Liquids on a Plane
From craphound.com

It was looking like snakes were going to be the biggest threat to planes this summer, but energy drink bottles filled with explosive liquids turned out to be the real problem.

  • Check out the TSA’s hours-old official ban on liquids on planes.
  •

  • Update #1: The terrorists were apparently “planning to smuggle hydrogen peroxide-based liquid/slurry explosives” (whatever that is) in the bottles, according to U.S. News.
  •

  • Update #2
  • Someone came up with a fitting graphic (above)

    CNN:

Terrorists planned to use MP3 players and energy drinks to blow up as many as 10 jetliners bound for the United States, authorities said Thursday.

A senior congressional source said it’s believed the plotters planned to mix a “British version of Gatorade” with a gel-like substance to make an explosive that they would possibly trigger with an MP3 player or cell phone.

British and Pakistani authorities joined forces to block the plot to bomb the airliners, officials said.

Even I can mix two common chemicals together and create noxious, poisonous fumes. One need not create a fireball explosion as seen on TV to cause havoc at 30,000 feet, one need only to cause panic.

I’m as skeptical of the government reports and the media’s lack of responsibility as anyone, but, the “plot” is actually plausible.

What we need to ask though, is whether or not these people were actually planning anything at all on a plane with intent to “crash” planes. For all we know they could have all been discussing exactly what WE are discussing.

As a chemist who spent many years doing chemical explosions and other demonstrations for students, I’m strangely unaware of a set of common liquids which might be used to bring down an aircraft.  Is there any assurance that the terrorists had access to reagents which would reliably work?  Or is this perhaps all political hype in preparation invasions to “protect” middle east oil & gas fields from terrorists?

Hydrogen peroxide? Pure 100% hydrogen peroxide probably is unobtainable. But let’s say you obtained 80% H2O2 with 20% H2O; what would that give you? Basically, it would give you nothing more than what you could get at the nearest hair stylist’s boutique.

If terrorists want to attack airliners, I am fairly sure they would use something else.

Now I will go over to WMR and get his take on this.

I agree with message # 17916 by Amicusbriefs that “this is an old plot rehashed to save Tony Blair’s skin.”

Bush’s poodle, Blair, thinks he can stage something similar to what Bush and Co. did on 9 /11,, 2001 to get a new lease on his political life.

Initial searches of the the residences of the alleged terrorists found nothing of the stuff and liquids to make bombs; this has become now public news. However, they will quickly find a way to plant something in these places to make it look as evidence.

Is there an end to the evil of these so-called Western democracies governments?!

This so-called terror event is a old plot rehashed to save Tony Blair’s skin. See it debunked by a former NSA employee at waynemadsenreport.com

The major news media are milking it hard.

I’m not sure I understand the jist of this posting.  Are you suggesting that the recent TSA directives against liquids being brought on a plane are ridiculous?

    I’m waiting for it…

Some wise apple will find a way to IGNITE THEIR CURRY-ENRICHED METHANE-GENERATING FARTS by rubbing their polyester pants on the seat cushion!

So now everyone will have to have an ENEMA and FLATULENCE TEST before boarding! Or perhaps, they’ll take the seats out and make everyone stand. Hell yes… you could get two, maybe three times the number of cattle on a flight if you elminate seating altogether! Brilliant!

    Jeez this is NUTS!
