JonBenet Confession May Be Bunk

JonBenet Ramsey
cbc.ca

UPDATE: Authorities are questioning the veracity of the supposed confession described below.

John Mark Karr, a 41-year-old schoolteacher, has admitted to kidnapping and killing JonBenet Ramsey.  The surprise confession comes after 10 years of dead-ends and false accusations in a mystery that gripped the American imagination—and airwaves.

Authorities arrested Karr in Bangkok on Wednesday, later saying he referred to the killing as an “accident.”  The Ramsey familyÂ’s attorney chastised the media and law enforcement officials from the original investigation for casting suspicion on the family: “John and Patsy lived their lives knowing they were innocent, trying to raise a son despite the furor around them.”

UPDATE: Thai authorities said Karr told them he drugged and had sex with the child, and then realized he had “accidentally” killed her.

MSNBC:

Investigators at one point said JonBenet’s parents were under an “umbrella of suspicion” in the slaying. And some news accounts cast suspicion on JonBenet’s older brother. But the Ramseys insisted an intruder killed their daughter, and no one was ever charged.

In the months after the slaying, Patsy Ramsey went before the cameras, vigorously defending herself and her husband, chastising the media and blasting local law enforcement as incompetent.

What would you do in my situation? The situation is that I may have met this Karr fellow four years ago. I was an English teacher in Paris four years ago, and I used to go to a book shop called Shakespeare and Co. every Sunday, the place where I met my wife and some other expats. Anyway, one day in the autumn of 2002, I was there and overheard this guy with a southern accent talking about how he had broken a teaching contract after a few weeks in South Korea. I had taught once in South Korea and wanted to hear what he thought. So, we got to talking and I learned that his name was John, that he was from Atlanta, Georgia, that he would have been born in 1964 (he said that he was 38 in 2002), he wore glasses, had thinning hair, was short, told me that he was now doing some carpentry for the owner as a way of being allowed to sleep in the book shop’s loft and that he had worked as an au pair in the Netherlands (very, very rare to find male au pairs). So, we talked mainly about teaching jobs overseas and he seemed like an amiable type, but rather childlike and also down and out (living in a dirty attic in a book shop at age 38, no money, far from home), I gave him my email address and told him that if he wanted any info on teaching overseas to contact me and then he gave me his email address where I saw that he spelled his name as John Carr. The only differences between Mr. Carr and Mr. Karr are that Mr. Carr was not as thin as Mr. Karr (although anyone can lose weight in 4 years) and that he spelled his name with a “C” rather than a “K.” Other than that, everything is the same. I didn’t see him for a while, and several weeks later while visiting the shop, I saw him in one of the corners of the book shop reading and eating lunch. I asked him how he was and he told me that he had gone to Istanbul for a job offer teaching, but that it didn’t work out and he came back to Paris and was now living on his savings. Mr. Karr’s CV mentions that he had spent time in Istanbul.
Very creepy. Glad I never saw or heard from him again after that. Anyway, I telephoned the Boulder DA and left a message that could possibly help establish a timeline for him since his departure from the U.S. in 2001 and I also gave details to a newspaper in Colorado. I just feel ill-at-ease as it’s not everyday that I come face to face with someone this insane. Even if he isn’t the murderer, there’s plenty of other stuff out there which would make you not want to touch this guy with a ten-foot pole, i.e., child pornography, coercing teenage girls into marrying him, etc. Real piece of work.

Meanwhile, children die by the dozens weekly in Iraq, whose names and faces we will never see on the American main stream media (although their images are seen on television in much of the rest of the world). Why? Because it’s bad P.R. for the Iraq war effort. (And, of course, those kids are simply “collateral damage” anyway).

Meanwhile, it was “All JonBennet All The Time” Thursday on CNN. Probably today, too (although I really can’t watch anymore of this obvious take-over of the media by National Enquirer journalism).

This ongoing media hype about “saving the children”, using tittilating garbage like this, their endless panic-mongering over the supposed “horrors” of the Internet to children, the “billion dollar a year” child porn “industry”, “predatory” stakeouts, etc. When there are REAL children, who are dying left and right, in an illegal war in Iraq, they don’t even exist to the American MSM. An actual mightmare is going on, in relation to children, but our MSM won’t even touch it with a ten foot pole. They won’t dare question their government sources/corporate funding.

So young people can die, often horribly, or be maimed, blinded, crippled for life, on a daily basis in Iraq…but the MSM will trip all over each other over JonBennet, along with all of their “cautionary tales” and “warnings”, because, after all, they are out to “save the children.”

Two days ago, all the “breaking news” was about how they finally got the guy who killed Jon Benet. Now today, the “breaking news” is all about debunking all their wild speculations from two days ago.

We really are somewhat too media saturated on some things- but then get no news at all on huge issues. The problem is lack of balance at any of the big news corporations.

It will be interesting to learn how, if he was present when Jon Benet died, he is claiming it was accidental.  She was strangled and sexually violated, if the news reports are to be believed.

Although this arrest is promising - it presents an opportunity for a commentary on the American judicial process but moreso on the American media.  I’m only 40 years old but back in the day when I got a journalism degree I was taught about media or journalists being fair and objective. These days it is all about hype and ratings.  There seems to be no room for equal time or fair comment of objectivity.

