The U.S. soldier who exposed the atrocities at the notorious Iraq prison camp is speaking out for the first time about his experiences. His claims are unexpected: “Nobody in command knew about the abuse, because nobody in command cared enough to find out.”

Joe Darby at GQ:

Everybody thinks there was a conspiracy at Abu Ghraib.

Everybody thinks there was an order from high up, or that somebody in command must have known. Everybody is wrong. Nobody in command knew about the abuse, because nobody in command cared enough to find out. That was the real problem. The entire command structure was oblivious, living in their own little worlds. So it wasn?t a conspiracy?it was negligence, plain and simple. They were all fucking clueless.

I for one support Joe Darby and think he is incredibly brave to speak out about what was really going on. Whatever the motivation, abuse is WRONG, be it by Iraqis or by Americans. If you want to offer some lines of support for Joe, check out

The sophisticated techiques used to torture the prisons must have been an epiphany. These guards were not the brightest and best America had to offer. Similar techiques were used in Guatemala and Viet Nam but with more death resulting.
