Are Bush & Co. Seeking Democracy Alternatives in Iraq?

Posted on Aug 17, 2006

ThinkProgress drew our attention to this nugget buried at the end of a N.Y. Times article yesterday: Bush administration officials are “beginning to plan for the possibility that Iraq’s democratically elected government might not survive.”

Reporters bury this kind of news only if it’s not very well sourced. So we’re staying conservative on this one.

ThinkProgress:

“In light of the recent violence in the Middle East,” President Bush said recently, “some are questioning whether democracy can take root in the region. I believe that the Iraqi people are showing us their answer.”

But privately, White House officials are wondering if the “free and democratic Iraq” Bush envisions is still possible amid continued sectarian violence. The New York Times reports today that officials are now “considering alternatives other than democracy” for Iraq:

How can Bush stop from pushing democracy and still hope to go to war with Iran ? He would be without his nation/democracy building excuse. According to a story released today Cheney is working hard to makeup and plant enough lies about uranium and Iran to beat the drums of war like a tomtom.

what our news media have in common with the administration & congress is that they all are so naive, arrogant or dumb as to think our glorious republic has any say in how iraq will end up—that clown joe biden, for instance, wants to balkanize iraq, as if it was our decision

One has to wonder if Iraq’s “democratically elected government” is anything like ours, that is a government not of the people (except the people who have their asses parked inside the beltway or on K Street), not by the people (unless the Supreme Court constitutes the people), and certainly not for the people (unless you’re part of that magic 1% that holds 95% of the country’s wealth).  Odds are, that exactly describes Iraq’s “democratically elected government” which might be one reason the Iraqi citizens are having none of it.

Or reporters appear to bury this kind of item if it puts them at the back of the line for access ...

Well, why not? After all, they’ve been “considering alternatives other than democracy” here at home for quite a while now!!!! The majority of Americans are in disagreement with this Administration’s policies - foriegn and domestic - and it’s been shown over and over that lying, stealing and covering up are the order of the day for the White House crew.  See any of these guys listening to the voice of the American People? Russ Feingold was laughed at and called unpatriotic when he called for Censure of the Presidentfor his illegal actions—Surely, it’s important to find out the truth about actions that maim and kill by the Hundreds of thousands, bankrupts our nation, Flagrant voting manipulations, etc. - surely, if it was vitally important to the Republican Party to launch a $40 Million “investigation” into the Blue Dress Mess with Clinton - then it must be at least as important to have an open Congressional investigation into the actual,real,Honest-To-God lawbreaking by our President. Think that will happen any time soon? If so, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale - cheap!!!