Now I’m a lawyer and I respect the justice system and the role of due process.  Nobody in government seems to care about that anymore.  I often represent clients who are doctors etc. who before they were arrested wanted to “book” the bad guys and send them to prison without hearing or whatever or talk to people who just want to lock people up.  But after they are charged they are concerned about “fair play” and “justice” and all these things that they never cared about before it was them that were faced with losing their liberty.

I hope to God that this Karr person IS the killer because I find it HORRIFIC what the Ramsey’s had to deal with - losing their beloved daughter in a way that could have only been more painful than I can imagine. And if peace can be found in justice then John and Pasty deserve it.  Only wish Patsy was still here to know the news.

But this highly publicized and ridiculous “perp walk” that is being played over and over of this guy is kind of outrageous. Um…. doesn’t he deserve a lawyer present?  I’m not supporting him .. I hope he IS the killer and he get’s what he deserves so that the family can have justice.  But who was there to care about John and Patsy’s rights when they were falsely under suspicion?  NO ONE.  The public wanted to hang them and it appears they were innocent.

Let’s let the EVIDENCE speak and hope that justice is done. And can we try to get back to a system of due process and letting things playout a little?

I"m so frightened every day to be a citizen of this country and see how our process and freedoms are just being eroded every day.  When this country started there were protections for citizens and fair processes.  They weren’t imperfect but yet, they were the envy of the world and now no one cares.

For JonBenet and all victims, and all accused, let’s let the process happen.  It was designed by our forefathers for a reason.

Why are you referring to this guy as a SCHOOLTEACHER????  He was a substitute teacher for SEVEN DAYS!!  The LA Times did the same thing on their front page; only deeper into the paper did I find out he’d been a substitute teacher only 7 days.  Come on!  The guy is FORTY ONE!  He must have had some other jobs too!  Why is everyone so eager to make it seem like any teacher can be a murderer?  We get a bad enough rap from the press as it is.

We all hope that we have finally solved this case but one should never jump to conclusions.
Maybe we can still hope for a logical end to the OJ Simpson case after more than 10 years.

Mental illness never ceases to amaze me. And to think that the world is filled with mentally ill people, going about doing unspeakable things, every day and everywhere, in all its shades and degrees. It starts at the very top… and ends with the likes of this man, John Mark Karr, who is so obsessed with beauty that he would actually consider kidnapping/raping or what have you, a six year old child. No words can describe my sadness.

JonBenet’s confessed killer says she overdosed on chloroform (according to dpa news story):

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=112279

Chloroform would not necessarily show up in a tox screen, because of it’s chemical nature (see this ATSDR/CDC webs site:):

http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/phs6.html

See these sections:

1.4 Inside your body, chloroform is carried by the blood to all parts of your body, such as the fat, liver, and kidneys.  Chloroform usually collects in body fat; however, its volatility ensures that it will eventually be removed once the exposure has been removed.  Some of the chloroform that enters your body leaves unchanged in the air that you breathe out, and some chloroform in your body is broken down into other chemicals.

1.6 The measurement of chloroform in body fluids and tissues may help to determine if you have come into contact with large amounts of chloroform.  However, these tests are useful only a short time after you are exposed to chloroform because it leaves the body quickly.  Because it is a breakdown product of other chemicals (chlorinated hydrocarbons), chloroform in your body might also indicate that you have come into contact with those other chemicals.  Therefore, small amounts of chloroform in the body may indicate exposure to these other chemicals and may not indicate low chloroform levels in the environment.  From blood tests to determine the amount of liver enzymes, we can tell whether the liver has been damaged, but we cannot tell whether the liver damage was caused by chloroform.

The guy’s ex-wife says that he was very, very interested in the newspaper coverage at the time of the girl’s murder. He may sound so convincing because he has absorbed the story and it’s become part of his twisted little brain. She also says that she was with him at the time of the murder, so it’s very unlikely he did it.

Apparently there’s some DNA evidence somewhere, from the girl’s fingernails and underwear, so they should be able to prove this one way or the other pretty soon, unless they’ve lost the evidence.

He was arrested in Thailand, supposedly while he was looking for work as a teacher. His visa was denied by the Thai authorities. The fact that he was living in an area of Bangkok that caters to sex tourists and child prostitution, the main reason why single men go there, may give another glimpse into his very sick mind.

He’s probably another dangerous but inadequate looney looking for his fifteen minutes (or more) of fame. They may have to lock him up and throw away the key. I doubt this guy can be fixed.

Be very very careful here. Perhaps this new suspect was ALSO involved, but listen to how he phrases his “confession”.  The reasons the parents were suspected are outlined in 2 books written by detectives who were there and actually SAW the evidence, such as the ransom note with insider information, the body laid out by a loving parent, the failure of the parents to search the house, and the mother wearing the same party clothes she wore the night before.

I want to hear or read information that the suspect was actually in Boulder at the time of the crime. I am disturbed by the fact that family members and ex-spouse have him in Alabama/Atlanta at the time of the crime. This could be a obsessed wacko looking to embarass the media that wrongly accused the Ramsey family.

There will be not one iota of embarassment in the slimey media outlets who, as recently as last week, were still pimping the child’s death. Although the investigation lasted ten years, suspicion and half-baked theories devastated and, for all practical purposes, convicted the family.  This will all be forgotten as the new story of the Bangkok Pedophile takes over.
