motivated to cast aspersions because allen’s mother is of an ancient and noble lineage? why are so many people picking on george allen? is it because he seems to be a loathsome bigot, an insufferable fraud, an inept if practiced liar? hey, george; neener neener, yer ma’s a mohawk.

Racial epithets still resonate among many white voters in virginia. I wont be surprised if Allen is re-elected by these voters.
