The next season of “Survivor” will have a new twist that has already drawn criticism.  Four teams are to be divided along racial/ethnic lines—blacks, whites, Asians, and Latinos. The individual who wins gets a million-dollar prize.

Fernando Mateo, founder of Hispanics Across America, had this to say about the format: “The participants will be held to the daunting and unfair challenge of representing an entire race of people…. What will it mean for a team—a race—to fail in a battle of wits and strength against another race?”

BBC News:

The network announced on Wednesday that the 20 “castaways” would be initially segregated into groups of blacks, whites, Asians and Latinos before merging later in the series.

It said the move was aimed at addressing complaints that there had not been sufficient ethnic diversity in previous series.

But New York councillor John Liu told the Associated Press: “The idea of having a battle of the races is preposterous.

“How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?”

Well, if the results end up corresponding with average IQ, the results will be:

1st place: Asians
2nd place: White
3rd place: Hispanic
4th place: Black

So how do you decide which team a person belongs to? What they look like? The languages they speak, or don’t? Their names? Blood tests? Do they self-identify or does someone else do that for them?

This is pretty sick, even for the ratings-hungry “Survivor” crew. Just what’s needed right now - more divisions.

this pathetic ” show ” is a textbook example of the network ” haves ” exercising classic marx ” false conciousness ” upon its victims, the audience.
first off, the show is pure union busting-no writers, e.g. no working class intellectual input, ie their ” could never be ” such input from the working class.
second, the show is a calculated debasement of the ” common man, ” a soft black mass orgy refutation of the right to basic dignity.
my dad worked for Danny Thomas when Thomas produced some of the most well written shows of the 60’s. that was the high point of civilization. this shit is the photo-negative of all of that, in fact the rape of that plateau.

I think all the righteous indignation over this is just silly.  Survivor has always been an interesting study of human interaction, and this is just another true to life twist that will spark a lot of interesting debate and discussion.

It’s really easy (and intellectually lazy in my opinion) to just simply react to this and cry foul.  What’s harder is to acknowledge that the situation that Survivor is setting up is one that plays out every day in the real world, and allow it to raise thoughtful discussion.

I for one will be very fascinated to see how the show goes and how the contestants handle it.

And remember - the tribes in Survivor always merge after several episodes.  They’ll only be divided by race for a small portion of the show.

I think this is a very positive step toward a great opportunity for liberals.  Really, I do, and here’s why…

The recent Zogby survey showed how woefully ignorant most Americans are about, well, just about anything “real.”  More knew the first names of the Three Stooges than they did the three branches of our government.  77 percent could name two of the Seven Dwarfs, but only 24 percent could name two USSC justices.  It got worse from there.

So is there any surprise that a vast majority of Americans have no idea how they are being f**ked over by Republican Wealth Crusaders and how a thin majority keep voting for them anyway?  They don’t get past the headlines of the newspapers, if they even bother with the first section, as they fill their tiny heads with pop culture confection.

This means that if liberals want to get their message out to the millions of poor and middle class voters who put Republicans into office even though Republicans screw them in innumerable ways once elected, liberals have to use a channel that the voters tune to.  Not newspapers.  Not radio.  Not PBS.  Nope.  The only channel being used are the TV networks which produce “Survivor,” “American Idol” and TV crap like it.

After we get past the racial season, we need to send up a “Survivor” series that pits Democrats against Republicans.  Republicans will be depicted as blood-thirsty, canabalistic, baby-eating heathens who raid the Democrats’ crops, slaughter their children, burn their churches, empty their purses and wallets, and force them to commit “unnatural” sex acts among themselves and animals.  Democrats will be depicted as God-fearing folk who do their best to protect their children, but are unarmed and powerless against the hordes of Republicans.

At the end of the season the Democrats will be wiped out in one last savage attack, and the leader of the Republican tribe will finally unmask himself and reveal…Osama bin Laden, of course.

Fiction?  Of course.  Ludicrous?  Naturally. Impossibly ineffective?  NFW.  Dumb Americans will soak it up like a sponge found on the desert floor.

Your headline says where your head is.  I don’t condone CBS’ idea, but does the fact that more ethnic people are being shown make it o.k. to now call the show “ghetto”.  What’s your point?

I’m disappointed in Truthdig.  You should be ashamed!

The show is desperate for ratings.  It’s based on a flawed definition of race/ethinicity.

Latinos are not a race nor an ethinicity, any more than whites.  The most common federal definition has to do with the ‘original people of Europe ‘.  Where do you think Spaniards come from.

That’s just crazy!
How can someone even entertain the notion that racially segregated teams would promote ethnic diversity?

This junk is no better than “professional” wrestling—trading on stereotypes to heat up the ringside slobberers…come to think of it, it’s just like the Republican party’s trading on the same irrational fears. Consequently, it’s no surprise to hear Limbaugh trading on the same notions, describing the Asian team as “brainiacs” and using some half-assed analysis to determine that blacks would be inferior in swimming events.  The only race here is the race to the bottom sponsored by corporate media.

Has anyone who’s complaining seen previews for the show? Thought not. Mark Burnett keeps close tabs over how the show unwinds.

Perhaps the first challenge or two are in the 4 tribes- but I would bet there would be tribe mergers shortly after—- the interesting part is then seeing how people mesh together & overcome differences and what strengths become valued.

I have watched every season of Survivor. I think this scenario is far more fair than one or two token “ethnic” folks that were chosen in a sea of white from the prior seasons.
