Amnesty International

Amnesty International has referred to some of Israel’s actions in Lebanon as “war crimes that give rise to individual criminal responsibility.”  A report by the human rights organization condemned the deliberate bombing of civilian infrastructure and the loss of civilian life, noting: “Entire families were killed in air strikes on their homes or in their vehicles while fleeing the aerial assaults on their villages. Scores lay buried beneath the rubble of their houses for weeks, as the Red Cross and other rescue workers were prevented from accessing the areas by continuing Israeli strikes.”

New York Times:

Citing a variety of sources, the Amnesty International report said Israel?s air force had carried out more than 7,000 air attacks, while the navy had fired 2,500 shells. The human toll, according to Lebanese government statistics, was estimated at 1,183 deaths, mostly civilians, about a third of them children; 4,054 wounded; and 970,000 people displaced, out of a population of a little under four million.

?Statements from the Israeli military officials seem to confirm that the destruction of the infrastructure was indeed a goal of the military campaign,? the report said. It said that ?in village after village the pattern was similar: the streets, especially main streets, were scarred with artillery craters along their length. In some cases, cluster bomb impacts were identified.?

?Houses were singled out for precision-guided missile attacks and were destroyed, totally or partially, as a result,? the report said. ?Business premises such as supermarkets or food stores and auto service stations and petrol stations were targeted.

War criminals.. just a bunch of war criminals—who would have ever thought this would describe the state of Israel?

Truly a God that failed.

Perhaps it’s not too soon to consider what President Bush’s and Prime Minister Olmert’s individual punishments should be, once they are tried and convicted at the International Court of Criminal Justice for the war crimes that Amnesty International is accusing them of having committed. For sure plenty of possibilities immediately come to mind but how’s about this one - Staging a reality show for the purpose of seeing to it that, for each of these soon to be convicted war criminals, the punishment actually fits the crime. The reality show participants would be randomly selected from throughout the world, guaranteeing and audience of billions. Each participant would present her punishment proposal, with a worldwide TV/radio/Internet audience choosing the winner. A neat feature would be that all advertising revenue (undoubtedly billions of dollars)would go for rebuilding Lebanon’s infrastructure.

Throughout the whole month that Israel attacked Lebanon, I kept watching and reading the news not to find out what was happening, but to try to figure out WHY it was happening.

After all, it made very little sense.  The whole premise is strange: Israel deliberately attacks lebanese civilians and infrastructure in order to compel the Lebanese government to attack Hezbollah, Israels real target.  Who came up with that bright strategy?  The idea that visiting violence on your neighbour will convince him to willingly join your cause against a third party is ludicrous.  Experience suggests the only thing they will gain from such an attack is to strengthen Hezbollah´s standing amongst the Lebanese (after all, they were the only ones that fought back and are paying money to all those who lost homes in the invasion….PR doesn´t get any better).  From an Israeli stand point, such an attack makes no strategic sense.  Why inflame a Muslim population in a region that is already boiling over with rage and resentment?  Did Israel really think they could destroy Hezbollah this way?

And then I read that a Peace Keeping force will be dispatched to southern Lebanon and I said ¨AHA!¨ fianlly something that makes sense.

So here´s my working hipothesis of why this happened: Israel attacked lebanese civilians indiscriminantly because it was hoping to create precisely the situation that would compel the rest of the world to intervene.  Israel´s mayor objective in all this was to use the Peace Keeping force as a physical buffer between itself and Hezbollah (a barrier of flesh and blood instead of concrete as in the West bank). By placing the rest of the world in that no man´s land between them and their enemies, they basically forced the rest of the world to become co conspirators in Israel´s status quo strategy of suppresion, denigration and appartheid of the palestinians. Now the palestinians have barriers surrounding them everywhere the look and the UN is fighting an enemy Israel created and is strengthening every day with their policies.

And how did little Israel manage such a large coup?  Obviously with the full throated approval of the world´s superpower.  With US support, Israel will shrug off the allegations of war crimes and misconduct, and continue on it´s course safe in the knowledge that they are, for all intents and purposes, untouchable by the rest of the world.  This is the real tragedy.

Which leads me into another possibility: The White House has practically discarded the possibility that US Forces will attack Iran and it´s alledged nuclear infrastructure, but the idea has been floating around that Israel might do it.  Maybe this is the payment Israel demanded from the US for acting as a possible proxy aggressor if the US decides to attack Iran.  After all, nothing is free in this world.

This is all just a hipothesis and I welcome all the comments, observations and criticisms etc. that come to mind.

We have all witnessed the US and Israel commit these blatant violations right before our eyes. The bullies stand there and smirk, ” What are you gonna do about it ? “
Let’s answer that question with the imprisonment and asset forfeiture of ALL involved. Then our thoughts will make sense and the age of cowardly masochism will be over.
( and we can once again board a plane w/o being publicly raped )

All these crimes are still supported by our government. As a matter of fact we hurriedly shipped more cluster bombs to IDF ( I love that word: it stands for Isreali Defense Force) This force has never defended anything but only invaded

An Israeli official made an alarming statement recently to the effect that Israel had done the Lebanese people a favor when it reduced their country to rubble and killed hundreds of their citizens because Israel had taken the first step toward crippling Hezbollah and now the Lebanese people could finish the job and drive Hezbollah out of Lebanon.

Sounds like, The Iraqi people will greet Americans with kisses and flowers and parades right after the Americans bomb the hell out of their country and kill thousands of their friends and relatives.

You either have to be without commom sense, any kind of heart and humanity, or a support Israel no matter what person, to not condemn Israeli war crimes.
This is crazy.
Not all jews support the misery Israel keeps on doing. The whole problem would be solved if Israel quit the occupation of the Palestinians.
  That’s really it.
How would any American like it if they lived under
Do Americans ever put themselves in someone else
s shoes?

americans & israelis are losers—they just don’t know it yet

that’s why americans bow down to bush whenever he hollers ‘terr’sts’

that’s why israelis believe their dogma justifies treating palestinians like dogs

funny thing is, israel will abandon america as soon as it can find another bully willing to give it better financing & military backing

By any definition, Israel is a lawless terrorist nation whic must be confronted by the international commuity despite protection accorded to this terrorist state by the U.S.  Are jewish lives more important than lives of palestinians who have suffered immensely and are continuing to suffer under Israel’s brutal occupation? The international community should provide military and economic support to those fighting Israel occupation of land.  If Israel continues to have this capability of destroying other countries and killing civilians indiscrimantly, the blood of these people is on the hands of entire international community.

Amnesty has done a great deal of fine work in the past, and hopefully will again. But this is just insane. Once again we get an extreme-left, even lunatic position taken by a supposedly responsible, progressive entity.
How many of the “targeted” houses, and places of business were being used by the murdering hezbollah terrorists as bases or cover? How many missiles were fired at downtown Haifa from those sites? Civilized people who defend themselves against terrorist cowards who first attacked them are “war criminals”??
How about proposing “special medals of freedom” for hezbollah? While we’re at it-we can get Bin Laden to come in now. Instead of arrest and execution, we can have a ticker tape parade for him along Broadway. He can wave to the crowd from the Amnesty International float, as it goes by the old world trade center site, now named Al Quaeda Park.
