Pakistan Called ‘Hub’ of Airline Terror Plot

U.S. and European officials have traced major support for the recently foiled aircraft terror plot to Pakistan, though they praised the Pakistani government for its “vital” role in unraveling the scheme.  Investigators said the operation drew financial and logistical support from Karachi and Lahore, and at least 17 of those in British custody are said to have ties to Pakistan.  According to an intelligence source, “The Pakistan connection is the big focus now…. Everything is coming out of there.”

Washington Post:

U.S. intelligence analysts say they believe that the principal remaining leadership of al-Qaeda is hiding in Pakistan. Despite increased cooperation between the Islamabad government and Western powers since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, they say, the number of extremists inside the country may be on the rise and elements of Pakistan’s intelligence services remain sympathetic to their cause.

On Friday, the British government portrayed Pakistan’s cooperation as vital in undoing the alleged bombing conspiracy, but some U.S. officials said that five years after the Sept. 11 attacks, they are far from countering, or even understanding, the level of threat emanating from Pakistan’s lawless regions and bustling cities.

To Nancye in #18050…

“Why is the Arab viewpoint never reported?”

Oh but it HAS been reported. It is burned into the brains of every Muslim… KILL THE INFIDELS (and anyone who isn’t Muslim is an infidel by definition).

Sure… there are degrees of subtlety in applying this DIRECTIVE in the Islam faith… many “luke-warm” Muslims play the game… yelling and screaming at the West when being watched by their peers, then scurrying behind the scenes to make a deal with the infidels when there’s a profit to be made.

So I ask you, Nancye, if YOUR next door neighbor openly declares it is their intention to “kill” you when the time is right, what are you going to do… WAIT FOR IT?

I might be badly misinformed, but with what I think I know about Islam, it’s my view that most of the hostility and animosity toward Muslims would disappear if they would just revise their creed to some form of LIVE AND LET LIVE. (But then, what would they do with all those centuries of hatred for infidels they’ve built up?)

Does our intelligence community REALLY believe that al-Quaeda is an “organization” with “leadership;” or are their resigned to the sad truth that this is the only language the WASHINGTON POST can understand (or at least is willing to print)?  It is as if the very idea that a highly-distributed loosely-coupled network of individuals who share little more than an ideology can pull off (or almost pull off) highly-coordinated acts of terror is so alien to our cultural world-view that all we can do is deny it.  The irony is that our is the culture that has engendered all of those technology gurus who love to talk about how the Internet has enabled “virtual” universities and corporations (not to mention manufacturing processes), all of which operate on those same principles of a highly-distributed loosely-coupled network!  The problem is that, as Einstein pointed out about atomic energy, the same technology that can advance the course of a civilization can also destroy it.  As one of the pioneers of the Internet, I can remember, twenty years ago, how nice things would be if online communities could transcend the limitations of Usenet technology.  Well, I seem to have gotten my wish; and I can only blame my own techno-centric tunnel vision for not anticipating that online communities would enable terrorism (and, for that matter, a whole new generation of dirty political campaigning) when all I wanted was a forum for the academic papers I was writing!

Thank you for the mainstream media report. I can’t imagine why anyone would believe it without a huge dose of salt. What better than a major terrorist plot while the Republicans are under stress?
Everybody who doesn’t read the news intensively still believes Bush is strong on terrorism.
Ya, maybe these guys had a plot. But how is more bombing in Iraq and Lebanon, more restrictions of civil liberties in the US, more unrestricted presidential power, going to change that?
The message is all wrong, even if it is true (which I doubt, in its entirety). There are so many other questions, such as: WHY does Al Quada continue to recruit suicide volunteers from the Arab people, not always the most radical ones?
WHY does the media totally ignore the devastation and suffering of Iraqis, Lebanese, Afganis and other Arab peoples so consistently? Why is the Arab viewpoint never reported; the huge proportion of ordinary people who curse America for killing their family members, destroying their homes?
Please try to see beyond the lying liars in the Republican one party, the international corporations, the no-bid contractors, and the media that is thoroughly bought and paid for by all of the above.
To paraphrase dear Emily Dickinson, you report it “slant.”
